It's scavanged from an old VCR. Look in the preamp of an old VCR and you might find an N channel FET you can use. On the other hand, maybe I should go in with you on a parts order, my rig might work better. It tends to demodulate AMBC signals in the 41 meter band, if the signals get strong enough at night. I think it might be due to VFO output being a bit on the low side, around 3v p-p measured at the VFO FET's source pin. Overall, though, the rig works really well and is a lot of fun to use. I just finished building a "ugly/manhatten" version of the rig for 40m. I can stick a picture of it on a web page if anyone is interested. Fran km1z >>Ok, the earlier wants were too easy. Like many, I don't have room for an 80 m dipole or inverted vee, and even the 88 ft doublet won't quite fit. I do have a horizontal loop snaking around the back yard that's approximately a full wave on 40 m. Even with a good ATU the loop won't load very well on 80 m, but after a suggestion from a list member, I opened the corner of the loop opposite the feed point. With that change it was only "half bad," I could effect an ATU match with VSWR under 1.5 and I managed a few PSK-31 QSOs with the Four State QRP Group last winter using my Warbler. Opening the loop seemed to make it less effective on 40 meters, though. So laziness prevailed and the loop stayed closed and I stayed away from 80 meters. But a few days ago I was reading an old QST article about coaxial cable traps and decided to make one tuned to 3.6 MHz to install at the far corner of the loop. Murph's "Ham Calc" program has a nice calculator for coax traps. 11 1/4 turns of RG-174 on a piece of 2" PVC came out just about dead on the money when checked with the dipmeter and Rx. Now the loop loads up nicely on 80 m, and performance appears not noticeably different on 40 and up. Time to dig out the Warbler again - how about it 4SQRP - up for another round of Wednesday Nite Warbles? Oh.... about 80 m and the Fox Hunts..... how about a pilot program... an 80 m truffle as an experiment. However, the DDS Daughtercard was designed to stack "piggy-backed", thus making two DDS cards conveniently available. Then, coupled with KK7P's suggestion, the two boards/DDS chips could be slaved to produce the quadrature output signals. Perhaps a better way to achieve this result is to use a DDS chip such as the AD9854 that naturally produces two outputs with 90-deg phase difference. The only pc board I know that is currently (almost) available is the AA0ZZ "IQ-VFO" board, also known as the "High Performance DDS VFO" project as published in QRP Homebrewer magazine, issue #10. (You can see the QHB Extra web page for this project at http://www.njqrp.org/qhbextra/10/10a.html.) This board contains several PIC microcontrollers for full "VFO" functionality, and it drives an AD9854 DDS chip to produce some very good quality quadrature signals. Jim Kortge, K8IQY has worked with designer Craig Johnson, AA0ZZ to document some really superb performance results with this board. I have a tube of PIC16C54 and PIC16C56 that I would like to use. I only have experience programming PIC16F84 with homebrewed programmers. I understand that the PIC16C5X chips use a parallel type of program data entry and so cannot be programmed with the same hardware. Considering that these chips are OTP and I would like to not waste any on a learning curve, are there any tried and true programs and programmer designs that anyone can recommend to the homebrewer (i.e. not commercial stuff)? Yeah, I understand that these chips are pretty ancient but certainly they are still useful. Any comments are greatly appreciated. The last time I checked, when I tried placing a call with an old non-acti= vated cel phone, I was routed to something called "Roamer Plus". That gave you= the option of placing a collect or credit card call. They might not be aroun= d any more, and it might not work on all systems, but it could come in handy fo= r occasional emergency calls. If they are still around, there are a couple of warnings to keep in mind:= 1. The calls are very expensive. As I recall, it was something along th= e lines of $2 per minute. 2. The system would accept a Visa or MasterCard number, but I would be extremely reluctant to use a credit card number over an analog cel phone.= In an emergency, however, being able to place a collect call would be handy.= As I recall, this system worked on both analog systems in the Minneapolis= -St. Paul area. If it doesn't work the first time you try it, switch the phon= e from the "A" system to the "B" system. To access this, you dial a number= (any seven or ten digit number) and press the "send" button. You get an announcement that the system doesn't recognize you, and your call is transferred, where you are given instructions for placing a call. There = is no charge up to this point, so if you want to check it out, you can see if i= t will work in an emergency without incurring any expense. It's klunky and expensive, but it has the advantage of not having any up-= front cost if you want the phone just for occasional emergencies. I would suspect that the blackouts at R1 levels at this time are due to the "lack" of an ionosphere (low MUF) rather then high absorbtion as usual. If not then it is truly a mystery to me. If you look at the 3000 km path MUFs (Maximum Useable Frequency) near the bottom of the Web page below you can see the "ionospheric hole" over the US at our night but in other parts of the world it looks like 6m could even be open on some DX paths. http://dx.qsl.net/propagation/propagation.html The numbers do indicate the bands should be great and I think they probably are for much of the world, just not us at night. Even those of us who are fortunate enough to have the room may not want to be so obvious to their neighbors. What tot do? Look for alternate antenna possibilities. I did and was rewarded, so can you. There are any number of vertical antennas which are used at 80 meters and WILL FIT ANY PROPERTY. You will have to learn about grounds, but that is part of ham radio! There are other types of wire antennas that can be used. If you can fit a 66 foot wire into your lot you have a quarter wave atnyenna that can be made to work on 80. I successfully used a 40 foot "long wire" on 80; it required a very good ground, but it worked! Try tying the two ends of your 40 meter loop together and operating them against a good ground. They'll probably surprise you with their performance. If your like the guy above but are willing to learn, then you will learn to *LOVE* menus and Yaesu. All the Yaesu radios beginning with the FT-817 have very few knobs and buttons. But it seems that every knob has 3 functions and every