My buddy KD9SV of course makes these transformers mostly for the 160 and 80 meter crowd... and they also work well down into the BC band ... I have 4 short beverage antennas... all are about 400 feet long in 4 different directions.. all fed from same coaxial feedpoint which is about 200 feet away from the house ... amazing what those 400 foot wires hear on AM band... sometimes you can actually listen to two different stations by simply switching the antennas. You snipped the part where someone doubted the seller's claim that the radio worked, when in their previous paragraph the seller was quoted as saying the radio gave off a waxy smell after being powered up for an hour. Hence my response that you did quote above. Regardless, to address your point, also raised by others, I think turning a radio on for an hour, perhaps even two, doesn't disqualify it from claims of "new in box". By any reasonable standard no one expects a new car to have *never* been driven, not even a few feet off the assembly line. Considering the hundreds of thousands of hours of potential lifetime in such a set, an hour or two is equivalent to that drive off the factory floor. The point here would be to convey the condition of the radio, not to lay claim to a literal approach to literacy. Now, if someone claims "sealed in the box", then breaking the seal would obviously void that claim, whether the radio was subsequently plugged in or not. -- Tim Mullen ------------------------------------------------------------------ Am I in your basement? It's the "Smith" of product names and the reason it was used in cartoons. There are hundreds of products and businesses named Acme, many trademarked. There's a chain called Acme Markets, Acme Brick Co., Acme Labs, Acme Electric, and on and on. Trademarks are not blanket. They are for specific uses. It's common throughout business, even entertainment. Take the name "Michael Fox". This was the name of an actor many years ago. He played bit parts and character roles. The easiest to find is his appearance as the little girl's father in "Young Frankenstein". Because of the name rule, a young actor with same name had to take the billing "Michael "J" Fox" when he came along. None of this prevents someone with the family name Fox from naming their son Michael. It just prevents someone from performing under the name if it causes confusion. If an accountant named Barry Manilow wants to hang out a shingle he's free to do so unless another firm trademarks it for similar uses. Harry & Ronnie Block have to use something other than H & R Block if they do taxes, though. I have a USB DSL modem that I only used for three months that SBC was supposed to get back. It got buried in a big pile of junk that I didn't touch for almost a year after I moved. Not only did they not charge me for the modem, they didn't even hit me for the early termination fee for having the service less than a year. When I was able to get DSL service again in my new house (it took them almost a year to upgrade the CO in my new location), I got a different modem that connected to the ethernet port instead of USB. It has always worked fine, but I have managed to acquire two or three others just like it at fleas in case the original one craps out. One of these was still in the sealed box and bag. I've also found a twin of the USB unit I had earlier, which comes in handy during our all-too-frequent power interruptions, since it is powered by the USB port and will plug right into my battery-powered laptop. (DSL RULES if your power source is spotty-the phone lines never go out, unlike cable). I see these things all the time at the local fleas around here......I would think that if people were actually hit with charges for this kind of unreturned equipment, I wouldn't see so much of it in the grey market.....They outnumber cable boxes (a fairly expensive rented device) by dozens to one at the fleas I attend. In another case, my wife got talked into trying out cell phone service >from a provider (Cingular) that I knew would never work here in the mountains. They sent us the phones (two fairly nice Sony Ericsson units), and we never activated them. I put the phones in my car trunk intending to ship them back, and forgot all about them. It's been about two years, and not a peep from Cingular. Most of these things are made in China, and probably wholesale for less that what it costs to ship them. For all I know, I was saving these companies some money by not returning the stuff. The drop that your returned DSL modem went to was probably the very cheapest place to ship in the world from your location, or close to it. -Scott -- NewsGuy.Com 30Gb $9.95 Carry Forward and On Demand Bandwidth Article: 332427 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: - exray - Subject: Re: Adios Earthstink Date: Sat, 08 Apr 2006 00:00:17 -0400 Message-ID: <123edalkbdd2i7e@corp.supernews.com> References: <1144456769.919256.35330@g10g2000cwb.googlegroups.com> <123e3gsqjdsgpe8@corp.supernews.com> Scott W. Be sure to let it dry several hours before lacquering over. You'd be surprised how much of a mini-blush environment a decal can create due to its trapping moisture. My cable service was back up before the landline after the hurricanes two years ago. Brighthouse sent trucks around with generators to charge the batteries in their UPSs before power was restored to my neighborhood. My dad lives next door, and was able to watch TV while his generator was running their well pump and refrigerator. The phones were out about a week longer than the cable, and cell phone service was very spotty, till after the landlines were all restored. -- Service to my country? After hunting all over the internet, I couldn't find it. Finally saw some equivalent circuits in the 1051 ARRL