From the security bulletin I cited earlier (http://www.secunia.com/advisories/10395/): "The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error, which can be exploited by including the "%01" and "%00" URL encoded representations after the username and right before the "@" character in an URL." While it's a feature to allow a web page to put something custom in the status bar, absolute spoofing of the url itself doesn't appear to have been a purposeful feature. 73 de Dave NK0E ---------------------- K7JUN wrote: Well, it't not a bug or flaw, actually - it's a FEATURE. Sometimes a web designer will do it on purpose with no evil intention or outcome, but to make the link more attractive or easier to notice or use. The unscrupulous web designers might use it to "pretend" they are taking you to one place, when actually you are going somewhere dangerous and harmful. But there is no "FIX" for this. Surfing safe web sites and using good firewall and virus software is your only protection against the evil "link imposters". ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 17:02:39 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff To: qrp qrp Subject: [163219] Re: tnx AmQRP guys Message-ID: <20031217010239.97196.qmail@web20411.mail.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii --- Joe Martin wrote: > > Let me just say to the AmQRP management team of > Jim Cates, Joe Everhart, George Heron, Paul Maciel, and Doug > Hendricks > deserve my grateful thanks to each of you. The original posted URL does bring up a web page which shows the product as a type 63/37 tin-lead alloy. After receiving W2AGN's message confirming the original "lead free" designation, I prowled the Kester web site but still did not find any clues until I thought about looking up the MSDS. Eureka! There are (2) MSDS listings MSDS 285 Core (31Aug01).pdf MSDS 285 Core LF (31Aug01).pdf Something new learned today. There are (2) versions of Kester 285. One is "lead free" and the other is the original tin/lead alloy mix. AL to MO is usually an easy trip, but not tonite. It took about the same effort to catch Dave. He was really loud here. Sorta makes one wonder about this reciprocity thingee. Now Al was a whole different ball game. He was at or below ESP most of the 2 hours. I heard him get out of his hole a couple of times, only to disappear quickly. In the last 5 minutes, he came out and stayed out. At 0359 right after W5TR, I called simplex and he got my call. I got my info, sent mine and NADA - the big goose egg. Fox and hounds were completely gone. Oh well. At least it wasn't a skunk. Conditions were just plain krappee. No easy way to say it..... My best to all! Well, that went out the window, as by the time N0IT fired up on his freq. he was *not* real strong, and the slow QSB was taking him right down into the noise. Saved his spot, then went looking for Al. Heard him early, but there was a *loud* QSO in progress over top of him. He wasn't real strong either, and within 20 minutes or so had faded from the scene, never to be heard above ESP level again. OK, time to go back and pound at Dave before *he* goes away as well. He's S-nothing with the pre-amp on, but Q5 copy when the QSB isn't taking him out. Spend the next hour calling, and not getting heard. QRM popping up nearby or on top of him most of the evening. A /7 station is loud enough to about blow the cans off my head, and he's on the other side of the filter. Dave moved several times to get clear of the mess, and finally settled in a nice, quiet spot. He wasn't getting a lot of action, mostly the odd 4 or 5, and was calling CQ at intervals. Kept on hammering away. Then, wonder of wonders, he calls me! :-) Unfortunately, it looked like QSB ate my exchange, and I never did hear an ack after I sent my report. Indeed, couldn't even hear Dave for a couple minutes. He popped back up, and on the rising edge of the QSB wave. Called, got called back, and completed the exchange! :-) Woo hoo!!! :-) Paid to be persistent! :-) I don't know. Any tougher/poorer conditions, and it'd have been a total strike-out night. As it was, it was a hard fight for the pelt I got. Kudos to Dave, who's ears are likely ringing *real* good by the time he was done... :-) Spent the last 10-15 minutes trying to hear Al. I could tell somebody was on freq. about half the time, but that was about it. Heard AJ4AY and another 4 in there calling FB, but still not *real* strong. Sure hasn't been the easiest season so far. Then again, one thing you can be *sure* of in the radio game is that you *can't* count on propagation. :-) You take what the band gives you, celebrate the successes, and carp about the failures. How can you *not* love it?!?! :-) 72/73, Todd, AG0T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 21:38:27 -0800 From: "Donald Jacob" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: [163245] Fox and Truffle NOT Message-ID: <021901c3c460$06e548a0$6501a8c0@socal.rr.