Here in NWVT conditions were up and down; some QTHs were simply not to be had. I could hear three Maryland stations over the day Sunday but they couldn't hear me for love or money. Same for DC and the infamous QRP nomansland, Delaware! I never heard an Okie even once, though, I wish I had a sawbuck for every Texan with a big 10 meter amplifier! Just about 27000 points (single-op, QRP, phone-only) ... 37 states, 3 provinces, 21 countries with 220 Q's. Last year I was 93K with 42/6/58. The DX multipliers really hurt. I heard stations working Europe but never heard any myself. I did bag New Zealand and Hawaii. I can honestly say I worked real hard for 97% of the Qs and the score not withstanding, I enjoyed the two days. Had a few brief but pleasant extended contacts, worked a few new areas, and I feel the rotten conditions forced me to learn no skills ... You can clear it first by selecting 'Debugger' ->Clear Memory ->Clear Registers if you choose, but the movlw D'7' sets the W register early enough in the program so that this step isn't necessary. When you say "Shouldn't it display W:0x7 until the 2nd movlw command when it should display W:0xc, followed by W:0x3.", are you talking about the indicator at the bottom of the screen? Are you pushing F6 first to reset the debugger and program pointer, then do you push F7 repeatedly to step through the program? After the first instruction (pushing F7 each time), yes, the W register should show W:0x7, and should remain W:0x7 until after the 2nd movlw when it should show W:0xc. The result of the andwf Local,w changes the W register to W:0x4. The result of the movlw D'3' of course changes the W register to W:0x3 The result of the iorwf Locl,f leaves the W register at W:0x3. I have read the article(s) more than once. Loren did not invent the antenna, but neither was it invented by hams, certainly not one from VS-land in any event. It was/is a single wire feeder and it had a *specific* location the feeder attached to the single horizontal halfwave element that was offset from center. It is named after Windom because of the popularity of the antenna after his published articles. The VS1AA antenna was a variation of the windom in that its' specific offset attachment of the feeder to the horizontal halfwave was at a different location. It came along MANY years later, as did eventually the dual feeder and coax variations of the windom, When fed with two element feedline, it shares some but not all of the characteristics of a true windom. Nonetheless it is often called a windom. Again this is from memory, which is hazy in some respects at my age, but I hope is sufficient to illuminate upon some of the incorrect information about the real inventor being the fellow with the VS call *OR* that Windom had actually invented this antenna. We're just starting with the 'F84A because it's lots easier to learn on. Here's the blurb from the Elmer 160 course FAQ page ... Why aren't we using the PIC16F628? For many applications the PIC16F628 is indeed a better part, as it costs less than the 16F84A and has much more capability -- however, it is a very complex part. We felt it was better to start people out on the simpler 16F84A. By the end of the class students will have developed the skills required to program and use the 16F628 by using the pin-for-pin compatible 16F84A. All the functions of the lesser device, including the programming method and circuitry, are applicable to the 16F628, so sudents can later substitue the more capable and modern microcontroller for future custom applications, if desired. After not passing the General 13 WPM in the year my Novice was good, I went to 6 Meters with the rest of the local teen hams in the Syracuse area. I had a borrowed Saturn 6 halo for the first antenna followed by a 5 element yagi from HyPar (I think). Later I put up stacked Cush Craft Squalos for the ARES net and monitoring (and a 7-element long boom yagi, 32 feet long and up 40 feet). 41 states with a 6146 final at 40 watts input (P/P 6L6's in the modulator). The antlers are long gone, but I recently modeled them with EZNEC and a Squalo-Clone would be a snap to build. However... The pattern is not omnidirectional. It's sort of elliptical with the minimum signal about 4 dB down from the "main" pattern. There is also a null in line with the opposite side from the feedpoint, ~10 dB and about 20 degrees wide. A simple dipole would be a good and inexpensive alternative. A Vee dipole, also know as a "Rabbit-Ears" Dipole is almost as omnidirectional as the Squalo and a simple one can be built with one section of EMT (conduit) and some PVC pipe. So what else is there to tell us if 10 meters is open? There is the Northern California DX Society