I wanted to figure out how they ended up suggesting 30 turns to 10 turns. - lower mu will mean more turns and the coil will approach more of a narrow resonant circuit than a wider flat one. - my interprotation - the "MU" ,which is a property of the ferrite material will affect the number of turns needed.. so perhaps this is why it is better to buy the made up ones, rather than to build them using TV ones.. John, do I have all the information above to arrive at this in a calculation? I wondered how this can be measured, one of the difficulties it seems is trying to figure out if it is working optimally. if one had a meter that measures signal strength, Perhaps swapping transformers with different turns rations, one could, by trial and error arrive at the right turns ratio? this would be pretty difficult to do with any accuracy by just listening to the radio I would think. The stuff to check these Un-Uns would be Vector Impedance Meter... and Spectrum analyser and calibrated radio with accurate meters... Gary and my other buddy Kim Herron went through all that part... Kim was supprised that the impedance of the transformers and the loss was all very close to uniform from 1/2 Mhz.. 550 khz way up past 30 Mhz.. really wasn't too ugly even as high as 108 mhz top of the FM band... Wire length I think won't make much difference in the impedance.. height above ground effects it a little... but again not much... Gary during the winters has use of a field across from his house and there he runs phased pairs of these beverage antennas that are 800 feet long .... and 300 feet between the antennas in the pair... terminated with 600 ohm resistors so that they are single direction only ..... on 1.8 Mhz.. 160 meter ham band he can outhear my 4 square array... and it isn't too bad!.. Gary puts them about 2 feet above ground... the ones I have here are shorter... about 400 feet.. and for the most part mine are 6 to 8 feet above ground... so I can walk through the yard.. and the guy that cuts the grass isn't ducking while riding the mower ... I don't think it is all that critical about whether the antenna was a 450 ohm antenna.. or 600 ohms.... a little off isn't near as important as having the transformers being level across the desired frequency your interested in using them on... and as you stated... the large number of turns... creates large impedance bumps along the way as the thing goes through some resonant points... Gary made my inside box so that it has two outputs on it... one is 50 ohms... and that feeds the Ham Rig... and the other is for hooking the old radios up to it... The device could have been considered a 'Big Absorption Wavemeter'. He was prosecuted for "Theft of electricity"! My thought about how 'the authorities' might have become aware, was maybe a distortion in the radiation pattern of the transmitted signal around the antenna site. Or perhaps someone just 'ratted'! But hey; it wasn't like he was taking a kilowatt or two to heat his house! I thought there was a distinct lack of correctness or fairness in that! Namely: Joe Blow #1 builds a 'big' radio receiver and takes enough energy out of the ether to light a lamp. Joe Blow #2 builds a crystal set and takes a few microwatts to power a set of headphones! the difference is only in the degree not basic principle; but I'm not into jurisprudence! But in fact will not any tuned circuit extract some energy from the RF field of the transmitted signal? Even the micro, microwatts of signal picked up by the tuned input of the first tube/valve of a typical radio, at say minus 120 dBm is RF energy? Anybody on that side of the pond remember that? Message-ID: Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 01:57:31 GMT A couple of things can cause this type of arcing; excess voltages at the elements in the gun, or contamination inside the CRT. Unfortunatly, I've experienced the same thing with CRT's used in older video games. These often get jarred while they are on location, which causes stuff to break loose inside the envelope. The tube will fail if its transported laying down (CRT screen up). The loose crud gets down in the gun, and when its powered up, fireworks. I would suggest pulling the socket from the CRT, and measuring the element voltages. If they are all OK, suspect contamination. Might be worth holding the CRT with the face down, and shaking it (gently). Can't hurt! Five bands, eleven tubes plus 6E5 eye, RF stage, two IF stages with 3 variable BW IFT's and Type 42 P-P output to a 12 inch speaker. I had to experiment, and cut out the four electrolytics and tacked in temporaries, and it was picking up SW bands on about a foot of wire. The BC audio is great, but there are some challenges with intermittent AC hum (heater-cathode short?) and I think the AVC. The challenge is the finish. There are a couple of sections on the upper corners of the cabinet that have elaborate "inlays"... which I'm afraid might be of the patterned paper persuasion. The finish is finely crazed, and I'm just wondering if anyone has tried an gentle stripping job and managed to preserve a "paper inlay". The patterns would be some work to reproduce. I did some gentle scraping with a fingernail on the border pattern and the finish flaked off. Close peering with a magnifier showed a grain pattern in the different coloured bits, so maybe I'm a very lucky boy! Still, the intricacy of the work makes it hard to believe it might be wood. There are a couple of gouges that will need some work, and this is one cabinet in my accumulation that I'd think would justify a good, careful refinish job. Incidentally, if you look to the leftmost knob, the bandswitch, you'll see a small lens above it. I thought that was someone's kludge, and then discovered a small semaphore assembly behind it. As you change bands the light colour changes to match the color of the band markings on the dial. Too bad the dial is a bit faded. Add a message to the images with the name of your website across the bottom. Open them with paint, grab the center marker in the bottom line and drag it down to make room for the tag, then add your marker. It takes about 30 seconds per image. 2. You could just move all the images to a folder on the website for a couple days so he doesn't have anything to link to. Then put ups some temporary images with the same names that apologize to visitors to your website, while showing his Ebay user name and tell everyone that he's an image thief. -- ? Michael A. This dufus has a perfect feedback record, and yet here he is pulling a dumb move like this that could easily get his account terminated. I presume he actually has one of these radios, but is just too lazy to take a picture of it. I would simply email the guy and explain to him that you don't appreciate his theft of your pictures and text (against eBay rules), and point out to him that this gives the appearance of fraud, and eBay would probably cancel his account (and his perfect feedback) if you complained. Ask him to terminate the auction immediately, and suggest that he link to your site as a better approach to adding information to his auctions. I did this once, and got a very nice email back from the seller. She simply didn't realize that what she did was a problem. Is the 50C5 plate red? Shorted bypass cap on cathode resistor or leaky interstage cap from driver plate. Grid 50C5 to HOT CHASSIS should be about zero VDC. The tiniest leak in the 50C5 grid coupling cap will really pull down the power supply... The 50C5 could also be leaky or internally shorted to its screen, which will cause the grid to go REAL high...usually destroying it. Swap the 35W4 for a 1KV silicon diode cathode to plate and see if the voltage comes up normal....bad 35W4. Watch the 50C5 carefully if you do this. The 35W4 only allows so much current through its internal resistance and may be protecting the 50C5. The diode is damned near a short in the forward bias. FWIW, I've had stuff taken from my website too. The classic was several complete pages translated into Chinese which I thought was pretty cool and I was tickled to be broadcast in China! I think somewhere on my site I say the stuff is free for the taking...after all, posting a hobby website on the internet shouldn't be like having to put on a uniform with a badge and stand on guard daring people to copy it. I certainly won't get bent out of shape if someone uses my material in promotion of the hobby. I'm flattered if they do. Yes, it would be courteous to ask but courtesy seems to be a scarce commodity these days. Now if you take my stuff with the goal of claiming its your own or making yourself a buck off of my efforts I'll be sorely pissed off. And thats where Terry's guy still isn't off the hook from my perspective. He could have simply posted some links to Terry's website as a route to more info instead of using Terry's actual photos to glam up his cheesy ebay offering. I think that terry's *high road* letter simply gave the scoundrel an out to continue with what remains a deceptive ad. -Bill Article: 322658 of rec.antiques.radio+phono Subject: Re: 1/2 D cell 1.5 ?