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit 40 was brutal in So Cal this evening. I gathered in both Foxii pelts in prompt fashion while they were both fairly strong, after nailing the Truffle (first in his log, I think). It helps to ragchew with the Truffle beforehand . . . The NE-TX Tornados were lacking a member tonight but the four of us managed little Clean Sweeps on both Foxii and we all got a Truffle, so it was a good night for us. Funny band condx - started out just great: quiet and good signals and then the noise started up and the signals started down and it just went to pot there for over an hour before coming back right at the very end, especially for Al. Please give another try to listen to my Windows Media Player stream at http://www.w8kc.com/stream.asx Although I received a great many reports from people who enjoyed listening to the audio stream, I likewise received a number of reports of errors. Many of you reported seeing a message like "file not found." It seems the stream was a bit more popular than I thought, and the server was rejecting more than 5 simultaneous connection. That has been bumped up a bit. You do need to be running Microsoft Media player compatible systems greater than version 6. If you are behind a corporate firewall, the stream may also be blocked, as is my case. Later this week I'll be receiving a shiny new Dell Server (shameless plug, I do own a lot of DELL stock). It will be configured as a Windows 2003 Media Server (SHUT UP, I own no MSFT!) and I'll experiment with that a tad. Although it's been a lucrative career field (CSCO, LNUX, RHAT, INTC, AMD), it's too much like my real world job (EDS). At least getting the Ten*Tec (privately held, dagnabit) Corsair audio out to you all makes it somewhat more entertaining. So once again, I offer for your listening pleasure today, the stimulating sounds of the 40 meter QRP calling frequency, 7.040 MHz. The receiver is a Ten*Tec Corsair with a 1.8kc crystal CW filter. I have a forty-meter dipole antenna. One leg of the antenna passes under the eves of my home. It is about 12 feet away from the bed of my two-year-old daughter and about 5-8 feet away from the bed where my wife and I sleep. My wife is pregnant. For me, the best time to operate is in the evening after my daughter and wife are sleeping. The closeness of the antenna to them makes me nervous. Usually I use an OHR 400 on 40 meters at about 4-7 watts. Occasionally I use the Kenwood TS-520 my grandfather (WB7DTW) used until his passing. It transmits 100 watts or more. (Please excuse my QRP transgressions) My guess is that the OHR 400 at 4-7 watts is not a problem. On the other hand the TS-520 at 100+ watts is probably not a good idea. Is there a reference I could use to determine the potential health effects? I want to know if I should stop transmitting all together and move the antenna, use only the OHR, or, feel free to use the TS-520. My second question is whether or not transmitting on the 80, 30, 20 or 10 meter bands through the 40 meter dipole increases or decreases the health risks. Is there a good reference for this information? Any help you can provide is appreciated. Keith here in the Depths of the Great Bergen Swamp Based on the RF Exposure limits as published by the FCC, you would have to run over the legal power limit on HF (<30 MHz) with your installation to even reach the threshold exposure. Now, I am not an RF Engineer of any sorts, but I have been in the hobby now for 38 years. I have picked up some background, both exposure and knowledge. The closest I can relate RF exposure limits to are exposure of radiation workers to whole-body ionizing radiation, this under the Federal Regulations, 10CFR18, 10CFR19, 10CFR20 and 10CFR34. Them I know as one of my past jobs was a the Radiation Safety Office for Buffalo X-Ray in Rochester, NY. The historical basis for the allowable exposure to gamma, the whole-body type was based on 10% of the exposure level that produced detectable biological effects. Some 30 years after the first levels were published, the level was reduced to the present levels as a precautionary measure. So at the present time, a workers exposure is limited to 5% of the threshold of observable biological effects. If the same logic chain is applied for RF, your 100 watt station would produce exposures of roughly 0.12% of the threshold exposure. Now gamma rays and RF are not in the same energy ballpark, RF would be characterized as thermal radiation while gamma is ionizing but this is as close as I can get for comparison. Part 97 says to use the minimum power necessary for communication. With your wife's pregnancy as an additional factor, stick to the QRP and give the tubes a rest. 73, Keith, WB2VUO, Wearing my ARRL Tech Coordinator hat today At 15:28 12/17/2003 +0000, you wrote: >Everyone, >I need a good reference on the health effects of RF. It's in the grey plastic carrying case and this case has the blue foam in it, not the old black stuff that used to crumble and cause corrosion. It is complete with all coils and included are a couple of pages from the February, 1981 QST. This is an article describing some "add-on's" that extend the capability of the "Dipper" to measure capacitance and inductance. This makes a good addition to any antenna experimenter's test equipment repertoire. The manual is in near perfect condition and as such is almost a collector's item. With the constant bustle of the season I have not progressed as fast as hoped on the ElmerRadio Crystal Radio, but I have taken a day off from my real job to finish up a few kits. Another reason why it took so long was that I deciced to put maximum effort into the manual. There is a nice section on "How Radio Works" written for beginners that I am particularly proud of. This is a great