These were used in the old Motorola 41V 2-way radios of the 1950's. It looked like the old fireworks called "snakes" that one set up on the sidewalk and lit with a match. It was inspiring to watch a bench tech leap out of the way of that red-hot black stuff. 73 de George/W0AV ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 18:49:51 -0800 (PST) From: Lloyd Lachow To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [161896] Re: Fox Spots Message-ID: <20031126024951.13039.qmail@web41002.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hoorah! It is in the Sept/Oct 2003 issue. His indirect method for determining tuner loss is shown to have a maximum error of 1.5%. In another part of the paper, he discusses errors in the 5-8% range. This assumes a properly calibrated meter, of course, which his was for his tests. Display resolution is, of course, the limiting factor for actual use, regardless of how "accurate" the actual measurement is internally. He discusses this quite thoroughly with several graphs of the effects of limited resolution on several parameters. I would think that your Vectronics is very similar to the 259B. Tough luck on the Fox Hunt tonight. I heard you several times with a good signal here. These were used in the old Motorola 41V 2-way radios of the 1950's. It looked like the old fireworks called "snakes" that one set up on the sidewalk and lit with a match. It was inspiring to watch a bench tech leap out of the way of that red-hot black stuff. 73 de George/W0AV ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 20:17:17 -0800 From: Bradford D Bilbrey To: qrp-l@Lehigh.EDU Subject: [161911] For Sale need Christmas money Message-ID: <20031125.201718.3372.0.bigdawg74@juno.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello All: Well it's that time of year again, need some extra cash to keep my wife and teenage daughter happy. I recall what I did was put the Vertronics at the input of the tuner and verify that I got a good match between the Vertonics and the tuner input. Then, with an RF Probe I measured input and output power using E*E/R since the RF Probe read peak RF voltage. I was amazed the Vectronics put the same power into the tuner when matched from 160 to 10 meters. The Fluke RF Probe was read by my O'scope. And the results looked good to me. This is the kit that Doug Hendricks eluded to approximately three weeks ago. What we have is a small portable brass dual paddle designed by me with input from members of the AZ ScQRPions. The base size is 2 inch x 2 inch and the weight is 7.5ozs. It is made almost entirely of brass. The base, lever arms, posts and stop are all brass. Like the Norcal paddle of a few years ago, the parts are cut, drilled, and tapped. Also like the Norcal paddle, you get to finish and assemble them. :-) I have built a few protypes as have a few other ScQRPions and it appears this is a 2-4 hour kit. You can see the paddle at . The paddle has many of the Norcal paddle attributes but there are also a few differences. Some of the differences are: This paddle is considerably smaller. It is made mostly of brass and the Norcal paddle was a combination of brass and steel. The arms on this paddle have a ground wire attached. Silver plated screws are used for contacts. The finger pieces are finished (guitar picks with the AZ ScQRPion logo printed on them). Each paddle is hand made by members of the AZ ScQRPions. By hand made I mean that we use electric tools and hand tools but we have not used any computer controlled machinery. We drill each hole by hand. We also hand tap all holes by hand. I can tell you that we have put a lot of labor into the first 100 kits. None of us are machinist. Each paddle kit is truly hand made. As such, it takes a considerable amount of time to produce each one. If you guys and gals like it and buy it, we will make runs of 100 paddles on a "demand" basis. Each run will take at least a couple of weeks to produce. However, doing the work ourselves is the only way we can keep the costs down. Because each kit is hand made, we thought it might be fun to track where they end up (after all, these are our babies!). So, we have serialized each base. And As we sell kits, we will record who the owner is and post the S/N list to the web. If you sell it, let us know who purchased it so we can keep tabs of the new owners. We hope we can keep up with demand. If we seem slow, well it is probably because we are! However, I can tell you it will not be intentional. We will be cutting/drilling/tapping/shipping as fast as we can! In order to produce 100 paddles we have to cut 600 pieces of brass, drill 2000 holes, tap 1300 holes, and kit 2800 parts. The price of the paddle is $25 (US dollars) shipped in the USA and $27 (US dollars) shipped to our canadian friends. Shipping is by 1st class mail. If you are interested in purchasing a kit, you can send a check or money order to: Jerry Haigwood - W5JH 6926 W Charter Oak Rd Peoria, AZ 85381 We also accept paypal. Designate azscqrpions@covad.net as the recipient. If you are ordering by mail, an addressed label would be appreciated. Paddle and parts can be seen at: As always, we thank you for your support. No great surprise here. You can buy a used TS-870 for like $1300.00 and it will run rings around your K-2 in every way. A friend has one and I played with it. Last week's band conditions just not good enough. Got them both last night. And thanks go to the two Foxs that had to work to pull my antenna challenged 5W out of the pack. They both made the effort to try several times to get my call. I'm using a 20M GP, matching it with my new IC-703 internal tuner.
