So a 50 ft cable would have half the loss of a 100 ft cable. Take the loss figure given in dB for 100 ft and divide by 100 to get the loss in dB per foot, then multiply that figure by whatever length you are concerned with to find the total loss in dB. This works regardless of cable length. Lengths over 100 feet work the same way. Dipped mica and NP0 have essentially the same stray inductance when mounted to the PC board (5-10nH is typical with a good layout and careful workmanship). For VHF/UHF power circuits, there are special mica caps used in strip-line circuits (think heavy-duty surface mount). These are made to handle considerable RF current, and are more expensive than leaded caps (either mica or NP0). They have very low stray inductance, because they use short fat metal strips instead of round wire leads. Likewise RF-grade ceramic chip caps are a good choice for VHF/UHF circuits. Beware of self-heating from RF current in any power application. At VHF, even small value capacitors can see high RF current: 22pF is 50ohms at 144MHz. The same 22pF cap with 5nH lead inductance resonates at 480MHz. For such a rectifier rated at 16 amps, Does this mean each end pin can handle 16 amps? Or only 8 amps? Assuming each end pin can handle only 8 amps, Can you use one of these for a 16 amp load? I.e. if you have one lead that will carry 16 amps, can you just split it to the two end pins? What is the purpose of using the three-pin arrangment? Worked stns from Canada to Cuba. Just came back from the fencepost after re-tuning the antenna for 40 meters...it was still pretty dark out there amongst all those Cedars. The needle on the WM-2 was barely visible :0) The TS-440S makes such a fine antenna tuner-upper generator...it's never blown up on me as I move around the coax connections during tune-up. Guess the 440's SWR fold-back circuit really works... I do set its power limit to around 2 Watts into the dummy(Bill) load before beginning. Now if that SWBC stn on 7130 KHz would only give it a rest... You know, that light workout with the weights really helped with the stamina for hanging in there with the J-38 ! 73. (indicated on the rig S meter). Rig is FT-857 and antennas are Butternut vertical and 88 ft EDZ at 30 ft. The 857 DSP is good and was able to copy the signal through the noise quite well. There is a storm front moving into the area. At 1200 UTC, the signal is down some to about S1 to S5 with rapid QSB. At 1230 UTC down to S0 to S3 but could copy OK even with QSB. Noise is also down from an hour ago. So why have two diodes to stuff and four pads when one component and three pads will do the job. On the plus side I was able to get my SW-40+ on the air and I did finally make a CW contact, two actually, but now I have no idea where my log book is. I think this year I am going to set my goals much much lower. I just got back in from setting up my too low dipole, apex at 20 feet, and I'll see if I can still copy any CW. I have decided to abandon the idea of buying a fancy bells and whistle first (full blown) station rig and instead think I will try to save my money and get something like a Kenwood TS 520 to go with my SW-40. Get my Az Scorpion paddles put together and see if I can learn to use them with my long ago built but never used TiCK 4 keyer and finally get some air time so that I can quit reading about all the fun you guys have on the air and see if I can get in on the action. If the voltages from the case to the keyed lead are the same sense (either both positive or both negative) try just keying them both at the same time. Alternately you could use a relay controlled by the key with separate contacts to key the VFO and transmitter. If there is chirp keying the VFO, then you may want a VOX-like circuit with some delay time keeping the VFO turned on between the dits and dahs for a while. There should be a phono jack on the back of your 2NT marked "VFO Key". It provides a normally open contact on the relay inside the transmitter that closes on transmit. You want to connect a line from it to the terminal strip on the VFO, with the "hot" side connected to the center conductor of the phono jack. That should key the VFO on when you transmit. You can zero the other guy with, I think, the slide switch on the upper left hand side of the HA-5 front panel. It'll put a tennis ball with 2 extra oz. of weight into just about any tree you could find. I typically use it now only when the wind blows something down, so most of the time it just hangs around the garage looking for work. I'll even include the cannon permit, looks official, might help. Also, if anybody wants to build their own, some of the pvc fittings are kinda odd and not always available at the local home depot. I use the multiple single bead approach on my choke balun, but it's made from RG-58 size coax. RG-174 is small enough that multiple turns through a small ferrite ring is a good solution. But if that appears to be overly bulky, the use of a number of ferrite beads in line would probably be fine too. No tables in front of me, but I suspect you'd want more beads due to the smaller size and corresponding smaller inductance of the little ones. I have ten on my medium sized coax. Maybe 20 would be a good guess for RG-174. (p. 67) That understates the memory capabilities of the KX1. There are actually four memories per band, and both receive mode (normal, LSB and USB) and frequency are saved in each of the four memories per band. The fourth memory for each band is a temporary one which is saved each time the blue BAND button is tapped once. The documented purpose of tapping BAND once is to display the current receive mode and frequency on the low-current LED display. If the audio feedback system is enabled via the CFb menu item or via holding MENU or BAND or RIT upon power-up, then the receive mode and frequency to the nearest kilohertz are