handbook here. There's still a place for paper! Anyway, it's a Majestic Frontenac (Rogers 10-85) that has some hifi pretensions, like variable IF bandwidth. The trouble spot is in the second RF transformer assembly, between the RF stage and the mixer. I'm thinking the increased coupling is to broaden the bandwidth??????? The assembly accomadates four bands in one can. Three of the secondaries were open and I got them fixed. (Eyesight will never be the same!) But you can guess how that is to work on, and I don't want to go back in again, so I want to make sure there are no possible shorts. The gimmick on the BC section is a quarter inch of about #38 AWG fabric covered wire (from the primary, with B+ of 230V) lying right against the enamel wire of the BC secondary. As a tool repair guy I got fix them regularly. Typically, after a guy gets, or almost gets, a broken ankle, they leave it in the high speed/low torque range. And as a result, I got to change out a lot of gear sets. They really don't like hitting a nail at high RPM when you have a 3" wood bore in them. The other repairs were replacing the handle because the owner didn't want to look like a sissy by putting the 18" x 3/4" extension handle on it. Jeff -- RESTRICTED AREA. I am talking about outages that occur as a result of ordinary seasonal, predictable weather patterns. The power delivery network here is very twitchy; it does not take much to cause an interruption that can last hours. When that happens, the cable TV will go down with it 99 times out of a hundred. When power is restored, I have seen it take as long as 12 additional hours for the cable system to come back on line. Compare that situation with the phones....I have only seen the phones go out once here, and that was because water somehow got into a sealed pole transformer outside of our house, which rendered telephone service kaput. Curiously enough, the DSL service tied to the same line continued to work perfectly....In fact, I used it to e-mail everyone to tell them not to try to call me because my phones weren't working! I will give props to one thing about cable....Its internet service is about 5 times faster than DSL, and it's excellent under normal conditions. -Scott -- NewsGuy.Com 30Gb $9.95 Carry Forward and On Demand Bandwidth From stephanie-at-gordsven-dot-com Tue Apr 11 10:43:36 EDT 2006 Article: 332478 of rec.antiques.radio+phono Newsgroups: rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Stephanie Weil Subject: Re: can an eBayer do this? My conscience says to offer > him more. Any thoughts? I, too, hate the "make me an offer" game, because it is often hard to determine what game the seller is playing. Usually when I am confronted with this situation I will try to get the seller to flesh out his expectations or give a ballpark figure, or simply ask "what'll you take for it?". From there, let your conscience and your level of desire for the item be your guide. I used that latter option a month ago when I acquired an R390A at a swap meet that was sparsely attended due to rain. The set was almost complete but showed some signs of hasty re-assembly, with the power cord intact but disconnected. The seller had no clue what the radio was or its operational status because he found it in his late father's attic and was not a radio guy. He told me he would take $50.00 for it; I gave him a hundred because $50 was too cheap for an R390A even in unknown condition. As it turns out the radio has problems but is restorable nonetheless, so the $100.00 was just about right. I also bought the Lucian Levy set that I posted pictures of recently >from the same guy for another $100.00. In that case, neither of us had any idea what the radio was worth, and I just bought it because I thought it looked cool. It turns out that that was quite a good deal. For all I knew at the time, though, it could have been worth less than what I paid. Peter, I just replaced the columns and part of the frame wood on the front door canopy of my ranch house. The guy who did the siding didn't do it quite right, and moisture was getting into the two wood pillars that supported the front of the roof canopy overhang. I leaned against one, and ended up in the bushes. Long story short, carpenter ants followed the damp wood all way up to the 2X4s and 2X6s (that weren't exposed to water) and by the time I discovered the damage there were only paper thin remants remaining! They ate everything! I spent a few days poking around to make sure all of the damaged areas were removed and all of the eggs destroyed! Perhaps that's normal for the Eico. The marker does look broad, and it doesn't look quite right either. Does it move along the swept trace as you vary its frequency? I believe the marker is actually a zero-beat, and its waveform should be spaced wider at its center. The way i always did it was =96 put an *ungrounded* shield over the converter (mixer) tube, and clip the sweeper's IF signal to that. It capacitively couples directly to the mixer plate with minimal detuning effect, so you've got an unmolested IF signal going into the IF strip. Turn down the attenuation as needed till you can see the top of the response curve as well as the baseline (the top should show a double hump or "camelback", indicating the IF stages are stagger-tuned as they should be). Turn up the sweep width as needed till you can see both ends of the response curve. >I set the signal generator to 25.75 mhz >and connected it to the external marker >input of the sweeper, and connected the >oscilloscope to the output of the video >detector. Electrolyrics maybe? I'd try the direct-injection method mentioned earlier, and look at the marker again. As an alternative to an ungrounded shield, you can just use a piece of hookup wire wrapped around the tube