I bought a "FT-342" crystal on eBay a year or so ago. It quit rather quickly in my TBS-50D. Opened it up, and it was an HC49, soldered to the FT-243 pins. I have used them with no trouble in my HW-16. This is a concept I probably knew since ,y college days back in the 60's. HOwever I never had a course in HF antennas we mostly studied microwaves. The odd point here is that it is true there too. What prompted my statement is the noticeably trend of ow members to talk about, and try different single wire antennas expecting great improvements And then they are disappointed by the results they get. There is no difference in any single wire antennas when erected in he same place and operated at the natural resonant frequency. At non resonant frequencies there may be some differences but, for examine, three is no pattern difference between a dipole fed by coax, or a dipole fed by twin or open wire feeders, or a windom, or a G5RV, or anything else. Passive antennas, and that's all we work with DO NOT have the capability to generate any power. They simply radiate the power they are fed by the feed line. Where do the great gain numbers associated with beams come from? They come about from pattern shaping. The yagi is designed to radiate in only ONE direction. The physical and electrical design is such that signal reinforcement occurs from signal REFLECTED by the reflector and added to the signal present at the driven element and again reinforced by the directors. But the beam set to radiate at say, 90 degrees. There is subanstiall less energy radiated at 270 degrees ( front to back ratio) or at 0 degrees and 180 degrees ( side lobe repression). But the yagi generates it extra gain because of its additional elements and geometry. It actively adds no energy. But here we are talking about improving a single wire antenna. Right now it is an 80 meter inverted configuration. It is fed with twin lead so it can be used an multiple frequencies. It's radiation is apparently poor so the owner wants to replace it with another antenna, maybe a G5RV, oe replace it with a vertical. Neither of these antennas will result in a stronger signal for our user. They cant, they are simple passive antennas. They can't increase his signal radiation. They may, reduce his radiation level at some frequencies. I agree there may be pattern lobe differences at non resonant frequencies, but those are likely to be minor directional differences but no real radiation differences. Now, if he has the money, space, and inclination to replace (or augment) his antenna arsenal with a yagi stucture for the higher frequency bands, he will have DIRECTIONAL gain that will help his radiated signal. But yagi's come at a high cost. There is another alternate to improve radiation at low frequencies the wrier beam. Joel Dennison has quite a bit of experience with them. He has his wire antenna(s) located in a place where they are high. In addition he has sufficient space on both sides of the main antenna where he has installed passive reflectors or directors. These additional elements do add to the radiated signal (passively of course), but at the expense of high real estate costs and radiation direction. This is why I recommended he consider any sources of loss in his current antenna. If he finds no loss sources, he needs to look at other things, like how to actually work DX. Just because he can hear DX stations does not mean he can work them. If he has proof that he can work the distance, i.e. he can work the corners of the YS from his QTH, he can work DX if he is in the right place at the right time. Patience has worked more states and countries than almost any other way. [g] With continuing holiday events, didn't have much time to work this one. With my new 88 ft EDZ fed as a top-loaded long wire, results seemed much better than previous years. Sat evening early I started with QRP and worked 5 Qs in short order. Looked good for QRP activity but had to quit for family gathering. When I got back a few hours later, the only Qs I could make were at 5 W + 13 dB. Figuring things would be better in the morning for QRP I closed things down. This morning, QRP didn't do well either (no Qs in over 30 minutes @ 5W) so the rest of the time was QRO. Worked a total of 53 Qs and 44 grids. Several on both coasts at about 1400 km and my personal best ever on 160 at any power level. Most likely the antenna was the limiting factor. Gonna have to see if I can string a BIG loop through the (many many) trees out here in the woods. I use mine in both the qrp version of the HW-16 and a Knight T-60. Since the rigs you mentioned are cathode keyed, you may want to series a #47 bulb in the crystal circuit, or as Mike Branca W3IRZ (SK) of the NoGaQRP group mentioned - a 10 to 10k resistor. I used a 10k in my T-60 which seems to work ok. Some have reported no problems, others problems. The general consensus seems to be that rigs using an ECO (Grid-Plate) or Modified Pierce oscillator with either the 6AG7 or 6CL6 are a safe bet. The NorCal and Expanded Spectrum