little kit! The best description at this time can be found on my ebay listing at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2211509321&category=132&rd=1 Sorry for referring folks to ebay but I only had time to do a minimal upgrade to my web pages. A major overhaul will come after the new year. See my add in the upcoming issue of Hombrew magazine. Now for the bottom line. Unfortunately, the parts cost for the crystal radio is HIGHER than the regen. I used really good stuff in it knowing that junk doesn't sell...I want folks to feel like they are getting their money's worth. Introductory price for QRP-L folks will be $24.95 plus $4.00 shipping to the US and Canada. International orders will be actual shipping costs. Insurance (optional but recommended) in the US is an additional $1.30. The kit is available in VERY limited quantities. I am going to take some serious down time here with my family very soon. So, what's up next? Hopefully, before spring of next year the much anticipated (?) ElmerRadio Shortwave Kit will be ready. As with all ElmerRadio kits, the design will be simple and easy to build--with lots of bang in the performance department for the buck. Until next month. Have a joyous and peaceful holiday season. Hug your kids. Tell your wife you love her. 73 Bruce kk7zz www.elmerdude.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 12:47:07 -0500 From: "Armin Hachmer" To: "QRP-L" , "QRP-Canada" Subject: [163271] is GigaParts legit? However, the temp calibration was WAY off when mine arrived, and even though I had things set for the lowest temp, it toasted a board area very quickly. In many respects the KX1 is superior, but the K1 also has its advantages. Let's start with aspects where the two rigs are quite comparable: In the K1, zero-beat spotting can be accomplished with the receiver unmuted using menu item StP, or with the receiver muted via menu item StL. For routine operation, I leave the K1 menu set for StP to make that function readily available. Zero-beat spotting is most convenient on the KX1 using the SPEED function, during which time activating the keyer doesn't transmit RF. The KX1 also has the StL and StP menu items which can also be used for zero-beat spotting, but in both cases the receiver is muted. The basic keyer features of the K1 and KX1 are identical, offering non-volatile mode A or B keying and with non-volatile programmable keying speeds between 8 and 50 WPM. Although the K1 has an optional 10-element internal tuner, and the optional internal tuner for the KX1 has only 7 elements, the two are approximately equal in usefulness, since the K1 tuner requires operation over a wider frequency range. Both rigs are considerably enhanced by these well-designed options. Because of fine engineering and very detailed instructions in the manuals, both the K1 and KX1 are easy to build and either one would be an appropriate choice as a beginner's kit project. Here are features which are superior in the K1 compared with the KX1: The basic K1-2 offers a choice of CW portions of any two bands between 80 m and 15 m (excluding the USB 60 m allocations, of course), or four bands with the K1-4 or on an optional module which is designed for 40, 30 and 20 meters, plus a choice between 15 and 17 meters. The 2-band or 4-band modules can be swapped so that the K1 will cover six bands total. I have my 4-band module configured for 40, 30, 20 and 15 m, and my 2-band module includes 80 and 17 m bands. In addition, the K1 firmware also allows 160 m operation with the 2-band module and some operators have implemented it, including W3FPR. See Don Wilhelm's and Wayne Burdick's postings on this subject in the archives of the Elecraft e-mail reflector for 21 November 2003, available through the website. The basic KX1 covers the 20 m and 40 m bands, and the 30 m band can be added with a tiny and inexpensive optional module which is permanently mounted between the main board and the control panel. So, for the number of amateur bands covered the K1 is better, especially with its capability of 80 m operation, which can be important for routine contact through traffic nets from lengthy wilderness treks. Traffic nets are most commonly found on the 80 m band. Without that 80 m capability on the KX1, I will have to make a point of breaking a trip at midday to check into the LSB Noontime Net on 7268.5 kHz at noon Pacific time. Another option is the 7th Region Net DRN7, which meets daily on 7238 kHz at 0945 and 1515 Pacific time. Both RIT and XIT are available on the K1, whereas the KX1 sports only an RIT. Power output is easily programmable from the K1 front-panel from 100 mW to 7 W. The KX1 power output can be controlled via an accessible trimpot using a tiny screwdriver from approximately 100 mW to about 4 W, depending on the input voltage used. The KX1 power trimpot is not designed to be adjusted frequently. The K1 has a nice-sounding built-in speaker which is muted when a plug for an external speaker or headphones is inserted. The KX1 is designed principally for use with headphones, but the audio level is sufficient for using an external speaker. I intend to carry a speaker with my KX1 in a backpack to free me from having to be tethered to the rig while operating it. It is frequently convenient to listen to a radio while carrying out camp chores. At home I very seldom use headphones with the