Beacons. To check out 10 meters you listen to cw on 28.200 MHz anytime of the day or night and listen for 4U1UN at NY or VE8AT in Eastern Canada, or W6WX in Northern California. Also a simple beacon is on 28.205 N3NIA/B located in PA. Alas, this time in the solar cycle, a lot of short openings happen that will not be predicted by the beacons. So we need I think to choose a frequency that we will monitor on. I say on 10 meters lets do it on SSB not CW. I like 28.490 MHz because Tec class hams can use this frequency and often do. The message I want to send is simple. Often, check the beacons I have identified and if you hear any one of them, regardless of Solar Predictions get on 28.490 and if nothing is there call CQ. If you have a beam rotate it toward the beacon you hear. After all of the discussion on 80m over the last few days, I decided that this might be a good time to give it a try. Even with the S5 noise, the signals that I heard were not too difficult to copy and only required occasional fills. With 12 Q's in about an hour of operating time, the SPC's included CT, MD, OH, OK, TN, KS, MO, NC, AL and LA. Operating conditions here was a K2 @ 5W to a 300 foot loop at about 40 feet. This was my first "real" experience on 80 as it is usually so noisy locally that it is virtually unuseable except for stations that are close. All in all, it was an interesting and fun evening. Due to impending house repairs, and wind damage to a fence that my 40M full wave stealth loop runs (or rather, used to run) along, I took the loop down last weekend. That was my one and only all-band antenna. That left me with no antennas - almost, except for a borrowed 40M DCTL that I was playing with. Oh, and the 10M contest was on this weekend! What to do? I'd made some contacts on the 40M DCTL sitting indoors next to my rig, and it seemed to work, so why not build one for 10M? I did! You have to picture this antenna: 4 ft 1 inch of 300 ohm twinlead formed into a loop. The diameter of the finished loop is about 1.3 feet, smaller than the computer screen I'm looking at. You look at it and laugh and can't help saying "You're not serious here, are you? Is this really supposed to be an antenna?" I didn't allow length for connections, so I needed a bit more length on the open stub capacitor to resonate it. Tacked on about 25 feet of 300 ohm feedline (only needed about 3 feet, but didn't want to cut the long piece) and ran it into the tuner. Where to put it? Indoors, obviously. I ended up looping it over a cardboard box sitting on top of the bookshelf next to my operating desk. That helped it keep a loop shape. So there it sits about 2 feet from me and 3 feet from my rig. I was ready for the 10M contest, although about 20 hours late! Keep in mind, of course, that this is QRP. While I think contests are fun, I'm strictly a casual contest operator, or rather I like the opportunistic QSOs that contests can provide. No aspirations here about high scores with low power and makeshift antennas. I run my old FT-101ZD at about 5 watts output, which is less power than the final's 6146 filaments take. As the rig warms up, the power sometimes drifts down to the 2 watt area if I don't catch it and crank it back up. Turning on the rig brought the sound of signals! (That's always a good sign, isn't it?) Some Texan stations S9 and better were coming in on this little loop! The rig and tuner tuned up just fine and seemed to be happy with the little antenna. Tune around - here's a loud signal, W9WI - got him on the first call! Then some Texans starting with K5NZ, and as the band died worked some local Washingtonians. I worked all the loud ones I could hear, 10 QSOs in about half an hour - not a bad rate for me. Hmm ... maybe this tiny antenna DOES work! Sunday the band was better. I ended up with 42 QSOs total (the number 42 being the answer to the universe and all...), with a total operating time of about 2 hours. The tally was 14 states and VE3. The contacts weren't an accident! The most fun was a run that lasted about 20 minutes where I made 14 contacts, starting at the low end of the band and worked every strong signal on the way up. Got most of 'em on the first call too. It was just like I had a real antenna! I even worked some guys who didn't have S9 signals. Of course, there were the usual few contacts that I had to work pretty hard for. A few weak DX stations were heard, but none worked. The band was marginal but open to TX, LA, IN, OH, and MD, with the usual "specific propagation" that 10 meters is famous for. Oh, and of course I never got a signal report less than 599! ( ;->) I've been QRPing all the years since I got back into hamming, usually with makeshift/stealth antennas, and you'd think by now I'd have learned that almost anything works. But I really didn't expect such good results with a miniature, indoor antenna. I keep being surprised by how much one can do with very little. Minimalism is just too cool. I'm not so worried anymore about moving to a smaller house next spring, where antennas may be more of a problem. 