These are common models but I think they have a good reputation for performance in the 8-tuber world. One caveat would be the 6X5 rectifier tube that is often discussed. For the set to be a daily driver it makes sense to do some sort of workaround to keep it from taking out the power xfmr. Many 1930-40s radios say that. Now much of that is part of the normal broadcast band. Its still a one-band broadcast radio and isn't from the 20s and has nothing to do with some bigger set from the 20s. And auction teasers do encounter resistance here - especially when the header doesn't indicate such. Hehe, part of the price of free advertising and not being familiar with the venue. It has been fun, no hard feelings, mmmkay? Its an interesting little set nonetheless. Any indication on a cabinet label that it could be Canadian? That oversized power xfmr could be a 25 Hz version. I won't miss the money". There is often a trade between time and money. Those who don't have money use time to make things up, be it doing things themselves (using time rather than money) or patience (if I don't rush at this, I can make the best use of my money). Those who have lots of money don't want to fuss with making that sandwich, or waiting for a copy of The Radioron Designer's Handbook to appear at that used book sale for $2. They place a premium on their time, so they'd rather spend money than time. But of course, those who have time but little money, often the trip is as important as the destination. Fixing up that old radio is an end in itself, while the person who can pay someone else to do it misses out on that. The headphones are genuine, and designed for listening to a TO in a plane or bus, where some people may not share the listener's enthusiasm for shortwave. Note the flat, 90 degree angle plug-That was designed for TOs that had the headphone jack in the rear of the chassis, so you could plug them into the set and still close the back cover of the cabinet all the way. I have seen these phones shown in a sales brochure for the TO as an option. The phones are a fairly rare option, although I don't know how much of a premium I would place on them. They are kind of in the same rarity class as the plug-in ballast adaptor thingie that Zenith offered for listening to a TO on 220 Volts. One set out a few dozen encountered might have the option, most will not. A nice restoration job-but not $760+ nice. There are at least three sets here on the shelf awaiting their turn that I could make look just as nice with the right amount of patience. It ain't that hard if the stag covering is fully intact and the dial plastic is unscathed. -Scott DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS ABOVE! At the front of the book there is a section intended for salesmen that gives tips on how to use the in-store tube tester to sell more tubes. One of the tips goes something like this: "Advise the customer with a weak tube that her other tubes, even though they register "good" on the tester, are probably going to weaken soon, and should all be replaced with fresh tubes to ensure optimum performance." "Once the sale of a replacement tube is made, the salesman should break the old tube in view of the customer. Shorted turns cannot. Occasionally you may run into a transformer that has windings internally connected or has a winding with more than one tap. Think about it -- how many radios have you seen that didn't work, where the problem was a tube? Yet, just like the joke about a boy who lost a nickel a block away, but is looking for it here because the light's better, tubes are easy to check; so a consumer will remove all the tubes and take them to the nearest 7-11 store for testing. Invariably at least one tube will be weak -- so he buys it, and puts the radio back together only to find it still doesn't work. The radio is then taken in for repair. A few years ago I wrote a page on "how to fix your own car radio" which walks you through the basic steps of checking for 12 volts, speaker connections, etc. For me it was a free ad, as newsletters and magazines reprinted this article (sometimes without my permission) and people used it. Generally this resulted in non-technical people trying without success to fix it, and I would get it for repair. Now that I'm back into original service the page has returned, but at present it's still too new to bring results. If you want to see what I'm talking about, it is at: http://home.gate.net/~gtayman/check.htm I'm expanding on it however. I'm planning to write some "tech tips" for various car radios, which may be as helpful to you, as technicians, as it is to me from inept people who try to do it. I've already written one that I will post soon -- how to access the on-off switch on a 1956-57 T-Bird. My next one will be how to fix a slipping tuner thumbwheel on a 68-69 Mopar. Such articles will no doubt find their way into Thunderbird/Roadrunner/etc. magazines, providing free advertising into places which would otherwise be very expensive. -- Gary E. My Radio Shack dictionary of electronics talks of the inability of the ear to respond to bass frequencies (though the wording isn't clear if they are talking generally or just at low volumes), so a "loudness control" is used to boost the bass a bit as the volume goes down. It is a "distortion", but it was fairly common in old equipment. I don't know if it's still used in modern equipment. At least, it's not specific to equipment, ie someone designed a lousy radio so they added some bass boost to compensate. It does corelated the bass boost to volume control level. The Audio Cyclopedia gives a more defined definition, but doesn't really explain what it means.
