I remember many years ago, I went fishing with a charter group. So -- what was he planning to do on his vacation? I'm not kidding -- go fishing! Years later I'm doing much the same thing. I now work with older car radios as a business. Yahoo had the market in Japan quite a while before ebay ever came to the scene there. I'm registered there and have purchased a couple of items. In the US it seems Yahoo Auctions is doing the slow implosion, along with countless other ebay wannabees who have fired and missed. People naturally want to sell their stuff where there is the highest volume of viewers regardless of what site it is. I can understand people getting into a tiff over fees and screwups and marching off to the The Number Two Auction Site. But that will neither kill off the big bear nor will it enhance Number Two. In fact, I didn't realize Yahoo(US) was still doing auctions until just recently when someone mentioned it. I haven't checked their offerings in years, literally. It gained a reputation years ago as being a place for sellers who were thrown off of ebay. Thats probably where this 'alisher' guy will show up next and I imagine they neither will refund bidders who get scammed. Just my 2 cents worth, with no added handling fees. -Bill Article: 328529 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Pete_O" Subject: Re: How to wire variac with voltmeter and ammeter? I don't have enough information to make that judgement with any certainty. I tried to make two points in my post. First, the original poster wanted to blame eBay for "facilitating" a fraudulent seller, and allowing him to continue to operate so that they could continue to rake in their exorbitant fees. As best as I can determine, eBay acted promptly in closing his account. They did not "facilitate" the fraud, if that's what it was, which occurred over a very short period of time, in an account that had a decent track record. I have seen eBay act quickly against fraudsters a number of times in the past. Of course, some people just hate eBay because it is profitable for its shareholders, and the sellers who use it. Secondly, I questioned whether there might have been factors other than fraud which caused this situation. I personally know someone who had a serious accident, and was unable to complete some eBay shipments in a timely fashion. As a result, he got some negatives from people who suggested he was lying about his accident. My point is that things aren't always what they seem. People like to jump to conclusions according to their own prejudice and preconceived notions. Let the people who have access to all the facts make that judgement. If the guy is a fraud, he needs to do some serious time. If not, he's got some big problems to fix. -- Mike Schultz "Scott W. One guy I know of sells items that are available on the Amazon website. He starts the item at the same price as the Amazon website, and charges standard shipping. How does he make money? Amazon ships for free, he charges the normal shipping rate, and basically has the items dropped shipped from Amazon direct to his buyers. Sometimes he gets extra lucky and the items sell for above the web page prices, and he makes an additional profit. Not bad for just juggling orders. There are a lot of folks doing similar deals on eBay. They know where to get the stuff cheap, and act as a middleman without ever touching the merchandise. If I make an accurate current measurement at 50 or 80 volts it serves little purpose since those are not the currents that will be seen at 115v- they tell me only that I might expect smoke when the rectifier conducts and that I should do some more tests with my ohmmeter before continuing. I abhor digital autoranging also. It can be somewhat eased with an "analog" bar meter (better DVM's have it) and not using autorange. -Pete Article: 328538 of rec.antiques.radio+phono Subject: Re: Philco tube lettering question From: Ron Ramirez References: Message-ID: Date: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 21:55:17 GMT In the case of 42E, 7B7E, et al., E means Export. -- Ron Ramirez - Evansville, Indiana Visit PhilcoRadio.com at http://www.philcoradio.com/ and the Philco Phorum at http://philcoradio.com/phpBB2/index.php Ken wrote in news:PRAtf.25095$Ou3.11079@dukeread09: > Looking through my Mallory Radio Service Encyclopedia I noticed Philco > put out some sets in '41 '42 with the letter 'E' after the tube type, > such as 7A8E, 7B7E, 35A5E. They canned the asshole's account quite pronto and that put the brakes on adding more negatives. I really don't think that is by design...or even by a stretch that they are intentionally "protecting" the scammer. I'd rather see them can his ass as rapidly as possible rather than deferring to those that want to add their offering to the already steaming dogpile. Thats a "software decision", not necessarily a corporate credo. As to the deleting of the forum topic...I don't know how that works because I've never used their forum. Do the topics just 'go away' when the subject of ire gets canned? Beats me. On the surface I'd have to say that nixxing a public forum topic without solid legal justification does indeed smack of something...credibility of the venue or whatever. I still think that your suggestion of 'protecting the scammer' is a pretty long reach. Its more like protecting their own ass as a means of damage control by squelching the topic and hoping it will go away....which of course it will not. This incident will become the latest poster-boy of internet scams. 