KX1. The K1 has provision for an optional noise blanker against ignition or similar noise sources, whereas the KX1 has no noise blanker option. The well-designed 4-pole crystal audio filter in the K1 has three programmable steps, a better design than the 3-pole crystal audio filter of the KX1 with its analog front panel control pot and noticeable audio attenuation at the narrow end. A slight nod has to go toward the K1 in the audio filter department, but the KX1 filter is convenient and wide-ranging enough for normal CW operation or for listening to AM or SSB transmissions. The audio stage automatic gain control of the K1 can be turned on and off, whereas in the KX1 the AGC is always active. This is really a safety feature in the KX1, however, since that radio is designed principally for use with earphones. Both the K1 and KX1 have two beacon-capable message memories, but the K1 has a 90-character capacity in each memory, whereas the KX1 memories holds up to 48 characters each. The following are the characteristics where the KX1 outshines the K1: Designed from the start as a trail-friendly radio, the KX1 is lighter and less bulky than the K1. The K1 has no audio feedback interface system. The basic KX1 has a comprehensive and programmable audio feedback interface system which is the best I've ever experienced. With a smaller encoder knob installed, the KX1 is an ideal radio for a totally blind operator, and KX1 audio feedback is a great backup for sighted hams as well. The K1 uses an analog varactor diode tuning system which yields a maximum total range of about 150 kHz per amateur band, whereas the KX1 has a far superior DDS rotary encoder tuning system which not only allows full amateur band coverage, but non-transmitting receive coverage considerably beyond the specified amateur bands. In addition, the KX1 tuning speeds are 5 kHz, 1 kHz, 100 Hz and 10 Hz per encoder step. This makes large or small frequency excursions very convenient with the KX1. The K1 can be equipped with a versatile, but heavy optional wide-range tilt-stand, whereas the controls-on-top KX1 design make such a tilt stand completely unnecessary. While the K1 has a single-step RF attenuator, the KX1 sports a more versatile analog RF gain control. The only K1 option which I would not recommend is its 8-cell optional internal battery holder. The reason I don't like it is that it is very awkward to access in the shack, to say nothing of the field. A 6-cell internal battery holder comes standard in the basic KX1. It is considerably more convenient than the K1 version. Its only disadvantage is that with only 6 cells, the KX1 produces lower output power than when using a 12 to 14 Vdc external power source. The KX1 internal battery holder can be loaded while operating from an external power source, and the radio will draw from whichever source produces the higher voltage. For outdoor operation, I prefer to carry 6 AA lithium cells inside the KX1 but normally operating with an 8-cell external AA holder available from RadioShack. In cold weather or on lengthy trips I always use AA lithium cells in the external holder. For an overnight trip in the summer, 8 alkaline AA cells would do fine to power the KX1. The KX1 is very well designed for CW-to-LSB or CW-to-USB cross-mode operation, while on the K1 cross-mode operation is only practical on the 17 m band, and there only with non-standard LSB transmissions. Since my life was once saved by just such a cross-mode contact, I'll admit a personal bias strongly in favor of the KX1 because of this feature. Only on the 7.1+ MHz band are a few shortwave broadcast stations receivable with the K1, whereas the KX1 has extensive shortwave receive coverage, especially with the optional 30 m adapter installed, and the KX1 produces surprisingly good audio quality for SSB or AM reception. The K1 has a scrolling non-illuminated liquid crystal display which is difficult to read in some conditions, but the KX1 has a variable-brightness low-current LED display which is not only easy to read in varying conditions, but it can be programmed to turn off after a period of inactivity. The K1, like the K2, comes equipped with a hard plastic tuning knob, while the plastic tuning knob on the KX1 is rubber-ringed for better grip, especially using gloved fingers. The K1 requires the use of an external key or keyer, but optional detachable iambic keyer paddles are available for the KX1. The KX1 is also compatible with an external key or keyer. A frequency memory on the K1, if it could be called that, is only possible by retaining the position of the 10-turn tuning potentiometer on a given band. The KX1 has one non-volatile last-stored frequency/mode memory per band plus three more non-volatile frequency/mode memories per band. No lighting is available on the K1, but an independently-switchable LED logging light on the KX1 can also be used as an emergency flashlight. Some users may wish to replace the standard white LED with a red one to discourage neighboring insects from joining the party for CW lessons. The base model K1-2 (2-band version) price is $289 + S&H; the K1-4 (4-band version) is $349 + S&H. The K1 with all options starting with the K1-4 is $621 + S&H. The K1 with all options starting with the K1-2 is $631 + S&H. The basic KX1 costs $279 + S&H, or $456 + S&H with all options. I own both a K1 and a KX1 and I don't intend to sell either one, but if I had to choose between them, I'd go for the KX1. 