That part of the reason why I have two of them mounted at right angles. On 40 they show a little directivity, a lot on 20 and on the higher bands, having the ability to switch from one to the other allows all the nulls from one to be filled by the lobes of the other. A win-win situation! 73, George W5YR w5yr@att.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick McKee" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2003 4:48 PM Subject: Re: Frustrated Ham has idea? It may even get added to the Super DSWK chip for the DSW's. The mode, for those who don't know what it is, is simply that if you are sending dits and close both paddles, you now send dahs. If you are sending dahs, and close both paddles, you now send dits. That's it. Nothing more. Why does anyone care? It seemed to me that the Ultimatic system made more "head sense" than iambic a or b. I can't seem to get my head around how to use mode a or b, but I can figure real quickly how, and how many letters, I can use with the Ultimatic mode. However, if I had to get my head around how to use a bicycle, I'd still be a pedestrian. While I still will hold out for Ultimatic, I believe that if I quit thinking about it and just sat down with the keyer for a while, I'd probably let the "head" in my fingers figure mode a or b out for me in no time at all. It is a beautiful kit and went together without a hitch. I did make one mod that may be of interest to some of you. Instead of using the 3V Lithium Ion battery and holder I chose to use a 2 cell AA battery holder. In this way I can use two 2000mAHr NiMH cells that cost me $1.25 each. I wasn't interested in portability and worried about the additional weight and space on the workbench. I have not priced the 3V Lithium Ion batteries and that wasn't really an issue. I measured 2.89V applied to the kit and it did draw 2.57mA as measured with a new Web-Tronic DMM that I purchased for $9.99 last week at Circuit Specialists in Phoenix. One of those I'll buy myself a present impulse things.... :-) It is the only meter that I have that has a 200uA scale which will come in handy for the Elmer160 course and some measurement of uP current drains under some conditions. Any way with the two AA cells I figure over 500 hours of operation before I have to recharge and that will most likely be due to shelf life. I dug out the old TenTec Argonaut V transceiver that I had packed away. It was going to WY in November for the ARRL CW SS contest but that trip got canceled the day before due to a winter storm moving through UT and into WY and making driving dangerous. There was a big multi-truck pileup during a white-out condition that occurred that day also. Bummer. I had not even unpacked the antennas, etc. Upon power up the TenTec read exactly S9 with 50uV input from the XG1. TenTec advertises that they calibrate the S-meter before the rig leaves the factory. With 1uV output from the XG1 the S-meter shows exactly an S3 reading. If you have a bunch of 40 meter rigs (and you can listen on the harmonics which I haven't tried yet), this is the kit that will allow you to compare receiver performance. And for a single rig compare audio output using different headphones which a lot of people need to do to see what is going on with the real cheap headphones and even some of the more expensive ones. Also to mark the QRP calling frequency on those homemade dials and to adjust LO to include the QRP frequency. This is not a kit that you want to buy and put it unopened along with the other N (where N is large) unbuilt kits and you know who you are. :-) ;-) I am not an employee of Elecraft, but it would be a fun place to work. I did try the XG1 as input to the Heathkit IM-2410 and found that it was not sensitive enough to read the frequency, but the Argonaut V with the TXCO shows 7.040MHz on the button. Also the Tektronix T932A 35MHz O'scope would not trigger either at 50uV in the 2mV scale with 1:1 input. I have an accurate attenuator but haven't played with detecting minimal signals with any of the rigs yet. Saving that for a snowy day. Check http://www.qsl.net/xg1.html for the photos. They are medium resolution with the Toshiba digital and about 100KB each, so those with the slower modems will just want to look at a couple. Enjoy. In that sense, it is a "unity gain" device. Different antennas concentrate the radiated input power in different regions of space and hence produce a higher field strength in one region than in others. That is the conventional usage of the term "gain" in discussing antennas. But, from the quotee's perspective, even the17 element Yagi can radiate only the power it receives from the feedline; i.e., the total radiated power equals the total input power less any loss in the antenna structure. Hence his emphasis on "unity gain" for such an antenna. While interesting and true and at times a useful concept, I do believe that the person being quoted makes a bit much of an obvious point. 73, George W5YR w5yr@att.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Goody K3NG" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2003 6:58 PM Subject: Re: Frustrated Ham has idea? > > You are missing one important concept; A WIRE ANTENNA IS JUST A WIRE > > ANTENNA. If it does, > I can't figure it out. Actually, it does. Using the bug mode, the dah side of the paddle becomes a straight key. Instead of a paddle, a straight key could be connected. ===== Tom Sevart N2UHC http://www.geocities.com/n2uhc __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Will the AmQRP crystals shown in the ref website work in boatanchor rigs (like the Heath AT-1, Viking Adventurer, etc.)? If so, would it be possible to physically mount the entire AmQRP crystal in an empty FT-243 crystal holder which would make it more compatible with the BA stuff. Has anyone done this and if so, shed any tips on the process? Thanks for reading..
