I would like to connect a flat ribbon cable from one set to the other neatly. Does any one manufacturer such a cable that is say 15cm to 30cm in length? I find that the regular right angle connector pins are too large for the socket pins or I would just use two and solder the cable ends to such connectors. I would like to find a commercially available solution so that some one without soldering experience could connect the two systems together for an experiment. Think of it as a Colossus to Guardian connection. (The Forbin Project for you old SciFi watchers.) I can do this the old fashioned way of using #20 solid wire, but I want something that can come and go and not have some one keep up with a bunch of wires. No, I can not replace the machined sockets as these are what comes with the Microchip PICkit(tm) 1 board. Message-ID: <20040106.182709.9558.5.kc8aon@juno.com> Thanks for all the replies on this subject ! I guess I should have explained the reason for asking though ! What I was really trying to figure out though, was "IF" the dipole1.exe program was really accurate or not ? If it say's that a 44' doublet @40' height with 40' of .72 velocity factor 300 ohm twinlead on it shows a 1.1:1 swr at 10.110 mhz, does it prove out in the real world ? or more simply put, "Does the program actually work ?" The 44' doublet was just something I used as an example to run the program with, basically because that's what I use sometimes as a field antenna ! I was comparing it on different bands with the program, and was real supprised when it said something like a 54.2 ohm impedance at 10.110 mhz ! All the other bands showed much higher than this, but the efficiency stayed about the same ! And, I do use this antenna with a tuner ! I either use my old MFJ-901B to which I have added a resistive swr bridge like the one in the BLT, or my Norcal BLT with it ! So, basically has anyone proved the program to be accurate ? When I get the time, I will put up my 44' doublet and check to see if it is ! 72/73 de: Rick McKee, KC8AON <> Willow Wood, Ohio <> Grid: EM88rl SW-20+, SW-30+, SW-40+, Norcal BLT, Yaesu FT-7, Homebrew 6V6 tube TX QRP-L #2112, FPqrp #33, AR QRP, AmQRP, Ohio Valley Fists, Zombie #718, MQFD #1 For info on MQFD, go to: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/mqfd I'll give up CW & QRP when I'm dead ! The A tells you what happened over the past day. I would pay more attention to the K value as well as the WWV forecast of conditions for the next 24 hours. Also be careful when using propagation numbers for 40 meters. Many times I hear people talking about how bad the conditions are during a fox hunt and what the real problem is, is that the band is long. You can go down to the bottom end and easily work a zillion Europeans and Africans with qrp but not hear anyone within 1200 miles or so. 73 de Dave, N0IT ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 18:51:04 -0500 From: "Robert Cerreto" To: "'Jim Cotton'" Cc: Subject: [164659] RE: Homebrewed Test Equipment Message-ID: <000001c3d4af$f29ac360$c15dab44@clvdoh.adelphia.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hey Jim, Gee thanks!!! I think I am beyond that point. I aligned mine with a precision signal generator and kludged up coupler to measure return loss. However, I would LOVE to have some known to be accuate commercial equipment look at it!!! I did this last year and had to put the project away for awhile. So, My filter may need some work. It seems OK. I am not getting any strange spurs or responses in the stop band The SA is about done. I built a 30KHZ resolution filter and moved the IF to 10.7Mhz. Right now the biggest problem is I barely have enough IF and Log gain to calibrate the 'scope to 10db/CM. So, I would like to get more slop in the gain controls. I built a 15db feedback amp last night and plan to drop it in tonight. After that I will realign it all again Then order the new crystal for the tracking generator. I believe that crystal has to be dead on to make the narrow resolution filters work correctly. What kind of equipment do you have? It would boost my confidence in the SA (and myself) if I could have good commercial gear look at the critical parts and pronounce them to be sound. I don't have too much faith in the 10.7 Mhz monolythic filters I used in the resolution filter and that is a pretty critical spot. Wes took a look at my waveform and said I need to do a little more work. It would also be nice to be able to talk to someone who is already using the SA. I have talked to W7ZOI (wonderful man...can't say enough good stuff about him) quite a bit. But, I don't want to bother him too much. The only time comitment is two