I will clearcut approximately 80% > of the tract. I would say that clearcutting 80% of the tract is probably an unwise move, from a Permaculture point of view. I suggest planning exactly what you want to do with the space (with the aid of a Permaculture designer, perhaps) first. Then cutting each tree only when you are ready to do something else with the land it's growing on. But then I am both unqualified, and inexperienced in Permaculture, and I may be talking rubbish. -- Nikki Locke,Trumphurst Ltd.(PC & Unix consultancy) nikki@trmphrst.demon.co.uk trmphrst.demon.co.uk is NOT affiliated with ANY other sites at demon.co.uk. --- * Origin: [via Psychotronic BBS = Durham, NC = 919-286-4542]sustag- (1:3641/1) @PATH: 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (212) Wed 7 Dec 94 5:02 By: Lawrence F. E.g. Do you want sun or shade on the pond? (Oxygen solubility is very temperature dependent. Similarly you may want a windbreak to keep the wind from cooling the pond. If boarding horses, you may want patches of shade, May cut the forest in strips. Finally to maximize value, you may want to selective cut the forest now. This takes more work on your part, but can give you a huge increase in production. In NC, you have the possibility of managing a woodlot for various hardwoods. In some cases you may want to take out a third of the trees, then remove the limbs from the lower 30 feet of existing trees, and let them grow for another 20 years. Veneer companies drool over logs that have 4-8 inches of knotless wood on the outside. Go to your county extension agent, District Ag. agent, whatever, and talk to him. He probably has a zillion handouts.
