No one has said to stay off the air untill you can send perfect code. No one has suggested that anyone not operate CW unless they can send perfect code. No one has said anything about sending "perfect code". All that was said, was to have enough pride to be proficient enough to be READABLE whenever you do operate CW ! Readable doesn't imply 100% perfection ! In fact, readable doesn't imply perfection in any way ! No one is perfect, not even a computer can send perfect code ! I've heard computers send slight flaws in CW before ! But if I'm trying to have a CW qso with you, and you simply can not send any readable code, then folks are NOT going to be able to work you ! I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is ! I have heard operators on the air that could only send CQ and their call signs in a readable manner, but after they establish a qso, their sending went to pot and nothing else could be understood ! That's what I am talking about, just pure simple readability ! By all means, get on the air ! But do so in a manner that allows the other operator to be able to decipher what you are sending. If that means slowing down to 3 words a minute, then slow down to 3 words per minute ! Don't get in such a hurry that that you make constant mistakes. And here are some suggestions that everyone should already be putting into practice ! 1. Send no faster than you can receive ! 2. When answering a CQ call, match the speed of the person you are answering unless you are unable to comfortably copy at that speed ! 3. Make sure to properly insert character and word spacing when sending ! ! ! 4. Take notes, even if you can copy well in your head - this prevents asking for repeats when you need to answer any questions. 5. Use Q signals, abreviations and prosigns to eliminate unneeded lengthy transmissions ! 6. And last but not least, listen on frequency plus above and below frequency, and only after you know the frequency "appears" to be clear of traffic, ask if the frequency is in use (QRL?) at least twice before you ever start calling CQ ! ! ! ! ! But, after all this, if you do get on the air and you are not able to send READABLE code, don't be supprised if you get the reply: Sri OM, unable to cpy U, 73 AR SK Have fun ! 72/73 de: Rick McKee, KC8AON <> Willow Wood, Ohio <> Grid: EM88rl SW-20+, SW-30+, SW-40+, Norcal BLT, Yaesu FT-7, Homebrew 6V6 tube TX QRP-L #2112, FPqrp #33, AR QRP, AmQRP, Ohio Valley Fists, Zombie #718, MQFD #1 For info on MQFD, go to: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/mqfd I'll give up CW & QRP when I'm dead ! The plans here are to use them and my vintage J-38 key on Straight Key Night tomorrow night. After today's morning skip had lessened and things thinned out a bit on the band, I crossed my fingers, plugged in the J-38, hooked up the set to an antenna, found a clear spot up the band at 7050 kHz, and called CQ. The watt meter showed 35 watts output from the pair of glowing 1625 tubes. WB4EWG, Bob, in Westport, KY, answered and gave me a 599 report! Suddenly, it was 1951 again and I was reliving those "thrilling days of yesteryear." Only this time, with the modern convenience of cable-vision, I wasn't wiping out every TV set in the neighborhood. I had forgotten just how lacking in selectivity those old receivers really were. The AGC action, what little there is of it, is also pitiful by today's standards. Strong nearby stations obliterate weaker ones. Nevertheless, there I was in the middle of a QSO and trying to concentrate on separating WB4EWG from signals of a type never heard on the bands in '51. Bob was being clobbered at times by a digi station near 7050 and an SSB station from south of the border. Wanting to rig the setup just like I did another as a 13-year-old kid in '51, I searched around area electric stores and finally found a knife-switch to use for antenna change-over. To keep the oscillator stable, I let it run continuously during transmit and key the cathodes of the 1625's, then have to shut it down for receive to keep the oscillator from blocking the received signal. This meant throwing the DC switch on the power supply, throwing the knife switch over, and jockeying the volume control up and down on the receiver to control the audio as best I could. Still, with the receiver volume control all the way down, the receiver audio during transmit was so loud it left our poor old deaf dog squirming, and my XYL yelling from the living room "Turn it down!!". It was down. Whew!! Gotta do something to mute that receiver a bit during transmit. How is it that I copy 25 Hounds at 7338.82 and on 7443.23 calling Wayne and Pat and most are not heard. Tuning down 1-2 KHz gets nothing from a Fox. I know they are there calling and calling for Hounds but I hear NOTHING. I can copy K0EVZ 579 and he is about 225 miles away. I hear Hounds that from their call signs are much farther away than Pat in MN. But 40 meters has an effect that keeps Southern Stations from working Northern ones now that conditions are so bad. So again I will wait for about an hour and listen again and expect to hear no Hounds or Foxes. I just heard the Truffel guy Bill and he