Hello, and since this thread is digressing a bit to VCR nostalgia I will add that of the VCRs that I have purchased over the years the best built (heavy metal case) and most reliable was a 1985 RCA SectaVision model that was also 35-channel cable-ready. Had a large footprint but the big circuit boards and easily accessible mechanical components facilitated servicing. Cost was around $500 IIRC. Good morning, and thank you for your thoughtful care of the unit. It has been heavily modified, removing the entire transmitter section. This will greatly reduce its potential sale price. However, this is a "bad news/good news" situation. Strapped to the bottom of the unit is a home-brew battery box connected to a TBY vibrator power supply. These power supplies are prized by collectors- I'd certainly bid on it. It will make the winning bidder happy. As a long-time ebay seller, I suggest separating the radio from the power supply. List them under "Militaria, WWII,U.S.,Field Gear,Other Field Gear." Be sure to mention "WWII Marine Corps Radio" somewhere in your description. Put them both up with good photos and descriptions and start the bidding at $1 (yep). Don't worry; it won't stay at $1, although you won't see the "big bids" until the very last seconds of the auction. The radio, less supply, will likely go somewhere between $40-$60 (the handset with it will make it more interesting; I would bid just to get the handset). The vibrator power supply and battery box will likely go between $80-$100. If you keep them together, about $80-$110. Another way to look at it: if you seperate them, you're going to make two collectors happy instead of just one. These are just estimates, of course; Ebay prices are notoriously fickle. But they're "experienced" estimates. Good luck, and thanks for offering them. Kindly, David S. Article: 318407 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Pete_O" Subject: Re: YOW! The cabinet was a mess (lots of water damage), the chassis had been a mouse den for years, the wiring was all shot, the speaker missing, etc. I saved the dial, escutcheon, knobs, buttons, tubes, grille, etc., the rest went to the curb. The 11-tube radio is in the December 1946 Sam's Photofact number 10-31. The band coverage is AM 540-1620KC, SW 8.8-10.2MC, FM 42-50MC and 88-108MC. I suspect the dial numbers are the old channel allocation numbers. The chassis used a glass 5U4 and a pair of 6V6's, the rest were all Cunningham metal tubes. jim menning Article: 318409 of rec.antiques.radio+phono Subject: Re: OK all aboard for LANSING! I had to put a stop payment on my bank account. I was able to talk with a "real" person at Paypal ONCE and he told me I'm doing everything right. I have been totally unable to contact the seller, and have made a claim. I'm told the claim may take up to 30 days to process. I received an automated e-mail stating my Paypal accound has been suspended. It shows a case number, with a message "awaiting your response." I cannot find the response they're waiting for, have NOT received any e-mails other than the automated type, and I STILL have no idea whether I'll actually get the items I bid for. This is absolutely amazing, if not insane. I'm frozen, and about to go out of business. Meanwhile the seller is still selling . . .and if I could get so much as a phone call, this could all be resolved immediately. -- Gary E. The number of unreadble newsgroup posts seems to be going up. The worst offenders often rant that its your fault if you don't understand what they post. Then there are websites so bad that they are a complete waste of time. Tools like Front Page allow anyone who can copy and paste to build a crappy website. Florida has been working to improve the situation but they say that it will be six more years before the first class makes it all the way through the tighter standards. The kids don't like it, but if they don't pass their tests, or pass on a second attempt, they fail. -- http://home.earthlink.net/~computersforvets/ Michael A. All he has to do is to file a standard two page realease Form 180, but he refuses. What does he have to hide? Senator Kerry will not disclose the records leading to the award of the three purple hearts, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. There are also missing performance evaluations/Fitness Reports for certain periods of his service. It goes without saying that the liberal media isn't clamoring for him to comply although they hounded President George Bush relentlessly to release his Air National Guard records. Bush, by the way, did the right thing - he signed his Form 180. But those aren't the important lies. As a leader of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), Kerry testified before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on April 22, 1971, telling the Senators and a national audience that American troops "...had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam..." and accused the U.S. military of committing war crimes "on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command." Kerry's charges were based on a VVAW conference called the "Winter Soldier Investigation" -- a leftist propaganda event funded primarily by Jane Fonda. None of the Winter Soldier "witnesses" Kerry cited were willing to sign affadavits, and their gruesome stories lacked the names, dates and places that would allow their claims to be tested. Few were willing to cooperate with military investigators. The Naval Investigative Service found that several of the veterans said to have given statements at Winter Soldier were in fact imposters using the name of real veterans. False testimony and exaggerations were primary characteristics of the war crimes disinformation campaign, and also of the VVAW itself. Executive Secretary Al Hubbard, for example, claimed to have been an Air Force Captain wounded in Vietnam piloting a transport plane. In fact, Hubbard had been a staff sergeant who was not a pilot and who was never assigned to Vietnam. John Kerry and the VVAW worked closely with America's wartime enemies, arranged multiple meetings with