'Caveat emptor' means little to people who have been ripped off for several hundred bucks and are searching for someone to blame or are hoping for recompensation. They can actually have a pretty decent service life IF they are fully discharged prior to each recharge. Unfortunately, that runs counter to the usage patterns of most people who use these tools. As for the replacement cost, you'll get no argument from me. I tried to buy a replacement 13.2 volt battery for my Ryobi-built Sears Craftsman electric screwdriver a while back, and it was unobtainable, but the cost for a similar 12V battery was pretty outrageous. In fact, I wound up purchasing a new high-torque 19.2 volt unit with TWO batteries, charger and a flashlight for about double what a single battery for the old unit costs. I am still able to use the old unit with its anemic old battery as a drill, so I am pretty happy with that compromise. > BTW, I power a workshop screwdriver from the 5 VDC output of a surplus > PC power supply. I have NEVER seen NiMH cells in anything that suddenly draws a huge amount of current like a portable power tool. There must be some characteristic about them that makes them not well-suited for those types of things. They work very well in devices that have a stable current draw though, like a camera or radio. I was at Home Depot yesterday and saw some high-end battery-operated tools that used Li-Ion batteries. The replacement cost for those batteries is probably pretty frightening. -Scott -- DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS ABOVE! Even if the seller (or buyer) is a scammer, the rules state quite succinctly that you may not use any personal information in a public arena. This really includes the posting of sellers as scammers on usenet, and could technically get the poster's account closed. Rather, it appears that eBay is covering its own ass from further scrutiny regarding the actions of this seller. I'm not saying they ARE actually doing that, it just appears that way. It has been so long since I have left a bona-fide negative on anyone that things may have changed since then, but I know that it used to be possible to leave a negative for someone who was NARU'ed for excessive negative feedback or other forms of abuse. I did it once to a guy who bid on one of my auctions that had been kicked for being a non-paying bidder on about three dozen other auctions. If the blog complaints about the crooked seller are any indication, that capability has apparently been removed. Although the ability to leave a negative on a kicked seller seems kind of futile, keep in mind that the negatives may be the only indelible indication of who got ripped by these folks. > > As to the deleting of the forum topic...I don't know how that works > because I've never used their forum. On the surface I'd have to > say that nixxing a public forum topic without solid legal justification > does indeed smack of something...credibility of the venue or whatever. The ebay mods tend to can any topic that is critical of eBay or tends to make eBay look bad. Given that they own the forum and the server on which it resides, they have every legal right to do that. However, in this case, when we're talking about a bona-fide scam artist that has burned hundreds of people in a short and very critical time, Deleting the posts seems ill-advised. >I > still think that your suggestion of 'protecting the scammer' is a pretty > long reach. Now that's what I WAS implying :-) > which of > course it will not. This incident will become the latest poster-boy of > internet scams. There are some bad things that happen where no amount of spin or damage control will suffice to minimize the carnage.....The only thing that can be done is to ride the wave of adverse publicity, take a few lumps and hopefully walk away with some lessons learned. This is one of those things. I'll bet ebay puts some controls on how many auctions a seller can list at one time after this; If they don't, some variation of this scam will be pulled off again. > > 'Caveat emptor' means little to people who have been ripped off for > several hundred bucks and are searching for someone to blame or are > hoping for recompensation. This couple apparently worked diligently to > develop their 'final scam'. It will all come out in the movie :) Although I agree with other posters that