sessions of perhaps 15 minutes each. First, some background. I belong to the Hart House Amateur Radio Club, which is located at the University of Toronto. The club has been in existence for a goodly number of years; following a hiatus of a few years, we've been getting the club back on its feet for a few years now. This upcoming Monday, January 12, the club is holding one of its semi-annual open meetings to attract new members. Now, this time, we've decided that we're going to do more than just talk -- we want to hold a live demonstration of what this whole "amateur radio" thing is about. The plan is to move our main HF radio out of our shack (which is quite small) into the room where the meeting is going to be held. We will also string up (ahead of time) a dipole cut for 10m. At the conclusion of the presentations, we'd like to do a live demonstration of radio communications, and perhaps let the intersted students talk to a few people. So here's what I need help for: I would like to find a number of stations, preferably at increasing distances from Toronto, Canada, who will be able to listen on the specified frequency at the specified time (1845 EST (2345 UTC) on Jan. 12, 2004). We will announce our presence when we're on the air, and will ask for stations to let us know that they're hearing us. We can have a brief QSO with each station, and will then move farther and farther out from Toronto. If the propagation gods are good, I'd like to get a few thousand kilometers worth of distance... What I'd like to do is to do a test of this on the Saturday before (that's Jan. 10, 2004), at the same time (1845 EST/2345 UTC). This test makes sure we can set things up, that our signal gets out, and that people can hear us. If anyone is interested in helping us, or if there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask, here or by personal e-mail. Thanks to everyone in advance. -- Luke Stras VA3LNS "The meek can have the Earth; the rest of us have other plans" --Henry Spencer ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 20:19:46 -0600 From: "Doc K0EVZ" To: "qrp-l reflector" Cc: "doc k0evz earthlink" Subject: [164666] FOX Spots at 0215 Message-ID: <41200413721946807@earthlink.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Gang: Both FOXes are loud and clear in Albuquerque this evening. Message-ID: <3FFB7161.7090301@paonline.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit According to a friend who worked 35 years at RCA as a tube designer, the reason for metal tubes was improved heat dissipation. Metal cases were eventually abandoned in favor of glass due to the reduced cost of glass and because the reduced capacitance between the plate and the tube envelope improved electrical performance. Some examples of metal tubes gone to glass included power output tubes such as the 6V6 and 6L6, and the 5U4 dual rectifier. All of them started life as metal tubes. They were later converted to glass packages and given the suffix -GT. In some rare instances some tubes, such as the nuvistor, continued to be housed in metal cases because the case also served as an integral RF shield. Tubes have an interesting heritage. RCA-Lancaster had an extensive R&D capability for tubes and vacuum devices. In the early 1960s they knew that tubes, their main product, were on the way out. Consequently, they began looking for other products which used similar processes and knowledge but were applicable to new, growing markets. One product they investigated was called a heat pipe. They are now used in almost every laptop computer and in many high-end desktops and servers. It can be said, without much of a stretch, that these high-tech, leading-edge devices rely heavily on vacuum tube technology developed in the 1930s. Worked Mert with no problem last time he was Fox. And Texas ... heck, normally you can work Texas on 40 Meters from NJ by hooking a wet string up to your PL-259. So I come home from my K of C meeting a little late; but turn on the rig anticipating a twofer. I am met with crushing disappointment! I hear Mike barely; and I mean barely. He comes out of the noise to maybe a 329 at best! Hey, he's supposed to be in Texas! Mike, did you move for tonight? Hi! And Mert ... I never even heard Mert ... didn't even hear any of the hounds trying to work him! So I go from a twofer to a zippo (and I ain't talkin' lighters here). Oh well, I will complain; but shouldn't ... got the truffle and both foxii last week. This week, the big goose egg - once, just once, it would be nice to hear a fox 599 in New Jersey! The KISS is just that---a simple rig based on old fashioned, less-than-state-of-the-art circuits. Most of these have