We have two main culprits, the fork tailed dronga, which I think has a related species in your area and the european bee eaters - which are not too much of a problem but I gather can catch many drones and queens in drone congregation areas. For the drongas - a dronga will usually try to sit on a branch near the hive and take the bees as they flie in - it then removes the sting by wiping it on a branch and eats the bee - together with it's load of nectar and pollen. To discourage drongas place your main apiary in the open and then place a smaller apiary under some trees - the drongas will tend to focus on the ones under the trees and leave the others alone. I have now resorted to telling the kids in the area where I keep bees that I will give them R5 a dronga - when I go around they have lots of dried drongas and I buy them from them. It makes me feel bad though as I like to think of beekeeping as being eco sensitive. Drongas are also very difficult to catch or kill as they are intelligent and rapidly learn that humans are bad and to stay 100m away from any that happen to be nearby. They also learn very fast what a gun is - and stay far away from anybody who happens to have one on them. Want to use them for next season. Here comes my experience from lat. 60 north, others I'm sure have different stories on the subject. This is not as easy as it looks. There is a problem involved with comb honey production in RR boxes, and it is swarming. Unless you have a really super flow going on (when everything works) you will have to "force" the bees to work in those plastic holders. And that means you will have to take all other supers away so they have no alternative.... Killion has written a book about the subject, I think it's called Honey in the Comb, where he describes the way to use RR supers in a large scale. Don't know if that book is still available. In short, the trick is to combine it with requeening. With a new young queen the bees will accept to be pushed down on a few RR supers without triggering the swarming. And yes, you will need to push them down on one brood box, otherwise you will end up with too much honey in the second brood box. I have tried it but given it up when the amount of honey I get is considerably smaller than with std procedure (extracting) and I don't get double price for comb honey. My experience is that I get half the crop with RR boxes compared to std supers if I want the RR boxes drawn out and filled properly. (an interesting question) The short answer is yes they can - even between very unrelated species and even between gram positive and gram negative bacteria - a bit like a human picking up a gene from a mushroom or tortoise. There are two main ways genes are spread - sexually and horizontally. Horizontal gene transfer is the very important one in bacteria. The basic genetic control in a bacterium is it's chromosome - which it can diversify in mating with closely related bacteria (usually within the same species, sometimes same genus). However - many bacteria, and some yeast, have things called plasmids which they can contain. The plasmid usually does not contain genes for essential functions - but it can give the bacterium an advantage over it's competitors. Plasmids are usually a small circular strand of DNA with one or two genes making a product and a few controlling that product. An example is one of the universal plasmids for Tetracycline resistance that have been isolated - it has a TetResistance gene and I think a regulator gene. If a bacterium dies it can burst releasing many copies of this plasmid into the environment - another bacterium may be near by and a whole range of factors lead to it either intentionall or accidentally picking up the plasmid. Now it is say TetResistant. Sometimes something goes wrong and that gene gets incorporated onto the bacterial chromosome - and you now have a permanantly resistant strain. Usually there is at least a small percentage of bacteria that have a resistance plasmid to any antibiotic you apply - these will thrive when one gives the treatment - but after one stops there is no real reason for the majority to keep the plasmid and they lose it again. BUT - if the gene incorporates onto the chromosome it takes a lot longer for it to be lost. A beautiful example of horizontal gene transfer is the sequence of genes responsible for producing Penicillin. Bacteria (Streptomycetes) and fungi (Penicillium and Aspergillus to name a few) make these products. The order of genes on the genome and even the structure of the genes are almost identical. Researchers have even shown that it is possible to take the gene sequence from a bacteria and get it to incorporate onto the chromosome of Aspergillus (a fungi) showing that the original transfer of the ability to make penicillin into these completely unrelated life forms was probably by horizontal gene transfer. So in conclusion - bacteria treat the world as their tool box - they live in an environment full of broken cells with genes floating around - the occasional 'expand your genome hippie bacteria' tries out a new gene to see what it does and sometimes the effects 'expand it's niche man!'. (After all DNA is just information - we swop ideas that let us use new products and make them, bacteria swop DNA which lets them do the same - we'll have to see who evolves the fastest.) A prophylactic treatment, by definition, protects only at the time of use to prevent infection. This type of treatment is useful there is a risk of infection from a source outside the colony, such as robbing of diseased colonies. There are pitfalls to this. If there is a source of infected honey at a time that you are not treating, your bees may be infected. In some areas this can be a serious problem. So, to answer your question, we cannot treat each generation because we must get on to honey production. Durng this time our bees are at risk of infection. If you are in a high risk area you may have problems. Good reason to have apiary inspection in your area. I don't want to make this too long but want to say that if a colony has had a bad case of AFB, or some of the colonies in an operation have, there may be constant outbreaks of AFB from infected honey in the colony or from "super infection". I know this happens to some operations, they must treat all the time to sty alive, this is where you don't want to go. A couple of months ago, a picture of my bee-stung eyes and nose made the front page of your newspaper. I'd received several hundred stings (final estimate, 400-500) during a mass attack in Bisbee. While this was an adventure I'd rather not repeat, I very much oppose the wholesale destruction of bees. And so should anyone who likes to eat. We need those bees to foster our food supply. With the Africanization of all local bees, we need domesticated hives, too. The beekeepers periodically replace aggressive queens with docile ones, and thereby reduce the aggressiveness of the bee population as a whole. The most aggressive hives will eventually be destroyed, and someday we'll learn to be more cautious around those that remain. In the meantime, folks might keep the