72's and thanks to the guys with good ears who heard my signals! I ran into a snag that I didn't recall seeing any postings on. When I did the BUILD ALL on Test I got a warning followed by a whole pile of assembly errors .. which didn't make a lot of sense. In fact I had more errors than lines of code! The warning was "Warning Processor superseded by command line. Verify Processor Symbol" What I had to do to correct this problem was to got to the Configure menu and Configure -> Select Device -> PIC16f84a The default seems to have been one of the PIC18xxxx series and obviously the toolset was getting conflicting messages. Note that I am using MPLAB V6.40 so those running V6.30 might not have this issue. I also realized that the machine I installed MPLAB on is only running WIN98 not WIN98SE which seems to be the baseline OS for this tool. So far, it seems to work fine, but I may re-install on another machine or upgrade to WIN98SE. I don't have many options for this band, given my small corner lot. So, I dug the PVC poles out from under the snow, screwed them back together to make a 17 foot mast, which I attached to the back corner of the building. I wound some wire in a wide sprial around the PVC pipe for good measure and attached a 1/4 wave wire on the top to force most of current to flow into the vertical section. The 1/4 wave wire runs out to some scruffy trees on the other side of the propertly line by the abandoned RR tracks. I had to use a parallel tank to feed the end, guess I sprialed enough wire on the pipe to make it look more than 1/8 wave long. (the '46 antenna book says use a series circuit if the vertical section is less than 1/8 wave and parallel if longer than 1/8 wave) Anyway, I got it all up before our latest weekend snow storm started. Now to try and make a contact with it. Problem is that I skipped a step in Lesson 3. I had actually gotten a heads up on it just after I put Lesson 3 to bed, but when I tried to simulate it on 6.30, it wasn't a problem. The problem wasn't 6.40, though, it was that when I tested it, I didn't pick a processor that was different enough. Good to hear that you are having success with Win98oe. I couldn't see much, other than the USB programmers, that should require SE. But you never can tell. 6.30 insists on seeing IE5 before it will install, in spite of the fact that the only thing it needs IE for is to display the readmes about the various programmers, and even there it doesn't appear to do anything IE specific. It has 1000 memories and can scan 14 ways and can even make a phone patch on a repeater. But the Technology is what's new to Ham Radio. The radio uses a camcorder Lithium-ion (B-9583) 3.7 volt 1000 mah battery. So the transmitter must make 1.5 watts from a supply voltage of only 3.7 volts. This takes new technology. The battery charger is in the radio, just like a cellphone. It has a whole lot of memory just like the new cellphones. It can do so many odd things like ARTS and such that it is clear there is a lot of capability to the computer used. I'm sure the computer came from cellphone technology. I can't wait for the tiny HF rig that makes like 2 watts from the 3.7 volt battery and has all the capability of this radio. I am finding this stream to to very useful to me. I can not tell you the number of times I have wondered if noise I am receiving here is unique to my QTH. One particular "noise" is a sound that sounds like high speed, "random ignition noise." In other words, the engine is running thousands of RPM and missing badly...very RF dirty sounding noise. It comes on at about an S-6 to S-9 and will last for a few seconds to several tens of minutes. Then it will disappear only to return in a few minutes or maybe not for several hours. There is no cost at run time, and W is a little more programmer friendly than 0. That's all. Once the program is assembled, the result is exactly the same. If I say W, I mean the Working register, F means File register. Easier to remember than let's see, was it 0 that meant the working register, or 1? It does cost something at assembly time, but I'm not exactly convinced that it would cost more than the alternative. In any case, the difference is in the microseconds neighborhood ... pretty hard to measure, and you only assemble it once. But I have to admit, the more I think about it, the less sure I am that 0 is faster than W.
