As a person who lives on a continent infested with aid agencies and aid recievers I can say (and this is not intended to offend anyone) that usuall the large the string of zeros in a number, the less effective it will be. In Africa, most first world countries have had some really neat schemes to industrialize communities and teach 'useful' life skills. We have had cases of the Norwgian government (they are very good at hairbrainded schemes) donating lare ponds for fishkeeping/farmin in the equatorial regions. My father was told by someone at the National Honey Show here in the UK this autumn, that some researchers in Germany have suggested that it is not the queen that fertilises her eggs but the workers. They are suggesting that the workers collect the semen from the queen and deposit it themselves, presumably in the cell, after the egg has been laid. Anyone else heard this one. If the egg is fertilized outside the queens body, rather than inside, then it's probably going to require more semen to guarantee success, so how would the queen meter out enough but not so much that she depletes her stock? But conversely you could ask, how does the queen fertilize her eggs internally, and how does the mechanism for laying drone eggs without fertilization work. Either way, she's got to have a pretty effiecient mechanism to allow fertilization with her finite supply of sperm, yet also allow fertilization to be skipped. Is there a turnstyle for the sperm, and a gate watcher that lets a few in for each egg that saunters by? What's intriguing about this idea is is that the queen could have two separate dispensing systems, one for eggs and one for sperm. There's no internal valves required to selectively let in the sperm. Eggs originate in the ovaries, a queen has many, some more than others. The ovaries develop in the first few days of queen larval development. This is a key reason why you want queens raised by populous hives with plenty of nurse bees to feed developing larva copious amounts of royal jelly, as opposed to queens raised under stressed conditions (emergency queens). The better nourished queen larva will have more and better developed ovaries than a lesser nourished larva. The second part of the egg fertilization equation is the sperm, which travels down a canal from the spermatheca. The spermatheca (soft emphasis on first syllable, hard emphasis on third syllable) is the organ where the queen stores sperm from the chosen drones of her nuptial flights. The egg from the ovary canal meets with the sperm from the spermatheca canal just before the queen places it at the bottom of the cell. Speculation is there is some sort of mechanism that is pressed by the tighter worker cell that triggers the release of sperm which does not get pressed when the queen lays in a larger drone cell. This is speculation and to my knowledge is not proven in a lab, but accounts for worker cells always containing fertilized eggs whereas drone cells contain unfertilized eggs. Perhaps the queen has actual control over the release of sperm and knows when to fertilize and when to not. Perhaps it is mechanical as speculated. I played a catch up ball game in 98, and promised myself that it would not happen next year, (1999). My 99 year supers are put together, painted, frames built and foundation installed. I have read both bee books that I received at Christmas as well as the last issues of Bee Culture as I await the next issue. (I guess it's time to subscribe to another magazine).;-) I have gone over my 98 records of weather and hive conditions. I have reviewed my mistakes and taken steps to correct them, be it more or better gear or knowledge. I reviewed my notes from a bee workshop that I took last summer. I made up a yearly beekeeping journal. Each month has an entry for an appropriate action if any. It also contains a daily section for taking notes, as well as graph paper for recording hive configuration and apiary layout. I keep track of how long the electric fencer batteries last. I continue to keep weather records in order to help evaluate wintering over colonies. Last week I sent a check to the Secretary of commerce here in NH to register a trade name for my apiary. My wife and I will be attending the local bee club meeting in January. I removed the electric fencer from it's protective box in the apiary and will change a couple of resistors to make it a 12 volt system rather than a 6 volt system. ( 12 volt batteries are much easier to charge and to obtain). I have 10 nuc boxes built, framed, and foundation installed, and ready to go. I have some meds on hand, enough for the Spring anyway, and I know when and how to use them. I made up a growth plan. This means how much growth can I deal with in the number of colonies I own. I allowed some room in the plan for swarm traps that I will place in a couple of likely trees. I have ordered some nucs from a local supplier, and will call a queen breeder with an order this week for the Spring season. So now I can take it easy and chat on the radio with folks around the world. BTW, do we have any Ham Radio operators here on the BEE-l who would like to chat? I have all band capability but 160 meters. How about meeting on 15 meters on Sunday at 18:00 UTC? Here I am, looking for more advice. Thanks in advance. Our beekeeping club has pretty much decided how to handle our local school and kids requests for bee information. And the local 4-H ers want to get in on it too. Here's what we are planning: The local conservation officer has agreed to allow us to place a hive or two on the local "Conservation Outdoor Classroom" site. The site is a couple acres behind the local high school. The hives will be somewhat secluded to try to prevent vandalism. We plan on, eventually, building an information board with pictures, etc. The kids visit the site and learn about conservation efforts, usually by the busload. Maybe someday, even an observation hive. I spoke with the local 4-H agent. I suggested that the 4-H'ers use the hive as their 4H project. They would have to meet a year round thing, so I suggested they must help various beekeepers maintain hives, paint hives, build hives and frames, over the non beeraising times. Also, many 4H parents won't bee too happy to invest a coupla hundred dollars in a hive with no chance for a good return in the first year. (As you know, most 4H projects are sold at the end of the summer. Sometimes for a real good profit) Here's the question. Which texts are the best to use for the 4Hers to learn about beekeeping. As beginners they probably need to learn about bees, but not just that. And the text should be easy enough for about a 10 year old to read