button up to 4 functions, depending on what happend last, or how long you hold the button down. All of this causes the first guy above to sell his Yaesu FT-XXX a week after he gets it. It causes others to just panic and study the owners manual. It makes me smile because I understand this technique. The little FT-817 has 57 Standard Menu Items! If you press the orange F key fully for a second you can look at all 57 items. If you just tap the F key you get some more menus of common functions like keyer on-off, preamp on-off, ect. The tiny VX-2R handy-talkie has 48 Standard Menu Items. It takes hours to learn what each Item does. You discover you can do some really good things with this radio. I learned to scan a whole band and I have it set to linger on a busy frequency for 3 seconds. I can stop it and write down the frequency. Then save these frequencies to memory. Then scan the memory section. An Item also puts CTCSS tones on your transmission when needed. So if you decide to buy a Yaesu be warned; you need to learn to use menues and multi-function buttons. I even dug out my 6C8 regen rx out of the shed. There was a article in a 73mag that featured a regen and transmitter. If I remember right you could build it up one way, then the artile had differenent things you could do to it. I think it used 6SN7's, maybe it was a single one. It was built on a piece of wood. All I can remember about the transmitter was I think it worked 80 & 40m, and used a cheapie slide switch for the bandswitch. I can almost picture the cover seems like it was green and yellow. Like a quarter wave vertical, the inverted L requires a good ground system for best results. I have the antenna for 160 which was sold by Jade Products as the "end fed Marconi." It's basically a quarter wave of twin lead with shorts in appropriate places. I have a tree the right distance from my tower to support the far end of this antenna. My question is that when using a tower to support the vertical portion of an inverted L, how far away from the tower should the wire be hung? I would prefer to use the tower to support the vertical portion in order to get the feed point closer to the shack, and to be able to have the far end high enough in the tree to keep the bent angle considerably greater than 90 degrees. It's a lot of 10 Merrimac double balanced mixers, packaged, with SMA connectors. (Mini Circuits is far from the only company that makes this sort of thing. Merrimac has been around quite a while, but not nearly as well known in the ham community.) These are their model DMM-2-250, level 7 (+7 dBm LO drive), rated 1-500 MHz on the RF side, 0-500 MHz on the IF side. The data sheet can be seen at http://www.merrimacind.com/rfmw/data_sheets/D/Dmm2.pdf The eBay item number is 2582278512. This auction has about 2 days left, with no bids so far. The minimum is $29.99, and for ten of these that's quite a bargain, even considering the shipping charge. (Of course the SMA connectors could be a drawback for some people.) If ten is too many for you, you can always pass the extras along to other homebrewers. I might bid on this one myself (although I wouldn't go very much above the minimum, being an old cheapskate), but I've already purchased a big pile of Mini Circuits splitter/combiners and directional couplers in the last couple weeks and need to take a deep breath and watch my wallet for a while :-) While you're at it, click on "View sellers other items." He has been overseas for Christmas and stationed away in the states for the last five years. He will be here hopefully, this Christmas day to open his presents with the family. Not in Iraq, not in Bahrain, and not somewhere in the desert of Saudi. For three years he was over there making it safer for us and trying to survive. So my radio time will be less and my family time more. Most of all I won't see the name of his ship, the boarding party from his ship or the Seal team missing members this year. He will be here and we will be happier. In memory of the two friends of his that drowned on an Iraqi freighter the "IKEL" with drugs, arms and illegal oil that they confiscated, that sank in the Gulf with all 10 of his team on there, we will have a wonderful glorious Christmas here at my house. My son and 7 others survived the 30 foot seas and a moonless night for over 3 hours and were picked up. Two were not so fortunate, my son and I both will miss them, and one of the best Christmas presents was his safe return. Another happened the other day when they finally found "Mr. I Want to Negotiate" himself and put him in custody. Looking forward to another year with the the group and a lot of outings and expeditions. I talked with Paul/AA4XX and others here recently and we plan to go to the mountains, the coast and here and there in-between too. So keep a watch and we will see how it all works out. I have spoken with several of you and some have new gear, new camping gear, a newer larger Taj Mahal tent, and of course we have learned and fine tuned our camping traits to a point that I am sure we will have more fun this year and try out new antennas, new gear, and some new sets of paddles. We have several new members who also only work SSB so far and we will be operating on that part of the band too. So for those of you who do not do the CW part, don't fret, we will be in contact by voice too. I love this hobby, we are so gifted. I am hoping that someone in the group will come forth and show us some digital communications and hopefully we will get into the higher spectrums and delve to try that too. The main characteristic for this application is an input range that extends down to the negative rail, and having the output be specified for rail-to-rail operation. I would just look for a rail-to-rail input and output. That certainly covers the input range. The input impedance of almost all op-amps is very high. Usually multi-meg ohm. Although this op-amp has unusually high input, I think it is probably overkill. I think an LM358 would work in this application. Using a bi-color LED, the green light is on if the battery is over 11.5 volts, it turns orange (by alturnating between red and green, quickly) between 11.5 and 11.0 volts and red below 11 volts. You can also program it for your own custom voltage trip points, if you want to use it with other types or voltage batteries. (you need to have a variable supply to set the trip points) It draws about 10 ma ( 5 for the cpu and 5 for the led), so you might want to wire it up with a NO push button, so it's not on all the time. I'm not going to bother having a circuit board made for it, because it only uses a few parts - the cpu, low power voltage regulator, three resistors and two caps.
