I remember the FCC and FAA demanding remote monitoring of any tower lights without a local operator at the transmitter back in 1988. We had two weeks to submit the information on what make and model of monitoring equipment we were using, or complete details of anything built in house. We didn't have anything so i designed and built a system that night, installed it the next morning, and mailed out the information that afternoon. 1: A current transformer to monitor lamp current. Free. was found at the transmitter site. 2: A 1024 Hz sine wave derived from a crystal reference that was gated by the lamp current and fed to a spare audio channel on the STL between the two tower sites. Free: built from my junk box. 3: A 567 tone decoder to detect the audio signal. $2.95 for a plastic project box. 4: A led mounted right beside the master monitor at the new tower site. It was on all day long, and tuned off as the side beacons flashed. Free, from my junk box. 5 We got a letter back from the FCC approving the monitoring system Priceless! ;-) -- Service to my country? Speed up the setting process? It would seem that yellow glue is fairly "wet" (has a lot of water content) and that you would have to keep the iron on for a fairly long time, maybe to the point of burning the veneer, before it would have any effect on the drying process. Article: 333274 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: "Gary Tayman" Subject: 59 T-Bird -- won't receive above 1500 Message-ID: Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 13:55:19 GMT I've got one here that, before spending more time on it, I want to ask about -- anyone have ideas? This radio is a 94MS, Motorola for a 59 Thunderbird. The radio appears in very good shape, although it has obviously been in the elements for awhile. The dial pointer was faded to near white; there was considerable dirt that I cleaned out -- yet the dial glass, chrome pushbuttons, and even the metal case are in excellent shape. The problem? Poor reception, and intermittent -- fixed by replacing the output IF and two weak tubes. Right now everything's fine, except the radio goes dead above 1500 kHz. Local AM 1450 comes in fine, as does a weak station at 1480. Above that, dead. I found that I can bring in reception above 1500 by adjusting the antenna trimmer. Righty-tighty, giving it more capacitance brings the reception back. However if I move the dial back to 1480, I have to reset the trimmer. The trimmer peaks at about the same setting for anywhere from 540-1450, with a slight tightening for 1480, and 1/4 to 1/2 turn for anything above that. The tuning slug appears normal, and I even checked it, just to verify that it hasn't moved fully away from the coil at 1500. It measures in the neighborhood of 300uH, and indeed moves up and down continuously with dial movement -- including above 1500. After some head-scratching, the only thing I can think of is that maybe the fixed RF caps (mica) might somehow be out of line. Tubes have been swapped with no change. Any suggestions? -- Gary E. In short, Charlie Nudo "doesn't know what he doesn't know." Addition of harmonic or inharmonic content in a music reproduction chain is not acceptable for fidelity...period. The "tubeheads" just don't get this. In a music "producer," such as electric organs, guitars, etc., harmonic AND inharmonic addition in the amplification chain is not only part and parcel of the instrument's tonal formant, but is considered desireable if it yields a wanted sound effect. Musical tonal production has nothing whatever to do with fidelity, which is the goal of a high fidelity system. The "detail" he refers to are probablby harmonic artifacts that he cannot hear with a good amplifier, and he mistakenly, through ignorance, thinks the he's hearing more of the original performance as recorded, when this is patently false. The "soundstage" thing he refers to is simply a buzzword he picked up off of some audiophool site, and he has no idea what it really means. "Colorless" amps are best, no doubt, and low distortion speaker systems are a must, but are tough to find. The lowest distortion (in terms of harmonic and inharmonic distortion products) in the bass range is still Paul Klipsch's 1940 Klipschorn design, although many direct radiator composite coned systems have come close. Example of a good, cheap "colorless" amp: Dave Hafler's DH-seires MOSFETs....great amplification without the hype and price. I've seen this before on a number of radios, and it usually wound up being an antenna load problem. I don't know what you use for a whip on your bench, but it seems at times that the small ground plane provided on such a stick causes Q problems at the top end of the MW band...making the trimmer a little too selective. I bet if you try it in a real car, the problem will go away. I line up with an RF gen and a dummy antenna C