OK, you asked for it.... Howdy, Bill. Among my many sick personality disorders is a "thing" for making-up crude, bawdy lyrics to popular song tunes. Hey- we all have our bad habits, right? I rarely write them down and have forget more than I remember. The title: "I've Been Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart" was part of the punch-line from a joke on country music. I made-up the chorus on the spot: "I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart. You said your love was real, but it was just a faaaaaaaaaaa-art... Now that swirlin' water says that we must part, 'cuz I been flushed from the bathroom of your heart." (wahhhh--deee--wahhhh-wahhhh, TWANG!) Never did write any verses for that one- just the chorus. Guess I could, without too much trouble. I can "hear" the music to it in my head; sounds a lot like every country tune from the 50's and 60's that ended with the steel guitar wah-wah-twanging. "Great Speckled Bird" works, if you add the "twanger." I've had a couple of road-house musicians ask me about using the ones I've finish, but I never pursued it. I can carry a tune, but don't know if I could display my mental illness in front of a live audience. ;-) To give some idea of just how warped my little hobby gets: This is the first verse from a spoof on Randy Travis's "Diggin' Up Bones:" "I looked into my dresser drawer and found an old sock there. I put them panties on my head- the ones you used to wear. If you were only here then, darlin', we could get it on, but tonight I'm sittin' alone, yankin' my bone..." and the Charlie Pride classic: "Koe-Li-Ju was a wooden indian standin' by the door. He had some "wood" for the indian maid over in the antique store... Koe-Li-JUUUUUUUUUUUH! Wishin' he could give that girl a spank, and wishin' she would give his cr*nk a yank, yank ah-yank! Oh, it gets worse... There... You have my confession. I'd go to church and beg forgiveness, but then, God help me, I start making them up to go with the hymns, especially the new, contrived "hymns" you hear these days. My wife slaps me when she hears me, singin' low: "Holy, Holy, Holy, Cheese and Macaroni, Chips and Guacamole..." *>SMACK!<* Hurts, too... Mentally yours, Dave S. True, the FCC specs for a AM channel limits the transmission to 5kHz, and most radio receivers do much the same, but a lot of radio stations cheated on this and let it go a bit further. The problem with most of today's "church goers" is they've forgotten the Bible - or at least what it *really* says (vs. some "person's words" - who have their own unholy agenda). That's what has frustrated many of us - that many (if not most) churches have become a social club - who have basically forgotten God- save to use his name only to justify their agenda. They participate in rituals and meaningless activities by habit rather than by conviction- having long ago diverged from inspired living. In the process- they've also forgotten that God has a (IMHO) great sense of humor. It's been the subject of literature for years - even comparatively recent stuff - such as: "Oh really," said Picard, not buying it for a second. "And just where, in all aspects of creation, can your hand be seen?" Q smiled toothily. "Why Picard ... who do you think came up with the duck-billed platypus?" (STTNG). A joke, of course - but one I'm betting even God enjoys - after - he has to have a sense of humor - he put's up with our arrogance, after all... just my .02 -- randy guttery A Tender Tale - a page dedicated to those Ships and Crews so vital to the United States Silent Service: http://tendertale.com Article: 319384 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: David Stinson Subject: Re: Ping Dave Stinson References: <24152-42DC82FD-432@storefull-3177.bay.webtv.net> Message-ID: Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 16:01:12 GMT Gary Tayman wrote: > Forget country, you should do rap. It simply moves the ground reference point on the other side of the "cathode" resistor. It doesn't have a separate bias supply, I doubt. Radios are notoriously CHEAP. I'm thinking we have a shorted turn in one of the two transformers. Is the AC drive to both tubes with a tone-modulated sig gen the same at all volume levels? That would clear the input transformer, which probably isn't the problem anyways. One turn in a plate transformer shorted will do what you're seeing. Makes the core mag fields go crazy when the current alternating in the shorted turn causes a crazy magnetic storm in the core. This screws up the output load on the tubes, of course. Does it clear up when you disconnect EITHER tube or just one? What happens if we take the tube that will run single ended and put it in the OTHER socket? Swap 'em and see. Also, put your VTVM on the grid bias line and measure the negative voltage...not on the grid, on the other side of the grid resistor where it goes to the bias resistor (or field coil in older sets). Then, after establishing this voltage, unplug one tube and read it. Plug that tube back in and pull the other tube and read it. Should be about the same decrease in grid bias with either of the two output tubes removed....a cheap tube check. Glad this isn't the cathode biased 5660 power amp in a Leslie 122 organ speaker. The tubes run at near-red-plates, normally, to make them more linear, class A. Pull one tube or blow one filament and the good tube has little