eBay is not responsible for the actions of these crooks, It might behoove eBay to make the people who were ripped off whole for their losses on a one-time basis. This scam was apparently so perfectly executed and exposed and exploited so many weaknesses in the eBay system that the standard ebay response to burned sellers could cost eBay way more in lost confidence than any amount they could hope to save. An occasional rip-off occuring at any other time is read about and then quickly forgotten. A criminal action of this magnitude, occuring just before Christmas and affecting hundreds of Christmas shoppers, is likely to be remembered for a long, long time. -Scott -Scott -- DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS ABOVE! I hear ads on the radio all the time for companies selling "get-rich-selling-stuff-on-eBay" systems. They say that you never have to actually have posession of the goods, or have to deal with the shipping. It's great for the middleman. His costs are the initial advertising which brings in a bunch of "clients", who pay him for the privilege of peddling his merchandise on eBay. This shields the middleman from the advertising costs and customer service nightmares that a direct marketer would have to endure. If the middleman runs out of stock, or has some other supply problem, his "front" on eBay is the one who ends up looking like a fraud, and the anonymous middleman is protected by some carefully worded fine print deep in a user agreement. -- Mike Schultz " Uncle Peter" wrote in message news:dRWtf.36589$Mi5.28712@dukeread07... > > "Scott W. I used to know techs that worked there, and I visited their studio and transmitter site a few years ago. I noticed that the stereo encoder was still in the rack, however, it was turned off and disconnected. I asked the tech about that, and he said they turned it off several years ago, when they changed their format to talk. I jokily told him that its a must for political talk, you would have those to the right out of the right speaker, and those to the left out of the left speaker. He told me that it had become a real maintenance headache. He said they don't play music anymore and almost all of the feeds they get are in mono. When i had central air put in five years ago the inspector made the comment that I should replace the 150 Amp service, and hinted that they wouldn't approve the wiring on the Central AC/heat pump /Electric heater. A different inspector did the final, and it passed. I have a question for you, Mark. Why would you WANT to put in a smaller service? At some point in the future you will need to add something. Its cheaper to do it once, and do it right than add on extra breaker boxes. I should know, My property has a total of eight breaker boxes, several of which were added on to provide more circuits. I will be replacing several to eliminate the extra boxes, and to standardize on one brand of breaker, instead of the three non-compatible types I have right now. The cheap bastards who built the place ran a number of circuits around the fence line. The used indoor Romex without conduit, and splice the wire by simply twisting the wires together, and wrapping it with cheap electrical tape. There was horse fencing around the property line, and several of the lines caught fire. The breaker tripped on one, and I caught the second with smoke pouring out of it. I have also had the ground buss bar burn in one 100 Amp box, and one of the "hot" buss bars in another 100 Amp box. that is another reason to use a higher current breaker box. the first one that burnt was outdoors, on a wooden pole so it couldn't do much damage, but the second was in flames when i heard the frying sound of the buss bar burning where it had separated and was arching. It set half the breakers on fire, and was mounted in a wood framed wall, covered with wood paneling. If I hadn't heard it I would have lost my home. I beat the flames out with my bare hands and shut off the main breaker, but the breaker box and most of the breakers were destroyed. If it had been a higher current box it wouldn't have been as easy to fail in this way. It took months to get rid of the odor of burnt bakelite by using commercial odor removal chemicals, and leaving the doors and windows open as much as possible. i still catch faint traces from time to time. I was luck, because I have a separate cottage behind the house that I lived in while I worked to get rid of that stench. -- Service to my country? Observe how the cranking action turns the various shafts and gears. See which turns first, barrel or inner axel. Once you have confirmed the directions things are supposed to wind, then make sure the springs agree with the observations. You may want to squeeze the inner coil a bit to make the spring stay attached to the inner shaft. Before you reassemble, you might as well clean the old grease out. A good soak in kerosene for a few days may do the trick. Re lube with