heard me. But as night closed the band went ZAP! Will listen to 80 CW and see what is going on. Unless things are really stinko - that a technical term used in describing propagation - I and most of the others can usually manage to get both Foxii within the first 10 to 20 minutes of the Hunts. Now that sounds like bragging but it is not intended to be. Rather, I am trying to say that with diligence and really working at it, 5 watts to good wire antennas and occasionally the vertical will usually get the pelts in fairly short order. It helps to have a clean distinctive signal as well. One's fist has a lot to do with how well the signal stands out in a pileup, also. I truly believe that the secret weapon (if there is one to this game) is the receiver. I know from my experience that I use every capability that the Icom IC-756PRO2 offers and frequently I wish for more. My 746PRO is almost the equal and exceeds in some areas. As great a rig as the K2 is, and I love mine dearly, I don't think I could make it through a really tough Fox Hunt evening with the K2 alone. That is my fault and not that of the receiver since many of the leading Hounds run the K2. I guess I am spoiled or whatever, but having the right tools just seems to allow me to hear those vapor signals just a little bit better. Of course, Karl, the real secret is that I know where the Foxes are tuning their receivers so I know where to transmit! <:} After all that, I am embarrassed to say that, yes, I did get the Truffle and both Foxii tonight, Pat at 0203 and Wayne at 0211. And it is a good thing because at this QTH, by 0230Z they were down quite a bit and the noise was rising. By 0245 both were rapidly on their way to being vapor signals. The only recourse here is to wait it out because it seems almost like clockwork that around 0330Z the signals start building again. Wayne came from barely audible in the noise to an honest S5 on the PRO2 meter at the end of the contest. Change of topic sorta: 80 meters might be a most interesting addition to the Fox Hunts for next season. I know that I would enjoy working 80 somehow during the Hunts. That would certainly tend to level the playing field a little more in the areas of propagation, location, etc. So, don't give up, Karl. Remember that we are all on a pretty level playing field here already as far as propagation effects, SSB QRM, QRN, and guys calling on frequency repeatedly when Wayne is saying "up" at the end of every CQ. It's only a hobby, ya know . . . but such fun! <:} 73, George W5YR w5yr@att.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karl Larsen" To: "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2003 8:55 PM Subject: Fox: All Gone > > I have had it with Fox Hunting on 40 meters. Not saying there aren't other problems in the car, but I seem to have narrowed it down a bit. Shawn --- tmyers wrote: > Fuel pump? At least there are not loud carriers that land on Foxes so often on 40. -- - Karl Larsen k5di Las Cruces,NM Az ScQRPions - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 18:01:20 -0500 (Eastern Standard Time) From: "Mike WA8BXN" To: , Subject: [164221] Re: noise from dsl modem Message-ID: <3FF35540.000017.01900@etower> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Got a neighbor with the same modem? See if their's makes noise. Try wrapping your modem and power supply with aluminum foil and see if that gives any clue where the noise is from. Ferrite cores on some of the wires may help too. Is your computer grounded well (separatel;y from your station ground)? Any change with your computer on or off? Good luck! If so, unless you remount it in a grounded metal box... and then treat all the input and output cables. Worth a try is to get a package of Radio Shack #273-104 "Snap-together ferrite choke cores." Wrap as many turns of the power supply wire as you can through the core and position the choke as close as you can to the modem. Start with the power supply line, and try the computer and telephone lines. (Hope it doesn't aftect your dsl signal). You don't have to break any wires or make any soldering connections, but every turn through the choke is equal to installing another choke in the line, so the more turns, the more supression. I have quieted a computer this way. Started by unplugging as much as I could, then pluged in attachments one at a time, noting increase in noise. Put chokes on offending cables. The power supply cable , serial port and telco lines were big radiators. Happy New Year! 73 de Bill, AB6MT billsmith@ispwest.com ----- Original Message ----- From: dave To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2003 2:47 PM Subject: noise from dsl modem I have a dsl modem and either it or the power supply makes for a bunch of rf noise. Is there a good reference on the output of these modems over the phone lines? All the shielding at the modem may not make much difference if all the rf hash is on the phone lines. I may be getting DSL soon, so I am interested in potential interference as well. I know that the phone company mentions filters for phones that experience noise due to DSL. Standing by for the experienced or experts.