bias and increased screen/plate voltage...making it really glow red, then! Some I find run for years that way....amazing. -- Larry Article: 319391 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: oldcoot@webtv.net (Bill Sheppard) Subject: Re: OT - Ping Dave Stinson Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 09:56:42 -0700 Message-ID: <24152-42DD30CA-499@storefull-3177.bay.webtv.net> References: Good grief, David. I went back and checked - it's the MKII of the 1300, 1400 and 1500 series (not the 1200) that has the cueing problem - and it's the entire arm lift mechanism - not just the cueing lever -- i.e. at the end of the disc -if auto return is enabled -- the stylus is drug back across the vinyl. And yes - one has to be very careful when "hand cueing" the start of a disc - there is *no* damping - the stylus will just drop if you let it go from any height. best regards... -- randy guttery A Tender Tale - a page dedicated to those Ships and Crews so vital to the United States Silent Service: http://tendertale.com Article: 319402 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Lou deGonzague Subject: Re: Push pull output question References: <1121734432.266693.149750@g43g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> <1121790765.345796.48460@g49g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> <1121805619.695825.58360@g14g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> Message-ID: <0ceDe.36122$e%5.7212@twister.nyroc.rr.com> Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 21:24:12 GMT Also use a vom like a 260 not a DMM. I normally don't respond to Steve's posts, etc. - however I'm making an exception here because he has (IMHO) made an honest and sincere effort to be helpful in this instance -- and for once it *is* on topic. The problem with the MKII series of Technics models SL-1300, 1400 and 1500 is that they have an inherent design flaw that put so much torque on a part that it splits after a few years of use. These started breaking as soon as two years after manufacture, and while Panasonic was aware of it - even tried to redesign the part - there is no "off the shelf" fix - which is sad considering the quality, etc. of the rest of the turntable. Joel, who has a business called "The Turntable Factory" in South Carolina does a very good job of fixing these units - but the price is far more than I'd care to invest in it ($200+) - and since parts aren't available for me to fix it- this unit will be used as-is until I either finish transferring my vinyls - or find another unit. I could use my Garrard SL-95, but it isn't the quality the SL-1300 is (again, IMHO). So while I appreciate Steve's effort to help in this matter - I'm afraid the manual isn't useful without parts- and unfortunately -- they just aren't available. best regards... -- randy guttery A Tender Tale - a page dedicated to those Ships and Crews so vital to the United States Silent Service: http://tendertale.com Article: 319404 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Tim Mullen Subject: Re: Ping Dave Stinson Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 22:06:53 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: References: <24152-42DC82FD-432@storefull-3177.bay.webtv.net> In "Gary Tayman" writes: >Forget country, you should do rap. Then, if he measures from each grid socket to chassis, he can see if both signals are the same level. The shorted transformer secondary winding will not show the same AC on both grids with signal input from the driver tube. If he has the luxury of a dual trace scope, he can check the phase inversion, too. Unplugging both tubes eliminates the output transformer for the moment. To test the output transformer, shut down the radio completely and unplug for safety. Leave the audio power tubes out of their sockets. Allow the HV PS to bleed off. Apply audio from another audio power amp to each plate connection on the output transformer, one at a time to chassis ground. What he hears in the speaker won't be very loud, but it should be EQUAL and UNDISTORED. I use another audio plate transformer hooked up backwards for high voltage audio power for this test, here. It's a simple single-ended plate transformer off an old AA5 radio I scrapped, the kind that's riveted to the 4" speaker. Apply audio power to the speaker wires and plenty of high impedance drive comes out the plate-B+ wires to drive this test. It would take many, many ignored warnings before any fines are issued. Just look at the enforcement news that appears in any of the Ham journals. Someone playing a around with a modified part 15 device is small potatoes. It would take numerous complaints before the FCC even became involved. You can make something that will oscillate in the range you want by making around 60 turns of 22AWG enameled wire around a 1/2" form. Tap the coil (by bringing about 1" of wire off the coil and twisting it, before continuing the windings) at about 10 turns. This will get you into the X-band using a standard tuning cap. If you could use anything around 1050- 1080, I may have a crystal you could use, and that would be much more stable than a VFO, and much less noisy than a PLL. Cicuitry for a tube BCB transmitter is pretty simple, there are plenty of schematics available for 'carrier current' transmitters (which can be modded to run into a longwire if you REALLY want to go that route). I