been published before in handbooks and tutorial articles. But, that doesn't detract from its usefulness in helping me learn about these circuits and how they work. Gosh, I could spend days just reading about how toroidal transformers are made and applied, for example. Likewise, tinkering with Multi-Sim for circuit simulation of well-known simple circuits taught me a lot about what that program and SPICE simulations can do---and what it can't do (also described in the section on the KISS rig's BFO). Even though I never delved deeply into SPICE, I have a better understanding and appreciation of it now. Choosing VFO parts to ensure low drift, and mounting parts on the chassis rather than on a circuit board, is yet another example of what you can learn at a practical melt-solder level. That was one of the primary goals of the undertaking to begin with! Have fun, and CU on the bands. It's supposed to be balanced to minimize radiation. You can improve the balance and limit the size of the radiating antenna if you put the telco provided low pass filter for the voice equipment at the telco demarcation point and run a single teisted pair from the telco side of this filter to your DSL box. I would do this before messing with a shield for the box or additional RF chokes on the phone line to the DSL box. If the DSL box adapts to additional choke by raising it's signal level, you could end up with more noise than you had before. If you still have problems after making sure your inside wiring is balanced and direct, suggest you narrow down source with a portable BCB RX. If one side of telco circuit has a poor connection the line will not be balanced and you'll get a lot of radiation from the telcos drop. -Bob On Wed, 31 Dec 2003, dave wrote: > I have a dsl modem and either it or the power supply makes for a bunch > of rf noise. I live in Austin and didn't hear Mike either. I listened all evening on both my long wire and my vert. Nada. Sometimes you can hear and work Dallas stations just fine on 40m in the evening. Not last night, unfortunately. When you're in the skip zone about all you can do is hope for a change. The consolation prize while listening for Mike was the bark of the Canadian hounds I rarely copy like VE5RC, VA6RF, and I think I even heard VE4WI too. A couple sixes like K6XR were decent copy in Austin too. Mother propagation can be fickle indeed. Looking over the prelim log. It all started out GREAT with a rate of one per minute but broke apart within about 45 minutes. Within the first ten contacts were Co, TX, AB, OK, TN and VA so it looked like a pretty good coverate except for the NE ad SE. Later got one in FL and and some in OR and WA. And then later got a few very fluttery sigs out of WI, MN and ND. Sorry that I couldn't put more of you into the log. Like at the end, I heard VE6EX but couln't copy his info. That latter method improves the former real well-especially when the experiment allows some smoke to get out!!! Being in the middle of a major HF, All-Band, Relay-Switched HF Multiple Bandpass Filter project, I can say the recommendation for the cores if you wanted to transmit through them (to 100W or so) was for size T-68 or even T-80. T-50 MIGHT work if all the component parameters were OK, but might not. I'm using T-50s and plan to simply bypass the unit on transmit. I know that leaves a LOT unsaid, but it should be a good guideline I think. I think the frustration from the poor 40m prop this season is starting to catch up with quite a few folks. There are several of us hounds who have had a couple of 0 for 2 Tuesdays and some frustration on the part of a FOX or two. The lousy conditions have really taken a lot of the fun out of Fox hunting for some listening to ESP sigs week after week. But hey, no one I know of has control over propagation and you're correct, next FOX season may be a totally different ballgame. Boy, do we ever hope that's the case. I try to look at the 80m suggestion in this way. Think of it as a way of putting a few more entries in the log and thus cutting down on some of the frustration that abounds. No doubt, there is some good propagation on that band right now. I rather liked the suggestion of one FOX starting out on 40 and the other one on 80. Then, after one hour, they both switch bands. I didn't hear a peep from Mert last night in MN but feel I possibly could have worked him on 80. The same could apply to your situation there on the West Coast. Perhaps you couldn't have worked an Arizona Fox on 40 but could work him OK on 80. Personally, I see nothing wrong in attempting to keep our QRP ops busy and having as much fun as possible. A noble cause I would think. And that's