the North Vietnamese and Vietcong leadership, and consistently supported their positions. Kerry and his radical comrades also played a key role in defining the false, damaging image of Vietnam veterans as psychologically disabled alcoholics and addicts, haunted by the crimes they had been forced to commit in a "racist" war. Detailed information about the anti-war activities of John Kerry and the VVAW can be found at WinterSoldier.com. >For that matter, who are you to question Mr. >Kerry's waar record? Were you there? Fortunately, this brave soldier pulled out of that crisis with one of those tiny round bandages and some sympathy. What he DID have to hide was his college record, which showed he got some pretty crumby grades when compared to Bush. Yup, the same Bush whom the Left and the media had spent millions of dollars and much time in showing how he wasn't as smart as Kerry, apparently wiped the floor with him when it came to getting good grades in school. This is why he was too scared to show his military records, despite trying to sieze power of this country by riding on the backs of real war heroes. I snipped the obvious stuff, because rather than showing malice towards soldiers, Kerry was simply bending with the wind, or in other words, he thought public opinion was, at the time, against soldiers, and he wanted to go with the flow. This is a fact that Kerry himself has proven time and again by flip/flopping on every issue, instead of standing his ground. This is, of course, why the US military won't vote for him, or any other Democrat that's currently in the spotlight. They know full well that Democrats will jump and shout in support for you, as long as it's in their best interest. They'll take a stinky dump on you when it's not. Soldiers like to know that at least some politicians are on their side. > Detailed information about the anti-war activities of John Kerry > and the VVAW can be found at WinterSoldier.com. > > >For that matter, who are you to question Mr. > >Kerry's waar record? Despite what Democrats claim, that is to support different races and seek opinions from other countries, they are by far the most racist and facist people in the world, and the last thing they need is some guy from another country badmouthing their failure of a candidate. They only want to hear you agree with them. This is true, even when they're talking to a soldier of India, who's basically on the same side as the US. > I have an > interest in these lies simply because rude people keep filling all > of the Internet with talk about them, not caring whether anyone > wants to hear it. This sounds like a classic example of the AGC cap opening up.Verify that you changed, this, and if so, verify your solder connections -- and make sure you connected it to the right eyelet on the terminal strip. Clip lead another cap on the AGC, and see what happens. Can't hurt. These look like ordinary wax capacitors. But looking at the tube lineup in your post, this looks to be a power transformer powered set and not a hot chassis design. The LC trap circuits were usually found in hot chassis sets where the line was connected not to the chassis itself but to a B- bus that was bypassed to the chassis. The LC trap was to make the bypass have very low impedance at the IF frequency but a high impedance at 60Hz. As others mentioned, check for shields being properly grounded. The object is to reduce the amount of amplified IF signal finding its way back into the input side of the IF stage. Or reduce the gain of the IF stage. Check to see if it's a metal tube that's called for, and that its shield is grounded. Article: 318469 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: oldcoot@webtv.net (Bill Sheppard) Subject: Re: Birdies...oh my! It's much more agressive than the rosin flux in the solder so it will usually do the job. The first few times I did this I worried that this flux would cause corrosion later on, but that hasn't happened to me yet, although I do try to wipe as much of it off afterwards as possible. The second solution is to just dip the part in a small bit of Muriatic (industrial grade hydrochloric) acid. This will clean off the part and it evaporates completely. Why would you do that? Because even the most simple-minded person would know those things are bad without anyone having to explain it to them. If you don't understand why you're in serious need of professional help. It's also hard to believe any sane person would ask such a question, but here's the short answer. First off, Bush was wrong about his reason for starting the war in the first place. You can make all the excuses you want, but the bottom line is when you're wrong you have made an error. When you make an error there is a penalty, even if your name is Bush. The U.K. found out today why it was an error to sign on to a war based on aggression and not self defense. So the war was started in error, and when one starts off with an incorrect premise everything that follows is also wrong. Second, everyone, even the most die-hard conservative knows that Bush is sending us into a tremendous debt with his incompetence in fiscal affairs, which any responsible person knows is also a mistake. And last, a lot of people said it was impeachable for a president to lie in court about his sex life. By that line of reasoning it follows that if a president lies to get his country into a war with the accompanying loss of thousands of lives and immense casualties, then that surely is a cause for impeachment. You can't have it both ways. If lying about sex is an impeachable offense then surely lying about invading another country is too. That's why those things are bad, but something tells me that no amount of explanation will be sufficient for you to comprehend it. Being that there are none so blind as those who will not see. In the last election almost 57 million voters cast their votes for the Democratic candidate, and I'll guarantee you that a lot more Kerry voters stayed home than Bush voters did. So don't be so sure that you speak for what Americans want. Nearly half of them