Ok, I can only post as an undergraduate who has spent the past semester working on a plant pathology project. If you want REAL detail you probably should talk to professors in the Plant Pathology department on your own campus. Hypersensitive response appears to be a very basic way of how plants deal with pathogens. However the mechanisms behind hypersensitive response and resistance are still not clear. (Resistance genes are difficult to isolate and clone for various reasons.) Basically the cells surrounding the infection die. As part of this, phytoalexins are produced. There are more questions than answers as to how this happens. What is known is that resistance works on a gene for gene basis. In other words, each virulence gene in a pathogen is counteracted by a single resistance gene in the host.