could draw one up for either crystal or Hartley oscillator (VFO) (I've built enough of them.. ) Article: 319428 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: CalBubba Subject: Re: OT - Ping Dave Stinson Date: 19 Jul 2005 23:48:01 -0500 Message-ID: <42ddd73a$0$16776$bb4e3ad8@newscene.com> References: <24152-42DD30CA-499@storefull-3177.bay.webtv.net> Bill Sheppard wrote: > Good grief, David. I suspect they didn't know that things were about to change. There was a move to 12v tubes, and even though transistors were around nobody anticipated that they'd be taking over in a few years. In the mid-fifties transistors were still expensive, didn't have much in the way of high frequency capability, and they were still so new that few knew how to use them properly. So the tube manufacturers went on as they'd been doing. If you expect demand, you put money into development. The Nuvistor came along at about the same time, and it had the advantage of size, besides being better in some applications. There was even a 12V Nuvistor or two. But instead of a long life of 12V tubes, transistors became good a lot faster, including the addition of the FET. ONce they could handle higher frequencies, and do it well, they did a better job of operating off 12V than the 12V tubes, so the things were retired after a relatively short life. A small device that used little current versus large devices that still required quite a bit of current for the filament alone? A fairly easy choice once the transistors could do what was needed. Had things gone differently, and transistors didn't work out (like that famous QST article that said they'd not be much use to hams), the development done on 12V tubes would have been warranted, and their design life time would have been longer. But the venue is not exclusively focused on the "sound" (the people are there primarily for another reason). That is when the music or sound begins to interfere with the venues primary purpose. Try this, Pick a spot where the music is to be obviously concentrated (primary sound), like a dance floor would be or band stand or in front of the DJ. Set the acoustics to play that area and let the spill over to be enjoyed by those who prefer to converse with out shouting or being distracted. But can the DJ's ego handle the fact that this would be considered background music (off of the primary area of sound concentration). Once I adopted this philosophy when I was a live sound engineer, there were many more pleased people. Those included those who wanted the loud or full sound to totally focus on the music and those who wanted to be near the excitement but still hold an intimate or personal conversation as a group of friends would do. Also can't let your engineering shot go unchallenged. What I am referring to is instructions for *hardware*. It may be silly of me, but I believe that (at least generally speaking), the manufacturer is *the* expert on his product. For about the last ten years or so, my engineering duties consisted of doing forensic science for my employer, a large telephone company: acoustic shock, electrical shock, noise mitigation, RF interference, fire and/or arson investigations, corrosion/electrolysis, stray neutral currents as related to agricultural livestock, lightning strike investigations, high voltage protection, bonding and grounding issues, power crosses and testifying about all of the above in a court of law or before the state Public Service Commission (not to mention actually having to resolve the problem). Usually no instructions for that and often times I had to write the book... Believe me, there were many days I wished I could have "just read the instructions". 73, Carter K8VT Article: 319449 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: " Uncle Peter" References: Subject: Re: What are these tubes? Its characteristics are as follows: Tombstone style, front speaker, brown/black wood. H=18in,W=10in,D=8in, all approx. All square corners. BCB+1SW band. Large-pin/pre-octal tubes. Top 2 inches hinged in back to expose phono table and p/u arm when lifted. Est. manuf. date: '32-'34. Probably one of the better-known brands available on the East Coast. I have looked thru many collections posted on the net but have never been able to find this set as I remember it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please reply on-group. I haven't the space for them. And I have a moral problem with waste and hording. So I hit upon an idea that's worked splendidly: I got some boxes- most about the size of a shoe box, which has proven to be sufficient- and marked each with the name of a radio type which I collect- RAK/L, RBH/L, ARC-5, BC-348-R/-P/-Q, ARB, ATB, RCA Light Aircraft etc. Under the name, I put a list of the tubes used in that radio. In each box will go six to ten of those types. Voila! Instant tube stock for repairs; just grab the appropriate box. And I have "project boxes," in which go the tubes and parts for specific, pending homebrew projects (i.e. "1928 MOPA Xmtr), and a couple for "specials," like old battery or sub-mini tubes. When I'm finished, all the "left-over" tubes will be either sold or given away. Should I later need a tube I'd given away or sold, the few bucks it costs are more than worth it; no more wasted material, wasted space and needless aggravation. I only wish I'd been smart enough to do this sooner. Regards, David S.