homeopathic remedies Apis Mellifica (for allergic reactions and bee stings) and Ledum Palustre (for painful stings and bites) on hand. In August, I used 24 cents worth of those remedies to be out of pain and out of the hospital within four hours of the attack. My vital signs were normal by then, and many stinger welts had already disappeared. ``Killer'' bee attacks are a man-made problem, and should serve as a reminder that we do not know better than God how the natural world should be. Massive destruction of the Creator's handiwork will eventually lead to our own demise, as we, and now Africanized bees, are no less a part of the natural world than any other creature. So I beg you, all citizens and governing bodies in Arizona, please don't let my experience with the bees override your common sense. Think ahead, for the sake of us all, and try to imagine what future problems we might create with a temporarily satisfying solution. It can be purchased at K-Mart or other discount stores with garden centers. Comes in a tub. You apply and spread it with a spoon, knife or other flat object. Not too expensive. You can imagine the great enthusiasm I have if apitherapy could be certified a known, proven, reliable treatment for M.S., and for my great friends like Charlie Mraz and particularly Pat Wagner, I indeed hope the research proves valid. If so, can you imagine the increase in status of the American beekeeper. It would make John Glenn's Discovery "vehicle" look like a "kiddy kar". Selling bees would be much more profitable than honey. However, when I think of the involvement of the FEDERAL government and particularly the FDA, I am glad that I am OLD and won't have to fight those battles. When one considers the reticence of the FDA of approving some of the drugs used for years in Europe, not to mention an alternative for Apistan, the Bible would be akin to a pocket size dictionary compared to the thousands of pages of rules, do's and don'ts, and authorities one what have to get to sell or use bees for apitherapy. BTW, I am truly enjoying all the discussions concerning the use of antibiotics, notably Terramycin. Enough! Have a nice one! It is a snack mix. For Christmas giving you can place some in a square of colored plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon. 1 1/2 boxes Bugles 1 cup pecan pieces 1 cup walnut pieces Mix together in large bowl. In large saucepan, on medium high heat, melt 1/2 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup honey 1/4 tsp. salt Stir and boil for 5 minutes. Lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes more, stirring often. Remove from heat. Add 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp vanilla Stir. Pour over the bugle/nut mixture and mix well. Spread out on a large non stick cookie sheet till cool. Bake at 275 degrees F. for 15 minutes. Stir til all mix is coated. Bake 15 minutes more. Remove from oven. Stir. Pour mixture out onto wax paper and separate into chunks with two forks. Cool. Store in an airtight container. (For anyone who does not know, Bugles is an American snack food. Crispy corn snack. Corn Chex cereal will also work. Or a mix of corn chex, pretzels and peanuts. Whatever you have on hand) (If the honey is going to scorch, it will be during the baking. Watch closely. 10 minutes each turn may be enough. This was written at a time when comb honey in wooden sections was the norm, long before Ross Rounds were invented. They are made of a thick white latex -like substance. Yes, amateurs can make their own and I have seen it demonstrated at the National Honey Show in London a few years ago. I sure hope someone is learning from these mistakes we are making and are brave enough to share. How NOT to retrieve a colony of feral bees from an almost dead tree. Got a call from a lady that had bees in her front yard. They are living in an old black walnut tree that is almost dead. Been there for about 4 years. But she wants them out of there, NOW. The tree was located about 15 feet in front of their nice, relatively new, home. 2 feet from the edge of the single lane blacktop road. 15 feet from the other edge of the road that had a neighbors' fence about 2 feet from it. Another black walnut was 6 feet to one side. Three ornamental trees were about 6 feet to the other side. The tree was about 25 feet tall, with branches on all four sides reaching about 10 feet out. The electric wires were running through the tree about 15 - 20 feet up. More than 3/4ths of the tree was dead. This lovely young woman was about 20 years our junior. She was married to an up and coming young attorney. We were the unpaid help. At first the most important thing was to take the tree down. Dave said he didn't think it would be a good idea for us and maybe she should just kill the bees and have a professional take the tree down. Well, the professional she called said it would cost at a minimum $1,000. So could we at least save the bees. Dave said we would try. I called our state university. The professor there is attempting to breed from feral bee colonies that have survived the mite problem. The professor gave me explicit instructions on how to get the bees. Dave and I went back to the bee tree. The main opening for the bees was in a V, about 6 feet off the ground. There were numerous, about 10, other openings that were small but appeared to be used. We covered all openings, except the large one, with metal window screening. Small pieces stapled over the holes. We found the correct mesh size wire to form a cone. Made the cone diameter at the base large enough to cover the opening. Brought the opening in the cone down to about 1/4 to 1/2". Stapled the cone to the tree. Mounted an empty bee box, with drawn foundation and one frame of capped honey, in front of the cone opening. (The professor did not want any brood placed in the box, he did not want to chance crossing with any of our bees before he could send someone to pick up the bees.) Went away for two days. The bees were not supposed to be able to find the opening at the end of the cone. Most of the worker bees would be out of the hive within three days. The drones would probably be out in about 6 days. If the queen sensed the loss of her workers, she may slow down so she can fly and come out. It would be OK if we didn't get the queen, as long as we could get some drones. When we got back the bees had formed a real nice beard on the cone. We thought. Watched closer. The worker bees were going in and out of the box, getting the honey, and passing it through the cone to the inside bees. The few bees that could fit through the cone opening were taking in pollen. Called the professor. He said not to worry, but we might want to cover the cone with something. But the bees WOULD come out and move into the hive. Six weeks later, the lady called and wanted us to come and get this junk out of her front yard. If she had wanted to exterminate the bees she would have called the exterminator. Might have worked if we had covered the cone at the start. And used a bee escape on the end of the cone so the bees couldn't go back in. Hope they liked our honey. Judy in Kentucky, USA