what I feel the 80m suggestion was intended to do (not to disfranchise either coast). Is it too late in the FOX season to incorporate the 80m proposal with 9 more hunts listed?? That's a decision for the FOX Committee. Quite frankly, I don't know if it's even under consideration. I just know we'll continue to hunt for the rest of this season regardless and look forward to a better 40m hunting in late October (hopefully). YMMV Now, if you'll excuse me, I have another batch to brew at the moonshine still and watch for Revenuers. :-) 72, Gary -K8KFJ- West Virginia __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! No problem at 30 wpm. Perfect for my use since I'm at more like 20 wpm. For paddle spacing, try mounting only one guitar pick inside of the paddle. The spacing then matches my Schurrs (center to center) Look strange? I prefer to think unique. After all... My bushings do not fit tight into the paddle arms as described in the manual. This is a critical fit. I'm considering a carefully applied drop of glue. I realize that the function of glue is not to fill a gap but it should be fine in this instance. Any thoughts? I only going to solder a ground wire to one of the paddles. The spring connects the two arms. I have been using the cores exclusively in my linearised mixers and small signal amplifiers, but when it came to using them with power amplifiers of 5W and above, I ran head-on into the problem of leakage inductance. Has to do with the amount of wire that is outside the core at the ends. Part of the solution came down to using the longest core I could accomodate so that most of the wire was inside the core. As I used longer cores, the maximum usable frequency of the transformer increased, and adding the matching capacitors increased it further by as much as 20%. This helped to a wide degree, but was not the final solution. The final solution was to use semflex cable, which is the cable where the outer braid is filled with solder. This cable can be bent into a "U" that will fit into the Fair-Rite 1502, 0302, 0102, 0202, and 6802 cores (0.525" wide)without kinking or splitting the outer braid. Choosing the cross-sectional area of the core to accomodate the power level is a bit of a pain. I've resorted to making a transformer and then cranking up the power until I see the third harmonic rise nonlinearly on a spectrum analyzer. That's when I know that I've reached the saturation point on the B-H curve, and then I back off on the power by 50% for applying that core. The cores that I mentioned earlier are suitable for power levels up to 2W when made with type 43 or 61 material. Chris ,----------------------. Funny thing is that ALL of the upper HF bands (40 and above) seem to be suffering from the same lul in propagation. There are days when they seem to work as expected, but more than often lately they don't. When the bands are like they are right now, I just tend to spend more time working on projects and less time on the air, although I usually have the rig turned on to listen for a CQ. One thing that might be interesting is for someone to put up an 80 Meter beacon for a night and get some reports including UTC Time, RST, and QTH to see how the band is doing. I've had a few QSO's on 80, but typically late in the evening when the band is open. Some 80 Meter activity would be fun, but I really don't think that moving the FOX Hunts to 80 is a viable solution. I think that the band will sort itself out before too long and until then, the FOX Logs will be a bit smaller. Speaking of goose egg nights, I've had 2 of them now, but then again I didn't get started with the Hunts until late this year as I was in the middle of a move. I am finding the hunts a lot more challenging than last year, and from that point of view more fun. If you would like to comment please send them to your OWN.... ARRL Sections. TNX Hal for the info *********** Folks, The ARRL Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for January 15. Yes, I know that is next week. However, unbeknownst to me until yesterday, I have been advised that the Board is going to discuss the licensing requirements with the code/no code issue at this meeting. Some ARRL Directors have requested comments and input from their members on this controversial issue. Apparently some have not. I just found about this from the Section Manager e-mail reflector and now know that many of the Sections have been e-mailing their respective Directors with comments on the topic. I realize the timeframe is tight if any of you have an interest, one way or the other. And please don't ask me what the Board's plans may or may not be relative to CW requirements or what