load, using shunt/series 30 pF micas in line with the gennie, and then use a garden variety automotive whip mounted on a 2' steel ground plane to check off-air performance. All goes well until it's time to reinstall into the vehicle, and resetting the trimmer is always necessary. I'd line it up for the rest of the band, have the owner reinstall it and check. The top end null may be gone when the ground plane of the whole car is in play. Rick About $65, of which he coughed up $40. If I were smarter about eBay at the time, I would've just jammed him with bad feedback and filed a counterfeiting complaint. It's not the amount of money...it's the principle. He sold me: 1.) a bootleg dupe of a documentary movie, the right to do so he did not have from the producer, using the lame excuse that he didn't see a copyright notice on the original label, the dupe of which he did on a worn out old rental VHS cassette, dubbing on a deck with worn out heads, with dropouts and goofs galore. The cheesy typewritten label, adorned with an ink jet label made from a dried out cartridge, was pretty comical. My only satisfaction on that was that was that I got his "coolsitesandsounds" eBay account shut down permanently. 2.) a fake GC Electronics 8 track alignment tape, which he runs off by the gross on misaligned, uncalibrated home machines. My example was done on a worn out Radio Trash "budget line" cartridge with a worn out splice. The alignment tones on it were a joke with no reference to anything whatsoever; the frequency response tones were all over the map. The wow and flutter caused by his honked up dubbing deck was quite obvious. He even recorded right through the track changes, using probably a "dub of a dub" as a "master." He illegally offered this cartridge to me in an "off eBay" sale after I lost the bid to someone else. It took me about 30 seconds when I got it to realize that it was a fake. Later comparison with a real alignment tape at 3¾ IPS showed that Noodles' fraud was off in every respect...azimuth, reference fluxivity and frequency response, by a huge margin. The only thing that was passible was the head hieght, since he recorded it in multitrack. He had scanned the original GC Electronics label and printed it out on an obviously newer ink jet printer. He also specified that the tape he was selling was "by GC Electronics." A warning letter this year to GC-Waldom made him take the GC Electronics name out of his fraud auctions, and then he started using the "Audiotex" trademark again to again defraud potential buyers. He has perpetrated this fraud at least 40 times that I know of, has been called on it, has placated cheated buyers by offering them a "full refund" (minus postage both ways, natch) and continue to defraud people to this day. EBay (typically) protects their fraudster sellers, while penalizing defrauded buyers who seek self help. Note how the record of all the bid retractions on his fake tape auctions disappear after 90 days, and how he's "bought" good feedback by having the defrauded buyers retract their negative feedback. A fraudster like this who commits fraud on small items will also do so on large items, although most of what he sells is basically cheap crap. Add to that his record of personal attacks, such as posting my personal information (address, phone number) on "goo goo groopz," along with his whackoid religious and political views, and you have one big piece of garbage. Note also how that, while "fraudBay" will permanently suspend a member who is a buyer that posts personal information about another member anywhere on the Web, they protected Charlie Nudo, who was at that time a "power seller," for doing the same thing. Nudo lost his "power seller" status this month, so maybe now he's more vulnerable. Note how, under pain of having his eBay fraud empire permanently wrecked, he deleted over 300 posts on "goo goo groopz." No matter...anyone with a real news service can pull them up, as well as the ones from long ago, when his psychotic personality was in full bloom. References provided upon request. There seems to be a core group of Grundig and Telefunken afficionados for those "big" radios from the '50s and '60s, but it must be pretty small. Although they were far short of anything approaching "fidelity," I remember them as good radio recievers. Is it fairly new? Elmer's = white glue = PVA = aliphatic resin. Yellow carpenter's glue is also PVA and also aliphatic, but a somewhat different formulation. PVA can also be bought which dries flexible, as used for book repair. Hide glue as already mentioned comes in granules which are soaked in water and then melted in a glue pot. It is applied hot, and gels as it cools. Below a certain moisture content it does not creep, which distinguishes it from solvent-based contact cements, and makes it ideal for veneer work. The yellow glue, when set, can