We have a quarter section of land about 100 miles east of Edmonton, ALberta, Canada. It has a continental type climate and I believe it is zone 3. The soil is light. I am looking for alternative small plot crops to grow in place of the usual canola, wheat, barley etc. Any legal suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance for any info. --- Maximus 2.01wb * Origin: Vermilion Lighthouse, Vermilion, AB (1:3413/107) @PATH: 3413/107 1000 3615/50 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (492) Fri 23 Dec 94 11:14 By: Helen Fleischer To: All Re: high low tech ---------------------------------------------------------------------- @MSGID: 1:261/1137@fidonet.org cb8d8b3d Well, I admit to being eccentric, but in case there are other eccentrics out there, I'll pass on an interesting experiment I made this morning. You see I have one of those old Atlas pasta machines. You know the nice chrome ones that roll out the dough and cut noodles, but don't do anything else like make ravioli, etc. I recently decided I wasn't going to be using it to make noodles any more, so I moved it to my studio to use it for rolling Sculpey and Fimo. I've been enjoying it for that, but that's not the news. The news is I kept looking at that noodle cutter half and thinking how much it looks like the guts of a paper shredder. Well today I took a local tabloid newspaper I know uses soy inks, pulled off a sheet of 4 pages, folded it on the existing fold and again parallel to that so I had a 6 inch wide piece and ran it through the wider of the two noodle cutters. In a matter of seconds I hand a nice handful of shredded paper to use as bedding in my worm bin. Did the whole darn paper like that in a matter of minutes, after moving the machine to the corner of the counter and putting a catch basket under the overhanging edge of the counter. Filled the basket right up. So, if you have a worm bin, or any other uses for shredded newspaper, now you have another reason to haunt yard sales for old pasta machines. ... Where am I going? And what am I doing in this handbasket? * Q-Blue 1.0 --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: * MetroNet * Columbia, MD * (1:261/1137.0) @PATH: 261/1137 1023 396/1 3615/50 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (496) Thu 22 Dec 94 18:54 By: Sheryl Moore To: John Hartman Re: Re: Indoor Gardening ---------------------------------------------------------------------- @MSGID: 1:147/180@fidonet.org cb1504de well,i had a similiar experience, only it was growing okra in my front garden,by a major hwy..it was just getting ready to bloom, and i was out hoeing it,and all of a sudden i heard brakes squealing.this fool backs up and roars up the driveway, and jumps out of his car,and yells,"you sure have a lot of nerve, growing that stuff right by the highway!"upon which,i asked him since when did it become a crime to grow okra?he insisted it was marijuana, and he was going to report me to the police. i told him grab a leaf, the cops are 2 miles west.on hearing that he said,is it REALLY okra? i said yes,now get the hell off my place. he left. what he did not know was a few years earlier, when we had bought the place,it had been vacant for 5 years, and had weeds 9 ft tall...including 4 patches of marijuana that we found when we were cutting the weeds down.we called the cops and they removed them all,so i doubt if they would have believed the guy after that.^[[D! --- FidoPCB v1.5 beta-'j' * Origin: MEDICUS BBS in Edmond, OK 405-478-8250 (1:147/180) @PATH: 147/180 20 3615/50 3641/1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (517) Thu 22 Dec 94 1:34 By: JAMES ROWE To: JOHN HARTMAN Re: Re: Indoor Gardening ---------------------------------------------------------------------- @EID:4716 F5960C40 -=> Quoting John Hartman to James Rowe <=- JH> Indoor gardening? Well that sort of harassment is intolerable, but also to be expected. We live in a society which rejects anything which is slightly off center from the norm, even though we claim to be accepting of everyone. I bet Mr. Officer was surprised to find out that you had legitimate veggies growing. Seems a shame to be bothered about your veggies, but I guess until we change the way w act towards each other that this sort of thing is bound to happen. I hope you're not permanently discouraged. But what I am promoting is farming on a large scale. This is to be set up as a not for profit organizati which is concerned mainly with providing food and home to those who do not fit elsewhere. ...
