And, like most of us, I've been around the block once or twice, and as far as I know, have never been dropped on my head. But I have NEVER seen a SP3T or a DP3T that WASN'T "off" in the middle position. Maybe someone makes some such thing, I don't know. My head may be full of snow and ice by now. They're fairly rare, but exist. I have a few here that I'm using for mike control. 1 4 2 5 3 6 up- 2 and 3, 5 and 6 connected center 2 and 3, 4 and 5 connected down- 1 and 2, 4 and 5 connected I DO know that in my part of the world, we call an ON-ON-ON 3T switch "A 3-position Selector Switch," and it's usually found in the rotary variety. These are everywhere. Perhaps even at Radio Shack. Use them. They work. Toggle switches take less front panel space to operate, and sometime are more mnemonic. Is my case, it's "mike off, mike on, mike on and PTT". It's MUCH easier to handle than two switches, or a rotary switch. But, you know, there are stranger things in the world, so for all I know there exists a 12-position DP toggle switch. Barry, good luck, bud. If you find your switch, please let us know. Here in southern NM all three stations were strong and heard my rousing 5 watts to a vertical. I tried for ET but he was working guys to the east and never heard me. I couldn't leave the antenna up between tests, so came up with a way to quickly deploy & retrieve the twelve 20' radials I was using. I soldered them all to a spade connector on one end, then tied each one to a nail on the other end. I made a holder out of a 6" x 8" piece of what I think is called corrugated PVC (stuff that is built like corrugated cardboard but is plastic), stuck the nails into the holes on one end, then wound up the radials. To deploy them, I hook the connector to the base of the antenna, then back up while unwinding them. When I have them stretched out, I pull out the first nail, and stick it in the ground, then walk around the perimeter of the antenna, uniformly placing the radials. The process takes less than two minutes. I take them in by doing everything in reverse, and as long as I do everything exactly the same, forward & backwards, I don't have any tangles and it's a fast & smooth procedure. To make it more portable, I'm trying to reduce the size of the assembly so that it fits in a shirt pocket. I'm using a smaller holder and thinner, Teflon-insulated wire, but so far the assembly isn't as trouble-free as I'd like, with the radials sometimes getting tangled. Does anybody have any good ideas they'd like to share as to how they store and deploy radials? I'm wondering if after I get this system perfected, someone will point out a better and faster way! I have been very busy with my son's upcoming wedding and finally got some free time to play. I got them finished finally this afternoon after putting on several coats of lacquer. I put it together in the kitchen so I would have plenty of room. In addition, the floor is white and clean. Little did I know that might be a problem. I got to the last step putting in the spring and got it in just fine. Then, when I realized I had to take it out again, to readjust the paddle arms I lost the spring. It shot into the vent in the floor as best I can figure and is lost for the time being. After hunting on the floor for about 1/2 an hour and feeling really dumb, I decided to be a good marine and adapt, overcome, and improvise. Oh, well, rather than run to the store I decided to be inventive, and did. I went upstairs and got into my stash of ballpoint pens and took several apart and found just what I wanted. Springs! I cut one to what I thought would be the right length and low and behold that is the new resident spring in my new set of paddles. "Viagra special" spring. Since I get them free from the drug reps all the time, I have a surplus of them. I used a little different cord for the connection to the radio and put it on the Sierra and tried her out. I made contact with KB4WKH in Tennessee and slowed down for him as he was on a J38 handkey. We had a long qso and I got to put my first qso with the new paddles in the book. Now I am looking forward to operating with it for the remainder of the week and on Saturday to see if it will stand the test of cold in the FYBO contest. The paddles work very well and I wish to thank all who participated in making the paddles. They are truly a work or art for the price. If I could just get them adjusted right; then, I will be very much satisfied. It was like new but it had the same type of ac jack. Rather than try to locate the rare HP plug, I decided to replace the ac jack. If you have an old power supply from a computer, you can remove the ac jack from it. Drill out the rivets that hold the HP jack in the meter. Use a ADEL nibbler to size the hole to mount the new ac jack. mount the jack with screws and reattach the transformer primary wires. Now I use a standard ac cord that is used on computers. About 115 had my name on 'em, too. Conditions were great for the first 50 minutes or so, but then the usual 40M blahs settled in-- could actually hear the noise level rising and falling as the band tried to go long. But as predicted, it couldn't make up its mind one way or the other and there were brief periods of good propagation to most of the country. More than once I would dig out an S2-3 signal only to have him come back at S5-7 with his exchange. And a couple