the timeline is on any possible future action. I have not been advised. I simply want to notify you as an ARRL member that the Board plans to weigh-in on this issue at the meeting next week. And so I want to let you know that if you have an opinion on this issue, again one way or another, you should consider sending your comments to our Roanoke Division Director Dennis Bodson, W4PWF. Dennis can be e-mailed at w4pwf@arrl.org I would also ask if you do submit your comments to Dennis, please copy me on them at kc8fs@arrl.org I can assure you I will keep your comments/opinions confidential but will consider a general summary of the responses. If on the other hand, you wish to make your comments known publicly, you may post them on the wvarrl usergroup on Yahoo per the guidelines/rules of this group. The problem might be interference with CW nets. I've looked through my ARRL Net Directory and did a Google search for CW Nets on 3725 kHz. Didn't find any. Would that be as good a choice as any for a test beacon? This is going to sound off-the-wall, but I don't think it is really all that off-point. No matter if it's a straight key, a bug, or paddles: sending CW has much in common with playing a keyboard instrument. Over the last several decades a lot has come to light concerning the hand, arm, and back problems that keyboard players tend to develop. The long and short of it is, effective use of your hand and fingers for fine motor control over long periods of time depends critically on correct posture and use of the larger muscles of the arm and back. A lot of what is traditionally taught is just wrong from that point of view. The impetus for much of the investigation into this subject was the odd fact that very, very few jazz piano players have hand problems, and they can play all day and all night long without fatigue. Not so with classically-trained pianists. Evidently there's something about classical technique that brings this on, because jazz players mostly don't have the problems, but they nevertheless cede nothing to the classical players in the way of virtuosity. The upshot is that most modern piano technique incorporates a lot more from the great jazz players. In particular, the insistence that fingers be kept curved, and that they be trained to act like equalized little pistons, has gone out the window for the most part. Much more emphasis is placed on using larger muscles, rotation of the forearm and upper arm, and the weight of the arm. You have to suspect that similar things hold concerning CW sending. I wonder whether anybody has actually done a comprehensive study of how the real CW whizzes play their instruments. In case anybody is interested, there's lots of suggestive information about this subject on the web. Google on "Abbey Whiteside" or "Dorothy Taubman" for more. 73 Frank AB2KT ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2004 23:50:17 +0100 From: WJuergens@t-online.de (Wolf-Ruediger Juergens) To: , "Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion" Subject: [164753] Re: 80 Meter Beacon Message-ID: <050601c3d570$9f0feba0$0100a8c0@homepc> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Chuck Carpenter wrote: > I'd like to run a beacon for a few nights. Would be nice to hear about the schedule. 72 Wolf, DL2WRJ -- http://www.dl2wrj.de - CW - Hellschreiber - QRP - QRPP - QRSS ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jan 2004 18:12:25 -0500 From: Alex To: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [164754] Re: Last week to Order a QRP Contest Calendar by Mail Message-ID: <3FFC9259.679C7D98@amsat.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi there, These are great calendars. It really is very nice to look at all the pictures of homebrewed equipment. I also never realized how many QRP contesting opportunities there were until I received this calendar. Excellent information and fun to look at. I've considered purchasing a ham calendar from a major publisher, but really, when I looked at some of the pictures I seriously wondered why anyone would want to have pictures of ugly old guys on the wall of his or her shack. :-) 73, --Alex KR1ST http://www.kr1st.com Ron Polityka wrote: > > Hi, > > This is the last week you can order by mail the 2004 QRP Contest Calendar. > > Check out www.n3epa.org for more details. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jan 2004 15:15:41 -0800 From: Stephen Wandling To: jason@recursiv.com Cc: Low Power Amateur Radio Discussion Subject: [164755] Re: HamBug Message-ID: <3FFC931D.5040800@SwiftsureConsulting.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Jason, I wanted to check out your beta, but I can't install.