moly grease that has graphite added. Well, I take that back, there are voltage trip breakers > but I am not getting into that. That's only partially true. For example, if you want a 40W light bulb and you have a 240V power line to run it on (like in Europe and lots of other places), it will draw 0.167A. However, if you have a 120V line, the bulb will draw 0.333A. The catch is that you need different bulbs for the two cases, the first is a 240V bulb and the second is a 120V bulb. If you take a given bulb and reduce the voltage, the current will drop. Reducing the voltage reduces the current for most things: light bulbs, heaters, antique radios, most motors, etc. The main exceptions are electronic devices powered by switching power supplies and mechanical devices powered by induction motors. These do indeed draw more current as the voltage drops (this covers the compressors mentioned in another post). There are devices, mainly metal filament incandescent lamps (the common kind), that have a very high temperature coefficient of resistance. They don't obey Ohms law. Reducing the voltage by a certain percentage will reduce the current by less than you might expect. The heaters and filaments in all common tubes react the same way. -- Jim Mueller wrongname@nospam.com To get my real email address, replace wrongname with eportiz. I just ran across the heating suggestion on the Alumilite discussion forum and reported it here for those without the vacuum set up. I do not recall the details and could not locate it again when I searched earlier today. Sorry. My experience is that thickness has a lot to do with getting the bubbles out. The bubbles seem to be caused by moisture in the part A that is vaporized by the chemical reaction heat. A thin piece does not get as warm and hence less vaporization. Also, the bubbles that do form do not have as far to go to escape. All of this is just my theory on it based on what I have observed through lots of trial and error, mostly error. Also, the heavier your electrical service the less variation you see in your line voltage. As far as "deteriorated equipment" one box was less than five years old, and the other was barely a year old. They were run too close to their limit. That, along with the high temperatures here in Florida, and that causes a lot of problems. Do whatever you want, but I only want to do the job, ONCE. Personally, I find it amazing the lengths that some people will go to keep from doing something right. So what if it cost a few bucks more? Its about 25% more for a 200 Amp panel If you by a 200 Amp panel package with the circuit breakers, it is about the same price as a 150 amp and buying them separately. Its built out of heavier materials and will last a lot longer. Its false economy to have to keep repairing or updating something. I have a 100 Amp panel in the garage, 100 Amp in the main house, 30 amp in the cottage (and a separate 20 amp box for the water heater), 60 amp for the laundry building and well pump, 60 amp for the central air & electric heat, 20 amp in the tool shed, a 100 amp disconnect outside the house and the main breaker box on the other side of my driveway. Its located there, because they do not want the wires over a driveway. At one time there were two poles and two meters, but they forced the previous owner to remove the pole next to the house and upgrade the other service to handle both loads. -- Service to my country? If ready use Clipper S'87 compiler with some adjustment to the dBase source code :-> I am planning my Clipper database since I bought my first Zenith Z-148 "college PC" ... the program is not the problem, but who has the time for the "input" of e.g. 100 pages created with typewriter? I got one a couple of years ago for Christmas, for loading and unloading a boat in the dark. It's also great for looking under the bench for the parts that run away, or anything where you need light. It has 3 white LEDs and runs on a couple of AAA cells, I think (too lazy to open it). Mine was fixed on the headband, no big deal, but the newer ones can be adjusted up or down. An amazing amount of light, too. Cheers, Nelson Article: 328617 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Bill Jeffrey Subject: Re: Stunning? Stunned by the BAD Pictures Some Folks Take! I need a replacement battery for my 18-volt B&D reversible drill. Home Depot and Lowes just laugh at me, but the local Ace Hardware actually has 'em on the shelf for $65. The fun part? Right next to the battery display is my identical drill (now labelled Firestorm), with battery, charger, carrying case, and a few small accessories - for $62. WTFO? I may have told this story here already... My wife bought me a $39 "Coleman" battery drill kit about this time last year. Came with a spare battery. They were crap from the first charge so I tracked down the warranty company (Coleman is just a private labelling scheme and offers no support) and whined to them.