of times a signal faded in or out that much during the course of the exchange! Very fortunate to be in a postion to give a couple of guys their first pelt. One I won't mention by name because I'm not positive it was his first, but the second was with Dale, N0XAS, at literally the last gasp. The logged contact time is when the QSO starts, which happened to be about 10 seconds before the end. Dale told me he wasn't in the hunt, but wanted to say hello. I treated it as an ordinary QSO, sent my info, got the same in return, and then had a nice little chat. When I told him he was in the log, he thanked me for his first pelt and said he might even try again. Sure hope he does. Pleasant and fitting end to the evening's entertainment. I've built a small TXR for 40M. RX and TX both seem to work fine, until I've messed with the transmit/receive changeover that is. RX front end is a conventional NE612, both inputs are fed from the secondary winding of the second bandpass filter inductor. TX side again nothing unique. NPN to a simple 3 pole low pass filter. The antenna feed for RX is tapped of the start of the LPF -after- the 100n cap from, i.e. juction of 470pf to gnd and 1.2 uH torroid. it goes via a series tuned changeover circuit, 50pf and 10uH choke to input of RX BPF (with series back to back diodes in between) I've used a 120pf trimmer at moment just to set it up. This is totally convetional and these values are even used in solid state design/and Experimental Methods... But I noticed straight away that when switching the antenna input betweeen the ant end of the low pass filter and directly to input of RX BPF there was noticeable signal loss. Hmmm...I've used this before with zero signal loss. Whats more if I feed the antenna in at the start of the capacitor/inductor changeover the signals dramatically weaker still. In other words it seems to need the LPF somewhat. I tried adjusting the trimmer and straight away came the the conclusion that the changeover and maybe LPF is detuning the RX BPF. In fact if I break the connection between the LPF and changeover and connect antenna to RX input I can still peak the signal using the changeover trimmer. OK changeover is affecting the RX BPF, that sort of makes sense. However the one thing I can't do is with the antenna coming into the LPF is adjust the trimmer for zero insertion loss. Have I explained this adaqutely? probably too much maybe!. But can someone might be happening here? I've this before on a earlier rig and zerp problems! RESPONSE: Theoretically you need to change them for each band. I have run speaker wire with one wire cut for 40 and one 20m and 15 worked fine with the 40m ones. Once you elevate them you get into resonance and on the ground all that goes out the window. Now if you had a 33ft mast with 33ft radials you can get by with one set for 40, 20, and 15m. Reason is on 20m you have a 1/2wl antenna and the radials play a small role and losses are low and the 15m works off the 40m radials. Where you get into a problem is with non resonant verticals used multiband and then you have to deal with resonant radials if elevated. Resonance is not really a simple matter of 234/f. The closer you are to the ground the coupling has a noticeable affect on resonance. Much like a dipole. I have been thinking about verticals and radials lately. I came to a profound discovery, very basic, but just never thought of it this way. A quarter wavelength of wire in space has a feed impedance of 35 ohms. The supporting ideas that allowed me to figure this out, is the textbook impedance of a matched 1/4 wave vertical, 35 ohms, and multiplied by two, the textbook impedance of a dipole 70 ohms. So each free space radial must have an impedance of 35 ohms. With one radial, the antenna is probably just a funny shaped dipole and will have a funny shaped radiation pattern. Maximum radiation going up in the direction of the one radial. Four radials will have a ground impedance of 35 / 4 or 8.75 ohms. Looking better. The impedance of a 1/2 wavelength of wire is quite high, therefore, not a very good ground source. All above assume above ground radials. Yes, ground radials just don't apply and they are more of capacitive coupling to ground. My test antenna is at http://kn5l.net/fdantenna/ I have found the Butternut ground system tech note http://www.bencher.com/pdfs/00361ZZV.pdf to be quite informative. The interesting point about multiband verticals and radials is that on 80 meters, the other radials provide enough capacitive coupling to ground. I have found that for 80 40 20 15 10, the above ground radials needed are 40, 20, and 10, the 40 meter radials work as 3/4 wave tuned on 15. On my Field Day vertical page, referenced above, there is a picture of a Butternut with the aforementioned radial configuration. If you have access to a modelling program, it'll be illuminating to inject a signal at the antenna terminal and examine signal levels through the filter. I've 'been there'- modelling confirming the high losses I was seeing. We had horrendous QRM for about the first 40 minutes but it was the best spot I could find. The hounds did a great job of staying clear of the QRM as best they could. I know it was a little hard to figure out where I was listening at times. The less than ideal conditions had me pretty rattled but John Burnley, NU0V coached me through it and before long my panic