be reactivated by heat, so the veneer can be "ironed" on, as was originally done with hide glue. That process was called "hammering" for obscure reasons. I presume, but I don't know, that the yellow PVA is also resistant to creep. However I do know that PVA is not approved for structural use in laminated wooden beams, because it does creep there. Very interesting and detailed accounts of all > techniques. http://www.nawcc.org > > RJ > Guys, Wow! A lot of ideas here. There are no breaks in the veneer... it just stands about one thickness high off the curve on the end shown, slightly less on the other end about 12 1/2 inches away, almost as if it came out of the factory that way. I'm really beginning to wonder if that's a possibility. The only other things I can think of, is that the supporting radiused piece was a little green and shrank as it dried, or the veneer itself stretched. The veneer lays flush with the neighboring veneer on the top and front flat surfaces, but high on the curve. And there's no evidence of similar problems on the neighboring veneer, that also follows the curve. Ken, is it really possible to shrink it with glue and strapping? I'd think there would be a pucker somewhere if I were to try the strap and glue... or does the veneer actually "shorten" using your method? I was thinking it might be possible to lift the entire top piece of veneer after stripping it, by using something like a steam iron and a putty knife, then re-laying it using straps and maybe the hide glue. Sound plausible? If the substrate has shrunk then forcing the veneer down on it may leave you with a dented looking effect. I've been there a few times. Thats a totally different scenario than the veneer actually lifting or bubbling above the substrate. And you could have both. I did one set where I had to rebuild it from the bottom side. It was a pain in the butt and came out sorta ok. My worst one was a little RCA 100 cathedral. The whole cabinet had warped out of whack and it wouldn't even sit level. The distortion in the front vs back of the arch left about 1/8 inch difference...no easy cure for that when wrapping on a new piece of veneer. Maybe you can 'fill up' the gap with yellow glue if indeed the substrate has shrunk. I tried using to foamy Gorilla Glue for that once and it didn't work out -Bill Article: 333334 of rec.antiques.radio+phono From: goodguyy@webtv.net (Ken G.) I ask because I was thinking of setting up a table this year, as opposed to being just a buyer. The web page says it starts on Friday at noon. My problem is that I work evenings and would find it hard enough to get there early enough Saturday to set up a table and things, let alone get there Friday and set up. And if you do set up on Friday morning, what do you do with your stuff overnight? I assume it just sits out in the open air, or do you have to put it all back into your vehicle and then bring it all back outside the following day? Last year I bought some stuff from one guy who was apparently sleeping in the back of his pickup truck. Is this the thing to do? And if you could only get there Sat morning, would it even be worth it, since you missed out on Friday's action? Just curious if anyone else had experience with this... The rate often quoted is what non-committed oil futures go for in the free market, but most big oil companies have their own oil fields, and produce oil for much less. They also refine their own, saving on processing and transportation costs over having a third party do it. Exxon uses mostly oil from it's own investments at a cost closer to $20 bbl., but markets it as though it was purchased at the world rate. That's were the huge profits come into play. Exxon could easily sell gas at the pumps for half what it is going for now, but why would they? People in Europe have been paying more than this for a long time." Americans are spoiled. The going price for a gallon of gasoline in Europe runs around $5.50/gallon, and we'll see that possibly by the end of summer. GOOD! Crush those SUVs and polluting gas wasters. Make people ride the train to work. WALK to the store. In other words, get of your fat, lazy asses and be responsible for once. Metrolink, the public heavy rail agency in Southern California, has just placed an emergecy order for 25 new coaches for their commuter trains. Ridership has increased about 20% since gas hit $2.50/gallon, with many trains having standees. One can commute from my location to downtown Los Angeles, approximately 90 miles one way, for $200/mo by train, where it would cost $450/mo in a gas powered SUV. Do the math. The days of gas guzzlers is over. Over at the GM dealerships, unwanted Suburbans and Escalades sit with "$5000 off the top!" placards on their windshields, and no one's biting. Of course, GM doesn't even have an economical gas-electric or diesel in their whole lineup. Duh.