enunciated in audible Morse when the BAND button is tapped once. This temporary memory is a most useful operating tool in the KX1 which I use frequently. Having tapped BAND once, whenever I turn the rig off or whenever I return to the original band after having switched bands, that temporary receive mode and frequency will be available for immediate use. Note that if I change bands or turn the rig off without having first temporarily saved the receive mode and frequency by tapping the BAND button, then that receive mode and frequency will not be saved. Suppose, for example, in a crowded tent the tuning encoder gets jostled. Mouser sells these beads as EMI shield beads. RG-174 has an OD of 0.1 inches or so; there is a bead 0.197 inches in diameter that should work, it is part number 523-2643002402. This is a type 43 ferrite that should work fine as a balun from 40 M up. You will need about 20 to 30 of the beads, but at $.18 each that is not a lot of money. They also have a part that is 0.094 inches in diameter, which will work if you remove the outer insulation from the RG-174. Secure the beads with heat shrink tubing. The toroid has the advantage that the inductance grows as n^2 (n-squared) where n is the number of turns. Thus it is easy to get lots of inductance with a few turns on a torroid, while with a bead balun you need to add more beads to get more inductance as that increase in inductance only grows linearly with the number of beads you add. So, the FT114-43 might be a better choice. But, you can also buy a 0.605 inch diameter (ID) EMI shield bead that is 1.125 inches tall from Mouser that you can use as a toroid. 5 or 6 turns of RG-174 ought to fit with a bit of crowding. That is part number 523-2643102002. At $1.67, it will probably be cheaper than using an equivalent number of smaller ID beads to make a bead balun. Just wind as many turns on the bead as will fit. Ferrite is usually better than iron powder cores for broad band baluns as it offers a great deal more inductance per turn. At least that's the speculation of a University of Southern California researcher who has been investigating nanotube transistors. The USC scientist, Bart Kosko, Ph.D., a professor in the school's Electrical Engineering Department, led a study that has demonstrated for the first time that minuscule antennas, in the form of carbon nanotube transistors, can dramatically enhance the processing of electrical signals, a development that could pave the way for improved performance of consumer electronic devices. The finding adds to a growing number of promising electronic components that are nanotube-based, including logic gates for computers and diodes for light displays. The study appears in the December issue of Nano Letters, a monthly peer-reviewed publication of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. "No one knows exactly how these little tubes work or even if they will work out in manufacturing, but they are surprisingly good at detecting electrical signals," says Kosko. "Once we figure out all the parameters that are needed to fine tune them, both physically and chemically, we hope to turn these tubes into powerful little antennas." If all goes well, the tubes could start appearing in consumer products within five to ten years, he predicts. The finding hinges on a well-known but counterintuitive theory called "stochastic resonance" that claims noise, or unwanted signals, can actually improve the detection of faint electrical signals. Kosko set out to show that the theory was applicable at the nano scale. Under controlled laboratory conditions, Kosko's graduate student, Ian Lee, generated a sequence of faint electrical signals ranging from weak to strong. In combination with noise, the faint signals were then exposed to devices with and without carbon nanotubes. The signals were significantly enhanced in the container with the nanotubes compared to those without nanotubes, Kosko says. Although much testing needs to be conducted before the structures are proven to be of practical use, Kosko sees big potential for the little tubes. He says they show promise for improving "spread spectrum" technology, a signal processing technique used in many newer phones that allows listeners to switch to different channels for clearer signals and to prevent others from eavesdropping. Arrays of the tiny tubes could also process image pixel data, leading to improved television images, including flat-panel displays, according to Kosko. The tubes also have the potential to speed up Internet connections, the researcher says. In a more futuristic application, Kosko believes the tubes have the potential to act as artificial nerve cells, which could help enhance sensation and movement to damaged nerves and limbs. The sensors might even be used as electrical components in artificial limbs, he adds. By adjusting the shape, length and chemical composition of the nanotubes, as well as the size of the tube array, they can in essence be customized for a wide-variety of electronic needs, Kosko predicts. I really am looking forward to it. For me, the handiest thing about it, is to use it as an in-place burned-out-front-end checker. It's ~ calibrated output level of1uV output is perfect for that application-as is the 50uV 'other' level. I have some suspicions about my Drake R-7's front end, and this will be perfect to make certain the DG-MOSFET 1st RF isn't shorted. The R-7 has a preamp, and even with it ON, the R-7 seems like it just isn't its old self-even though you can still copy signals. My Icom R-71A sitting right on top of it, fed from the same rcvr distribution amp, SEEMS noticeably more sensitive. (I HAVE swapped both cables and distribution amp channels.) So this small, extremely portable, ~ calibrated output xtal-controlled signal generator will be perfect for comparisons! URL: P.S. I owe several people emails.