attack was at manageable levels. I apologize for the callsigns I murdered and for asking for fills on stuff I should have just known. The rough count looks like a little over 80 Pelts with 59 of those in the first hour. A few QRO stations stopped by but they had the exchange figured out so they fit in nicely. Highlights included working WP4KGR from Puerto Rico running 5 watts and the FB 150mw signal from W9JOP in VA. Thanks to all who participated. You were patient and a great bunch of operators. Thanks also to NU0V who again did the logging, and managed damage control. One more thanks goes to the hound with a big signal who stayed around the entire hunt and helped keep the frequency clear by answering the QRL?s and CQs and asking those stations to QSY. That made a big difference. Yep, we all forget to hit the split button once in a while in the heat of battle. I believe there is also some confusion on the part of hounds as to whether the Fox is working split or simplex (especially near the end of the hunt). This is where I believe the FOXes can help out Karl. If the Fox is operating split then send "UP" after each contact. Once on the way to the moon and while at the moon they used S-band (2gHz) way up in the microwave band. Ground control tracked the moon with large dishes. When on the lunar surface the astronauts used a vhf link back to the lander which rebroadcast on S-band back to earth. It was most interesting listening to the ~ 2 second delay between controllers asking a question and waiting for responses. They often found themselves talking over each other. Many VHF 'rs with big dishes were able to track the lunar module on it's way to the moon (via UHF beacon onboard). I believe only one VHF'r (Paul, W4HKK, I think) actually made some recordings from the surface, I think of the VHF link back to the module. It was all very exciting stuff and signals were always very strong. Well, that would be ok, except - speaking as a sometimes Fox and usual Hound, Many, if not most, Foxii get into a nice rhythm, if the conditions allow, which does not include anything between the end of most exchanges and the beginning of the Pack baying except a "TU," or "dit dit." When I hear a Fox end each exchange with, "QSL DE AB1CDE FOX UP," I find myself thinking how many more pelts might be distributed if all that were eliminated. That portion of copy, sent repeatedly over the course of a hunt, could shorten the Fox's effective operating time by 10-15 minutes. What I think works better is if the Fox uses a similar ending to each, such as "TU," or even their call, so that the Hounds know what signals the end. I suppose sending only "UP" would work, but shouldn't really always be necessary. And certainly, it's appropriate for the Fox to ID at least once every ten minutes or less. As for the issue that began this thread, inadvertent QRM by Hounds, it's one of the "problems" that is the real focus and benefit of the Hunts, second to fun, of course: learning to work a split-freq pile. Each Hound should know that the FOX will usually be working split as long as possible - since it would be a sorry mess otherwise - and will announce that fact, each week, on this reflector, prior to the Hunt. Each Hound, then, should always carefully listen to what's going on before jumping in: I think it would be rare to be able to hear the Fox and not hear any Hounds, so listen to at least one exchange before deciding where to transmit. That way, you'll know what's going on. Last night, Marshall was doing this lovely, predictable moving up and down to pick out a clear call on the edge of the Pack - an essential Fox skill. I listened to a few, noting the location of several Hounds in a row. Then, while he was working someone at the high end of the range, I put my VFO at the low end. As soon as they were done, I sent my call and BAM! Pelt city. Then I moved down to Jerry, and heard him having an exchange that was, to my surprise, simplex. This was at 0206. So I sent my call next, on-freq, and BAM. A bit later, I checked, and he was into a split-freq run. Go figure...but if you listen first, you can seem smart - and hang those peltii on the wall of the shed, where the xyl doesn't have to see them all the time. I checked the frequency against WWV and it's close enough I can't tell the difference by ear, so it really looks like I've cabbaged onto something really nice in the test equipment department. But I do sometimes mix it up a bit, for a reason that might be all that obvious! This late in the season, the foxes and hounds have largely got used to each other, and there's been a lot of skill-building going on. The pack noticeably more "disciplined" and the fox more efficient than in the first few hunts as the hounds have either worked out what's going to work for them, or (sadly) dropped out of the hunts from frustration. But as I found last night, the hounds have almost become TOO good. If end every QSO with "TU" for five minutes or so, the entire pack of hounds will start transmitting at the same time, but if I send R TU 72 the ones who are actually listening [g] will delay their call and therefore stand out from the others. Similarly, its surprising how you can change your listening frequency, make a Q, and then have a dozen guys calling you RIGHT THERE. And as Lloyd says later, a lot of hounds can figure out a pattern, such as working stations 