Hello,

The Alternative Farming Systems Information Center will, on
request, perform and distribute specialized database searches free
of charge. (Lengthy or complicated searches are done on a cost
recovery basis.) In doing searches, we usually use the database
created here at the library, AGRICOLA, but we also have access to
other resources, databases and contacts should they be required.

I am not sure what literature is available on your topic, but we
would be happy to try a search. Just let me know if you are
interested (or would like other information about our Center).
Please include your surface mail address as some materials are not
yet available electronically.

Sincerely,
Mary Gold, Assistant Coordinator

Hello Mr. London.
First let me say thank you for all the stuff you forward to
SANET. It is most interesting.
Now for your question. Do you want to grow soybeans in a
certified organic system? or are you wanting to grow them in
an ecologically sound manner. Donny Fulks here in Virginia is
doing soybeans and I think his system would qualify for the
Virginia organic certification program. I can get his address
for you. There are a number of private agricultural
consultants who are working with farmers all over the US on the
production of soybeans in an ecologically sound system. Many
of these may also qualify for organic certification. When I
get home tonight, I will look for the address of the Organic
Trade Association (formerly the Organic food producers
association of North America). This group should be able to
put you in touch with a large number of farmers who are growing
soybeans organically.
In the meantime you could call Carl Luebben of Agricultural
Consulting Services, Mount Crawford Virginia 703/828-6260.
Neal Kinsey of Missouri and Don Shriefer of Demotte, Indiana
both work with Soybean producers. There are others. You can
get more names from the offices of ACRES, U.S.A. 2617-C
Edenborn Ave., Metairie, La 70002, 504/889-2100

Don't know whether this helps or not. There are a lot of
organic soybeans being produced in this country. Let me know
if you want me to track down addresses and phone numbers for
any of these people. My agricultural files are mostly at
home. Good luck. Margaret Merrill

Hello Lawrence,
In response to "who am I" -- I am both a librarian and an
agriculturalist having master's degrees in both fields. I like
to think of myself as an information specialist in sustainable
agriculture. My ag degree thesis was on ecologically sound
agriculture as an alternative for farmers--University of
Georgia, 1979. Since then I have been active in the
sustainable ag groups wherever I have been, Virginia for nearly
10 years now. However a lot of my original contacts were
midwestern and I have maintained those in so far as I could.
As far as having my archives on the sunSITE, that would be
fine. I am not sufficiently adept electronically to do it
myself at this point, nor are any of my records in electronic
format--no one was really using word processors when I did my
initial research and I have not gone back to put them on disk.
However, I am willing to consider doing that if you want the
bibliography, names of consultants, etc. We can explore this.
Just learned that the Fulks, whom I mentionned in my first
message, will be putting in 600 acres of organic soybeans this
coming year. It seems that there is a substantial export
market for organic soybeans.
Must quit, the library will open shortly and there is much to
do before then. Take care. Margaret