wanted Bush to go home, and that doesn't mean they are out of touch with reality, it means they don't like where Bush is taking the country. What about them? You aren't taking into account what nearly 50% of the population wants. That's what I call arrogance, thinking that because you have half the people on your side you have everyone. You don't, and neither does Bush. Hawke Article: 318498 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Pagan" Subject: Re: thanks, George! Personally, I feel the war started with the USS Cole, the Embassy bombings, the numerous plane highjackings and bombings, and so forth, for the past 40 friggin years. I, for one, am sick of Americans getting blown up for the sake of a bunch of wackos in the Middle East. > Second, everyone, even the most die-hard conservative knows that Bush is > sending us into a tremendous debt with his incompetence in fiscal affairs, > which any responsible person knows is also a mistake. That would mean not only Bush, but Congress (back when it was controlled by Democrats), as well as Clinton, nearly all of whom threw their full support behind Bush and the second Iraq invasion, which, by the way, was also due to Iraqi forces targeting and shooting at our aircraft, training terrorists, and so forth. > That's why those things are bad, but something tells me that no amount of > explanation will be sufficient for you to comprehend it. Of course, it wouldn't help if you actually provided one. All it would prove is that Kerry voters are a bunch of slugs who are too lazy to get up off their asses and vote. Most likely, since Bush won by even more votes on his reelection than the first election, it's been solidly proven that once most of the Left gets a taste of real leadership, they hesitate to go back to lying bullshitters who are just out to grab power. > So don't be so sure that you speak for > what Americans want. I had this problem on a Hallicrafters tabletop set that I replaced an IF can on....The symptoms were EXACTLY as you describe. reversing the primary leads of the 1st IF can that I replaced cured the problem (I found I could also get rid of it by detuning the IFs, but at the expense of a LOT of gain). -Scott Article: 318501 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Rick" References: <11cpij4qan8h62d@corp.supernews.com> <2tmpc1hbgjoj2roqetg5u1vgvpt7cn2ill@4ax.com> <11cruveidsg4rba@corp.supernews.com> <11cs1j4pqv57a42@corp.supernews.com> Subject: Re: thanks, George! Another way to tame things in to increase the cathode resistor of the IF amp tube (this reduces its gain). Or try connecting a resistor across the primary of the IF transformer that is fed by the plate of the IF amp tube (cuts the gain and widens the IF response). But try the slight mistuning of the IF transformers first, easy to do and requires no extra parts or soldering. Manufacturers sometimes did this as well. This assumes that you checked that all shielding is present and grounded. Check that any shielding on the wires leading to any tube top caps are in fact grounded. And, if you want a shock, price that same air-cleaner box > for your Chevy, and see how long you have to wait for it. Peter, I am gonna have to call you on this one....Your contention that the prices for car parts on an item-for-item basis are no less costly between foreign and domestic makes MIGHT work for SOME Japanese car parts, but in no way reflects reality for European parts. Unless you are talking about the most mundane parts, the difference can be, and often is, huge. I have repaired many vehicles for friends over the years as well as my own, and there have been more times than I care to remember when $1000.00 wasn't enough for some part for a Benz or Bimmer. (Ever spent $1500.00 of someone else's money for a sideview mirror? I have. How 'bout $800.00 for a set of plug wires? I've done that, too). The domestic parts are seldom more than about $500.00 per unit for anything unless you are trying to find some of the electronic parts. The difference is partly due to the existence of an aftermarket. Benzes are incredibly popular around here (Northern California), but they still represent only a tiny fraction of the cars on the road. Thus, there are far fewer recycled parts available for them, and it takes way longer for reasonable numbers of them to show up from other than OEM sources (and in some cases that NEVER happens). After a particular domestic model has been around for awhile (say, long enough to have an average use of about 50,000 miles or so) any equalization of prices for parts between the foreign and domestic cars goes out the window. It's a simple numbers game. One can possibly argue that the european car parts are better made and will last longer, but the fact remains that these are still man-made parts and will wear out eventually and when they do it can be a wallet-cleansing experience. As far as parts availablity goes, I can relate one of my own experiences....Had a radiator cap fall off during a trip from Oregon to California in a MBZ....The owner did not properly secure it. We estimate it was lost about 50 miles from the Oregon-California border. It should have been an easy part to find, right? Well, NO ONE closer than 50 miles >from the SF bay area had one. We wound up driving the rest of the way home with a trunkful of distilled water and a ziplock baggie attached to the radiator with a rubber band. (The Benz worked fine this way, BTW). Finally, remember that in spite of the most meticulous maintenance, there are still circumstances beyond the control of the owner that will necessitate repairs. About a year ago, a neighborhood a few miles away >from us had a rash of Airbag ripoffs (a very often stolen item here in CA) The bags were ripped from fairly high-end cars-Mercedes, Lexuses, Lincolns and Cadillacs. I heard through the auto-repair grapevine that the cost to replace the stolen Mercedes airbags was about $6000.00, in the Caddies it was somewhere around $3500.00 -Scott Article: 318507 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Gunner Subject: Re: thanks, George!