and understand. It has to have beginner beekeeping stuff in it also. I would like the beeclub to purchase the books and lend them out. Hopefully any of the kids that decide to go on to beekeeping will need more advanced books. Any suggestions or recommendations? I have read about most of the books out there. And even own about 4 or 5. But not sure about the beginners from this standpoint. Thanks, again. He speculates that queen cells do not contain this inhibiting stimulus of drone cells and therefore eggs laid in queen cells get fertilised. The exact mechanism of sperm release is still unclear. Besides the hypotheses Aaron Morris mentions (pressure), there are two main other hypotheses: According to Bresslau (1905) and Adam (1912) the muscles of the sperm pump allow or inhibit sperm release. According to Flanders (1950) the sperm pump is just a valve that opens when an egg passes by, and it is the release of fluid from the spermathecal gland that enables fertilisation. If the gland's fluid is not released the egg remains unfertilised. There are almost three methods of handling the problem. You can use a special bacteria solution (undangerous for man) which one sprays on the combs and which will kill the wax-moths selectivly. Secondly one can use sulfurdioxid (burnig sulfur) or acetic acid (evaporation) for fighting the moths on the combs. Some spare-time beekeepers store the combs in daylight with a lot of fresh air or professional beekeepers in a special cooling room. It is the ovarioles which vary from queen to queen, ranging from "260 to 373 in one study on 280 queens (Eckert 1934)" (from _Queen_Rearing_and_Bee_Breeding_ Laidlaw and Paige). (The quotes around "'at will'" are theirs, not mine). L&P include in their book a picture of a frame of drone brood containing worker pupae: "Eggs were laid by a mated queen that was confined to one drone comb." This suggests to me that to fertilize or not is under the queen's control and not due to the mechanics of cell size, but the experts don't agree or are not sure and I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. I also spent some time last night rereading sections of Steve Taber's _Breeding_Super_Bees_ for some of these answers. Taber's book offers interesting insights into the quantity of sprem passed from drone(s) to queens, potential for the amount of sperm a queen is capable to store and ACTUAL amounts finally stored by a properly mated queen. He states that a properly mated queen will store more sperm in her spermatheca if the queen is promptly returned to a hive environment. It is unclear why this is so, possible reasons include exercise by the queen and a possibility that workers may play a role. I mention the possible role of workers here as perhaps a grain of truth to the rumor picked up by Madeleine's father which started this whole thread in the first place. Both books mentioned in this post are highly recommended. Sue Cobey's class (Queen Rearing) is offered annually at Ohio State University on or around Memorial Day weekend and is deserving of the highest praises one can give. I remember a yard of bees that almost all died when tracheal mites were first introduced, that sat almost all summer in central NY, with almost no wax moth damage to the comb. Here in South Carolina, the brood combs, at least, would have been utterly destroyed. The best advice that is always given is to keep the bees strong and in good shape. If a colony is weak, they will come under attack immediately in hot weather. You will see the moths hanging around the entrances in the evening. Strong hives pretty much keep them out, though a few get in to lay some eggs. Strong hives will toss out the worms after they hatch, as well. When a colony becomes weak, or dies out in hot weather, you must recover the comb quickly, and either get it onto another hive, strong enough to clean it up, or freeze or fumigate it. In cold weather, wax moths will not enter, although a box of brood comb, where they have already started, and have a lot of insulating webbing, will permit the worms to clump together and keep working at a slower pace through winter. I think northern winters will kill them though. Some South Carolina beekeepers put out traps for the moths. I don't remember the recipe for the bait, but the trap is designed pretty much like a yellow jacket trap, made from a plastic soda bottle or milk jug. Keith Delaplane has done quite a bit of work on wax moths, and his articles have been in the American Bee Journal. Search back issues for more info. A lady near here rain a business for quite a few years, raising wax moths for bait. She bought honey from me as part of their feed. She had a tractor trailer reefer box lined with shelves, and raised 'em by the millions. The trailer was kept at about 95 degrees year around. I had thought about trying to do this myself, as the market for them is good. But she has quit, telling me that the profit wasn't what it appeared. The thing that always stops me, when I consider this, is the labor cost of counting out 500 worms at a time. Fall was so warm that I was becoming concerned that we would not have any real winter. When winter is warm, the plants stay tender, and spring freezes are devastating. But this cold spell is a relief. It will give the peaches their needed chill hours for good bloom, and hopefully getting the cold when we should will mean that we won't get it in the spring, when we shouldn't........ I've been sick with bronchitis, since Christmas, so it was an ideal time to catch up on these books, which have been in the works for years. Now I'm anxious to get back into the bees. It warmed into the fifties with bright sunshine a couple days ago, and the bees at the shop were carrying lots of yellow pollen. I see blooming dandelions here and there, so spring is already pushing. Steve, I don't have good pictures, but the black bee (mellifera mellifera) is still abundant on many islands in the South Pacific. The Europeans brought them to the islands a few centuries ago, and only in this century have some of the populations been mixed or replaced with better bees. I worked with the black bee in the Fiji Islands in the mid-1980's, and found it to be a nasty, defensive bee. The bees run all over the combs when smoked. The queens will even run out of the brood nest, making it difficult to requeen. Their colonies are smaller and less productive than the Italian. It was the first bee here in this country and have heard beekeepers of my grandfathers generation speak favorably of it. The trait of leaving the combs when disturbed worked well with the method of keeping bees in "gums". And some say they stored much honey.