200Hz higher each time. i don't know how other foxes do that, but I tend to manage it by ear-- I'll listen for a pitch that is high or low enough to stand out, then adjust the VFO when the guy's sending his exchange. But when it becomes apparent that a whole bunch of hounds have figured out my "pattern" I'll throw a random jump in there-- last night even worked a guy who was sending DOWN because I overshot my target and heard him clearly. He was real lucky, because ordinarily I can't hear anything lower than about 300Hz above my transmit freq. So for me, the essence of pileup management is to get the pack to move in ways I can anticipate, so I can pick a signal off the edge of it. And playing with the timing (the length of a confirmation) can be a big help. The only rule I try to apply to my listening frequency is to avoid answering a guy who is within about 200 Hz of my sending spot because if I do a bunch of guys will start calling there (or closer). But to get back to the original question, which was how you can tell when a Fox has abandoned working split and listing zero-beat, it's only going to be difficult when few stations are calling, and you can't hear the guy that the fox is working. But there's a dead giveaway-- if you hear the fox call CQ FOX twice or three times in a row without working anybody, you can be pretty sure the pile-up has disappeared and the fox will be working a lot closer to zero- beat if not right on it. There's one last technique I used last night that might be of interest, if less than obvious. Periodically during first madhouse half hour, I would switch to the GAP vertical antenna and/or punch in the anntenuator to filter out all but the strongest third or so of the signals. And sometimes I'll make an educated guess, too-- that's how you got YOUR pelt last night, Tom-- I heard what could have been a 1 and a definite TP and sounded "right" for Tom so I sent N1TP and there you were. I could have sent TP? but would you have heard it? Maybe not. Which reminds me, I get the impression that guys are indeed listening more carefully-- several times if I wasn't 100% sure of a call, I'd send a ? after it both times and sure enough the hound would include his callsign in the exchange, either correcting or confirming what I'd sent. I don't know where I bought a sheet of it from, but I notice many outdoor signs, such as garage sale signs, and temporary outdoor signs at fast food restaurants are made from it. With this political season coming, surely many of those signs will also be made from it. If you see any Democratic signs made from it, maybe you should snatch up one or two. Not only would you be getting some free corrugated plastic, you'd be doing a public service at the same time! :-) By the way, I think my problem of sometimes-tangled radials was because I was testing them by deploying them in my garage, out of the freezing temperatures, and couldn't spread them out like they actually would be. Today, I tried deploying them and taking them in, outside in the snow, attached to a screwdriver pounded into the ground, and they appear to work very well, so my "Two-Minute Pocket Radials" project is probably finished. If anyone tries to duplicate them from my brief description, I'd better mention that it's important to put a few layers of duct tape over the holes, then poke the nails through it, so there's some resistance to them falling out when you don't want them to. Also, in tying the wire to the tops of the nails, I used 2-1/2" finishing nails, then put a small drop of epoxy on the knot to secure it. The holder is 6" x 3-1/8" (16-holes) with a 3/4" x 2-1/8" (12-hole) notch cut out of the top and bottom. An arrow drawn on one corner of it, shows me how to hold it the same way every time, so the radials don't get twisted. I measured the FT-817 I have used for almost 2 years now. I tested it with the preamp ON, AGC OFF, and with the 500 Hz collins mechanical filter IN. The noise with no input was 0.2 volts RMS measured at the earphone jack. So N=0.2 The signal plus noise with a 1 micovolt signal was 3.8 volts RMS. So S+N=3.8 The ratio of S+N over N is called R. And R=19. To put R into the proper units of DB, I took the log of R and multiplied it by 20 since we are using voltage and want a power number. This number is 20 times 1.278 = 25.6 DB. Since a 1 micovolt input is a known -107 DB down, we get the noise value to be -107 -25.6 = -132.6 DB. This is the minimum detectable signal level and it's measured a different way when a radio is evaluated by the ARRL, but they got almost the same value, -133 DB. I measured my Kenwood TS-50 and got N=0.15 S+N=4.6 and that results in a minimum detectable signal of -136.7 DB. This number is somewhat suspect because there is no way to turn the AGC off on this radio. All things considered I know a little more about my radios now. By the way, a 1 microvolt signal into both radios is a LOUD signal. Marshall explains how he, an experienced and accomplished FOX, can more readily pick out 1 call sign from the pack "at the edges." Sometimes the pack of hounds is so "thick" that the only way to pick out 1 call sign is listeniong at one edge of the pack - usually - it seems - "up." Incidently, if I hear the FOX transmit only "TP" I immediatly reply with "N1TP?" Marshall, as usual - an excellent outing as da FOX. I'm looking forward to reading your pre-log.
