Scientists Denounce USDA Approval of Gene-Altered Squash To: National Desk, Science Writer Contact: Margaret Mellon or Jane Rissler, 202-332-0900 both of the Union of Concerned Scientists WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 -- The Union of Concerned Scientists denounced today's decision by the Department of Agriculture to approve commercialization of the Upjohn Co.'s genetically engineered squash. The yellow crookneck squash, which is genetically altered to resist infection by two plant viruses, will be the first crop grown on a commercial scale that is genetically engineered to be virus-resistant. "USDA should not have approved the Upjohn squash for commercial use," said Dr. Margaret Mellon, director of the Agriculture and Biotechnology Program at UCS. "The squash raises serious environmental concerns that were not adequately addressed by the USDA." Commercial planting of the squash could create new and worse plant viruses, convert squash crops into weeds, and transfer new genes into wild and weedy relatives of squash. A recent study by two Michigan State University virologists showed that a viral gene spliced into a plant can recombine with genes infecting viruses to create new viral strains. "USDA has conducted a shoddy risk assessment," said Dr. Jane Rissler, a senior staff scientist at UCS. "Today's approval sets a dangerous precendent for the future, because it will likely set the standard for other genetically engineered products." "If this is going to be the government's approach to genetically engineered crops, it is a bleak day for the environment," said Mellon. USDA approval will allow the squash to be sold in the marketplace as food. Last month the Food and Drug Administration pronounced the squash safe as a food. As a result, this will be the first genetically engineered whole food to go into the food supply unlabelled. Drs. Mellon and Rissler recently completed a report, "Perils Amidst the Promise: Ecological Risks of Transgenic Crops in a Global Market," that details a number of the ecological risks of virsus-resistant crops. The Union of Concerned Scientists is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing responsible public policies in areas where technology plays a critical role. The Agriculture and Biotechnology Program at UCS promotes sustainable agriculture and evaluates the role of biotechnology in agriculture, including risks and benefits. -30- ------- end of forwarded message ------- --- * Origin: [via Psychotronic BBS = Durham, NC = 919-286-4542]SunSITE (1:3641/1) @PATH: 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (239) Tue 13 Dec 94 10:12 By: Jim Dixon To: Lawrence London Re: NDN: Anyone reading posts from alt.sustainable agriculture in SUST_AG St: Rcvd ----------------------------------------------------------------------