Systems rocks are inexpensive enought that a "try it and see what happens" test is probably the best way to go. Installing them into a FT-243 holder is fairly simple. On the crystals I modified, I hogged out the bakelite housing using a Dremel with a burr bit. Worked peachy. Due to the physical characteristics of quartz crystals and the size of the crystal unit itself there are limits as to how much current they will handle. In an oscillator circuit there is a current running through the crystal in operation. The crystal unit is usually rated at some power level, say 5mW for the modern crystals. The older FT-243 crystals ( I use the term loosely in referring to the holder type ) can handle much more current through them. So several things can happen with the newer crystals in old circuits. It will work OK. It will work, but the crystal will heat up and it will drift in frequency. It will work, but only for a short period of time until the crystal will fail through several possible causes ---- fracture of the crystal being one. So the easiest way is to experiment with your setup. Take notes and then write up an article on your findings and share it with others. The old Viking Adventurer was the first big kit I ever did. Spent many an hour on the air with it during the old Novice days. The crystal current may vary significantly between the rigs dependent upon power requirements of the rig and the type of oscillator circuit used, of course. I spent several years of my undergraduate days at McMurry College in Abilene, TX working with Dr. Virgil E. Bottom, author of "Introduction to Quartz Crystal Unit Design" published by Van Nostrand Reinhold, for projects with Collins Radio, James Knight Co, and HP. This book is out of print and you will need to search in libraries and online to find a copy. In the January 2004 issue of QST there is an article by Richard J. Thompson, Jr entitled "... And We Had Crystals". Thompson is current chair of the Department of Physics at McMurry College. The mathematics in the book will not be easy if you have not had some undergraduate physics and some advanced mathematics, but it would be worth the effort to work through the materials if you really want to know what's going on 'under the hood'. Dr. Bottom passed way recently and he will be missed by all of us that worked with him and were students of his. I will always remember a lot of things that he said during classes and in casual conversations and from his writings. But one thing that he started that I wish some one had taken up when he gave it up. He had one of the original Ge transistors manufactured in the first batch by Motorola Corp. He made a single transistor AM receiver powered by a single AA battery on a breadboard. Fahnstock clips and all. He changed the battery every year and kept a note on the wooden board when this was done. He wanted to see how long the transistor would last, but he gave the project up when he moved to a retirement home. I'm sure any one of that were a student of his would have gladly taken on the project and passed it on to the next generation. I know some of you still have CK722's and other old old transistors sitting in the itsy teensy weensy cardboard container on the shelf. An antenna is a unity gain device in that it cannot radiate more energy than it is fed. However, wires can have gain by removing radiation from one direction and placing it in another. One can do this without adding additional elements by making the wire longer. A wire that is a full wave long will have gain over a half wave dipole, an extended double Zepp will have a bit more gain, a 1.5 wavelength wire will have a bit more gain. You can model this or measure it; it does occur. If an antenna is a half wavelength long, it will have roughly the same pattern, no matter where it is fed. The G5RV is one and a half waves long and will have a clover leaf type pattern with maximum gain at 45 degree angles to the wire. It will have gain over a dipole. Now, if the wire is longer than a half wavelength, the feed point does make a difference in the pattern. As the feed point is moved toward one end the radiation maxima are shifted toward the other end. On very long antennas this effect is quite pronounced. These effects can be modeled or measured as well. Now for some Geography. The distance from Box Elder SD to Houston TX, about as far south in Texas as one can go, is 1076 miles (1732 kM). The distance from Box Elder SD to Dartford, Kent, England is 4407 miles (7092 kM). The distance from Box Elder SD to Key West FL is 1805 miles (2906 kM) The dsistance from Box Elder SD to Stockholm Sweden (Northern Europe) is 4538 miles (7335 kM). There is a big difference in distance between working these state side stations from SD and working Europe from SD. More than a factor of 2. These will require multiple hops, particularly with a low antenna. The first few hops, particularly iwht a low antenna will likely be over land as well, which will add more loss than if those hops were over sea water. Verticals have