and taped in place, and clip to that. oc Article: 332508 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Daniele" References: <1144562976.198608.40520@i40g2000cwc.googlegroups.com> <1144565271.342339.278450@u72g2000cwu.googlegroups.com> Subject: Re: OT but a favorite subject here: HOW accurate are Google Maps in Google Local? Wrong again. A high compliance stereo cartridge (electrically mixed for mono for surface noise cancellation) should track the shellac as lightly as possible and still not "fly over" high frequency information on the disc. ANY tracking force heavier than needed to keep reliable stylus/groove wall contact is too much...period. Those Chinese crapophones also have the usual bad spring counterweighted tonearms, another record wear causer and a big cause of inner groove mistracking. My choice for this job: Technics SL-whatever with an SME 3009 Series II Improved tonearm. Cartridges: various, depends on media. For 78s: Grado Blue with proper 3 mil stylus, tracking at 1.5g. It's possible they decided one wasn't needed later in production. 12SA7 & 12SA7G are internally slightly different than the GT version (base diagrams 8R and 8AD, respectively) so a shield probably will be needed if you use a GT replacement. Who CARED about hum, rumble or anything over about 6 KHz on AM? NO one. Neither were those awful old Gateses with the cast iron straight 16" arm for transcription discs and good as a "turntable" anytime after about 1958. What has every FM I was ever in that was serious about music quality use for production? Technics with the stock arm. Some of the classical stations would use "audiophool" tables with erudite arms and carts...as IF it really would make any difference once mashed around in the compressor/limiter and the transmitter. >Uh, excuse me, 78.261's with 2.7 mil stylus with truncated tip and 45's >with nude elliptical stylus and 1/4 gram weight Hardly ANY cartridge would track anything properly at ¼ gram. But what I didn't see (as another poster pointed out) was how Western Electric had anything to do with this, other than boost the possibility of it turning up in someone's search. I live in Canada, I see these radios frequently, and the "made for" rear plate was very common on big name sets, but never have I seen one with both "Victor" and "Northern Electric" on the front label a radio. The "made for" name is the only one that ever went on the front. I never saw a Crosley/Moffat, for example. While Northern and Victor were both Montreal-based manufacturers, one would expect them to follow the custom of the day: the plate on the back with the name of the true manufacturer and the "made for" statement. NEVER both names on the front. And looking again, I am convinced that this is a fraud. Decals are all too lightly coloured to have lasted that long, and as I pointed out before, they are perfect. Message-ID: Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 17:17:09 -0400 I restored a Stewart-Warner R-119, including cleaning the chassis and all switches, replacing all paper and electrolytic caps, checking all resistors (and replacing most), checking coils, transformers, tubes, etc. When power was applied, it played immediately. But when I attempted alignment, when the RF and 1st detector trimmers were peaked, the set would break into oscillation at the high end of the dial. All shields were in place, and the wiring dress was generally not disturbed. So I was stumped. Then I remembered that originally the 1st detector RF transformer had an open primary. I was able to repair it, since the primary was on a separate cardboard sleeve on top of the secondary, with cardboard shims in between. I removed it and was able to find the broken winding start. I did not pay any attention to the way it was re-installed. Out of despiration, I reversed the leads to the primary. The oscillation stopped and the trimmers peaked nicely! So in this case at least, the winding direction matters. Guess I'll be more careful in the future to not the winding direction when transformers are rewound or repaired. Although the circuits are made to primarily pass a certain band of frequencies (channel dependent), they will still pass all frequencies to some degree. This bandpass, at least for frequencies lower than those the circuits are tuned for, will be flat for all practical intents and purposes once beyond the skirts of the tuned circuits. This is what allows for a reasonable expectation of a flat bandpass for tuning purposes. Your method is a good one, and I have used it before myself, but it has the possibility of driving too much signal into the IF strip, which will make it somewhat more difficult to tune properly.. in some odd cases. Your method also tends to work best when using a coil wrapped around the tube with a feedline connection on each end of the coil, to maintain constant impedence across the frequencies used, and not allow AC hum or other imbalances to cause problems. For the record, I recall seeing someone mention 'walking' the sound IF back to where it belongs.. this is a pretty good idea if it's really so far off.. but I suspect there is an electrical problem in the sound IF circuits that will need addressing before an alignment is done. Audio IF's are normally pretty forgiving and can be off a considerable amount and still get audio through them. Normally, the sound pick-off point inside the tuner is not going to fail. If the pick-off point is outside the tuner, then that point needs to be checked thoroughly... the video IF stage seems to be nearly perfect, and I certainly wouldn't touch that. As for the oscillator, have you tried injecting the signal generator unmodulated into the oscillator grid of the 6A8 (using the tube as a mixer) in place of the local oscillator? Also check for an open oscillator coil winding, and bad resistors/capacitors in the oscillator grid circuit. Also is the set inductive or variable capacitor tuned? Unfortunately, because the record companies don't get any royalties out of any of this old music - not to mention licencing problems sometimes - it's unlikely you'll see a lot of really old 78 rpm disks being copied and sold on regular CDs (or even LPs). Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2006 14:18:51 -0700 Message-ID: The shiny top surface of Bakelite is quite thin and can be worn or weathered (or polished!) away. When that happens, you are down into the pulpy underlayer which contains filler such as wood flour. The underlayer is basically impossible to polish. If you go to the Google archives of this group and search for phrases such as "shine dull bakelite" you will find many discussions of this issue. http://groups.google.com/group/rec.antiques.radio+phono?hl=en Some people use all sorts of goo on Bakelite, ranging from Vaseline to you name it. I recently received an email from a collector in Bulgaria who announced with delight that his Tesla Talisman looked great after he polished the cabinet with machine oil (!). I don't believe in applying wax, WD-40, or any other flavor of goo, to Bakelite because: 1. That stuff is temporary and just attracts grime over the long run. 2. Bakelite radios didn't come out of the factory with a coat of goo. The cabinet was bare, shiny Bakelite. If a seller says that his cabinets are not polished or sprayed with clearcoat, then I'd guess that he's picking cabinets that are very good in the first place and that need only a normal cleaning and little if any polishing. I have owned many things made of Bakelite, and in my experience, those with very good cabinets will look great with minimal polishing. Spit and an old baby diaper will make the good ones look new, once they are clean. A light polishing with something mild like Novus #1 or #2 can improve something like a small shallow surface scuff in an otherwise shiny surface. If you are starting out with a seriously weathered cabinet and you put it on a buffing wheel, I suspect you'll just grind farther down into the pulp. I own an old TV UHF converter which had never been taken out of the original box. The surface is shiny, but it doesn't have the deep glossy finish that you'll see on an over-restored 1950s hotrod that has 20 coats of hand-rubbed clearcoat. Most old radios were mass-produced appliances, sold at low prices. Manufacturers did not employ battalions of midnight elves to polish every cabinet until it shone like the sun. As a last resort, if the radio means a lot to you, I suppose you could treat the cabinet like an auto body and spray-paint it with the right color, followed by a little clearcoat. Again, you can find past discussions of this in the archives. Good luck. It's the bottom of the 10-tube line so there were a few missing features, such as not using much good quality veneer and skipping the Acoustic Adapter. The other cabinets such as 155, 157 and 160 all use the adapter. Here's one: no offense, but all that "hazardous" stuff is BS. Here's my evidence: I once, as a kid, had a wire recorder in my room at home that I played around with. Never got it to work, but it did run: play, fast forward and rewind. I remember the "magic eye" volume indicator on it--remember those? I'd say there was, at best, modest tension on the wire. Think about it: this is fairly thin stuff, and high tension would have snapped it. It was *maybe* a little more than the tension on a tape recorder. The reason I had one is that one of my friends, who was an electronics-geek buddy, somehow got us into the basement of a hotel in Chicago which had a ton of old electronics stuff in it, going back to the 1930s. (I think one of his relatives was connected with the hotel or with the company that went out of business.) We got to pick what we wanted and take it home. It was an electronics-tinkerer kid's wet dream. -- Pierre, mon ami. I wouldn't advise short tempered folks to attempt it. :-) Article: 332643 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: Tim Mullen Subject: Re: Library of Congress adds 50 more famed recordings Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2006 04:28:05 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: References: <1144848657.029497.133730@u72g2000cwu.googlegroups.com> <44403648.120280843@news.plus.net> <44414e32.126398281@news.plus.net> <44425cf6.130172593@news.plus.net> <_si%f.539$t61.443@bignews6.bellsouth.net> <443dc30a$0$3701$822641b3@news.adtechcomputers.com> In <443dc30a$0$3701$822641b3@news.adtechcomputers.com> David Nebenzahl writes: [about the deadly hazards of wire recorders] >Here's one: no offense, but all that "hazardous" stuff is BS. >Here's my evidence: I once, as a kid, had a wire recorder in my room at >home that I played around with. I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding of the physics of a wire in tension. They seem to believe that once parted, the two ends will continue to whip about the room on their own. Doesn't happen unless there's still stored energy in the wire, such as with a phonograph spring. For an ordinary wire, once you cut it the tension is released and it'll just sit there. If the spools keep turning, well, yeah, the wire ends will flail about. But they're not gonna reach out and bite you. And I would assume recorder wire was very soft steel, with little or no spring constant. -- Tim Mullen ------------------------------------------------------------------ Am I in your basement? One head per track, 5 heads per set. It was a Burroughs "5n" disk... real fast, for the time...... Wish I knew how much it held,,, but the memory just don't go back that far!!!! bob in phx.