72, J. I would add just one further point. Since the K1 has an analog L-C VFO, its spurious-free dynamic range is larger than the KX1's DDS VFO. The same would be true in comparing any L-C vs. DDS implementation. In typical field operating circumstances, the KX1's DDS VFO does very well; the simplicity, wide tuning range, and low current drain of DDS is ideal for a trail radio. But the K1 receiver would have the edge in some cases, such as in a major contest where most of the stations were operating at high power levels. The better the SFDR, the less likely you are to suffer from a general increase in IMD. This is one reason we consider the four-band K1 to be an ideal home QRP CW rig. 73, Wayne N6KR _________________________________________________________________ Tired of slow downloads? David, We all do! There are several different accounts to be found. As a medical practitioner specialising in research (but not a radiobiologist), and a ham, I have kept quite an interest in this field (if you'll pardon the pun) and discussed it with specialist colleagues on many occasions. 1. You're an alarmist or conspiracy theorist: Working QRP should be OK, but anything else will do untold damage to all living organisms within a mile or two. The evidence to support this is, well, scant at best, but you can extrapolate from some small studies on cells, add a bit of imagination, and RF can do terrible things. Whilst you're about it, I should kill all AC power supply to your house, etc. 2. You're a legislator or a stickler for the law: Follow the step-by-step RF exposure calculations linked to from the ARRL site to which you have been referred. I gather that you are required to operate within those limits, although you mustn't ask too hard how those limits were arrived at (shades of 1 start to appear). Thankfully, here in the UK no-one has questioned the 4 x 7 el 2 metre array that I can beam at our bedroom window, presumably to supplement the house heating when it's cold, or defrost frozen food :-) 3. You're a seeker after truth: In spite of huge efforts in many different studies, no-one has yet demonstrated any acute or chronic effects of RF exposure beyond simple tissue heating, across the frequencies used by amateurs (when you get up into microwaves, things can change a bit, of course). Amateurs and professionals have for many decades been putting high power RF emitters remarkably close to people with relative impunity. The few humans who have been exposed (accidentally) to RF sufficient to cause significant tissue heating have either suffered local burns (with which most of us are familiar!), or in severe whole-body cases mild hyperthermia (in fact RF has been proposed for use in rewarming those with hypothermia). Intensive long-term follow-up of celebrated cases has failed to show any evidence of any other effects. This does not mean that there may not be very infrequent problems (i.e. relatively small increases in risk of rare but emotive conditions such as brain tumours or leukaemia), because they are notoriously hard to detect. But as they are hard to detect because of their infrequency, we are dealing with very unlikely consequences anyway. Tissue heating is in any case not a desirable effect during pregnancy - the placenta and embryo/foetus like to be kept at the right temperature - but you would really need to be close to a QRO-driven beam before that became a significant risk. Never forget that RF is a *NON*-ionising radiation, unlike the more sinister forms of ionising radiation that often get confused. Biologically that makes a very big difference. 4. You understand risk and relative risk: Your wife and daughter are at much higher risk from most other things, some of which people seem to be much less aware of. Radon in certain locations is a much more significant health risk, and although this is sometimes highlighted and addressed, there are many high-radon areas around the world that are unaware of the risks. Viral infections such as colds, flu, and the childhood infections (measles, etc.) account for many more failed pregnancies and birth defects than you might think. On the other hand, traditional warnings about physical exertion during pregnancy are now being demonstrated to be plain wrong. So what would I do? Operate freely QRP anyway (it's much more fun!) which by any account will be zero risk. When I operate /P and people start getting bothered about this type of concern, I reassure them that they will be exposed to more RF from their mobile phone than from my QRP station. However, I wouldn't have a problem operating QRO from time to time, just not for long digital mode contests :-) I wish all four of you health and happiness, 72, Howard. These are rectangular shaped and are approximately 0.220 inch x 0.350 inch x 0.370 inch. They are very light weight but have a lot of holding power (just ask Chuck Adams, K7QO). I estimate the holding power to be several pounds! 3 or 4 of these magnets epoxied to the base of the ScQRPion paddle and stuck down to a heavy steel object (aka radio) will keep the paddle very steady. In fact, you may have to use a pry bar to get the paddle off! We are selling these magnets at $1 each + $1 shipping (in USA) for up to 10 magnets. I will get a picture up on the web in a day or so.