significantly lower angle of radiation than do low horizontal antennas. If your long wire has a vertical section, it is probably radiating at a lower angle of radiation than an inverted vee at 24 feet. Even a 10 ft vertical section on a long wire is significant on 15 M. Today I had a 30m CW contact with Bob, AA4CX, who is a member of the N. Georgia QRP club, and we chatted for an hour on all kinds of QRP subjects. He at least was running 5 watts from a K2. Then later today I was tuning around the digital bands on 20 meters and saw a very strong RTTY signal calling CQ. I answered and met Jay, W5JAY who was running 500 watts, but who has been a QRP fanatic for several years and seems to personally know all the "big names" I see here on the list. We talked for over an hour and it was a most pleasant ragchew, nearly all on QRP. (Jay, you have me almost convinced to get that K2!) It just seems I could not get away from QRP this weekend, even when running QRO. Darn, but I just love this hobby! Oh yes, my long wire does have two vertical sections, one running up ALONG the house at the feed end, and one running down a tree trunk at the far ed. I seriously doubt that they add much gain to the antenna. They are just there for convenience in erecting the antenna. I just ran some 4-40 screws into the holes that neede to stay lacquuer-free, held the pieces up and shot lacquer. In hindsight I wish I had used some wire to hang all the bits and pieces so they could dry without having to lay them down or hold them, waving them around to speed up the process. Anyway, the results were reasonably good. The only part I'm not entirely thrilled with is the base; though the lacquer was dry to the touch, it was not fully hard and I put a couple of minor scratches in it while mounting the paddle arms. Oh well, it's still pretty. Now I just need to get a cable on there so I can try 'em out. Of course it will be temporary, I have a keyer baord on the way that's custom-made to bolt right onto the paddle. Opps, did I really let that slip? Last night (Sunday, Dec 28th local) I got on 1810 kHz and called CQ with 5 watts and had a station in Austin come back to me. He wasn't that far away and he started off at 100 watts but he said my signal was so good he would take his transmitter down to 2 watts. We still had a ragchew for over 1/2 and hour. I seem to have a good QRP signal on 160m out to about 500 miles. After that it gets pretty rough. Best DX so far is Martinique at about 2587 miles. My antenna on 160m is a real compromise. I'm using an inverted-L that is resonant as a 1/4 wavelength antenna at about 4.5 MHz and fed with a SGC SG-237 autotuner at its base. I don't have any radials out yet so I'm just using a ground rod. Basically, my antenna is just a "leaky resistor" on 160m. My point is that I am still having good QSO's so if there is anyone out there that thinks that their antenna isn't good enough for 160m give it a try anyway if you can get it to load up. I'll bet that you'll be surprised. If anyone is looking for an antenna for 160m that would fit into a city size lot you might want to consider an inverted-L. Even one that is less then half as big as it should be seems to work okay. It is freeware and is a full blown CW tutor that works quite nicely and is loaded with features. You can even make your own audio CD's for practice in the car, for example. Anyway, this will monitor for you. You can find it at: http://perso.club-internet.fr/f1orl/cwpeng.htm It has a very good help file so if you read it you'll know how to use it as a keying monitor. And altho it was not meant to be used as an off the air monitor, I found it does a reasonable job of copying CW from strong, well sent signals such as code practice from W1AW. Also has decent sized buttons and more of them. The 817 covers a lot more frequencies. I have both, mostly use a K-2 though! If this is going to be your only rig for quite a while the 817 does a wider range of things. I was fiddling with the power supply while I was listening to a QSO, and touched the variable pot which controls the voltage with the conductive case. In one second I could hear the smoke coming out of two electrolytics (an impressive poooffffff) and saw the LCD screen on the FT-817 go dark. Stupid on my part, I know. This power supply has current regulation, but that doesn't do much good when the pass transistor shorts, as I discovered during the post mortem. Why do these transistors always fail short instead of open? And, why doesn't Yaesu have a Zener diode and a fuse for the external supply? I had a resetable 3A fuse in front of my pass transistor which probably saved me from worse damage. Anyway, I need to replace a surface mount 5V voltage regulator ("Q4013; S-81250SGUP-DQD" on the schematic). I think it is an SOT89 package, and I know it needs to pass ~150 mA. Unfortunately, the pin-out is a little strange, with the center pin being Vin, not GND like the ones I've been able to locate. Any ideas on where to find such a part? Does anyone have a dead FT-817 for sale?
