How's about a we-do-all-our-produce-buying-there urban dweller?

We've shopped the Palo Alto Farmer's Market (organized, can-you-believe-it
by the _Senior's Center_ and before that, the San Francisco Farmer's Market.
Both are serious markets, mostly producers selling their own products.

What we look for is quality and variety. The producers at the Palo Alto
market in particular are very agressive in adding new varieties to their
offerings. After that, pleasant people, although that's generally easy
to do.

What we avoid are "tourist" or crafty items. We are shopping for the
table.

Some local merchants in my town are going to be working with area farmers
to set up a farmers' market and tie it in with promotion of village
shopping. We _do_ have a few plazas around, but the downtown business
development group is in the 'old' main street.

What has been your experience (as a weekend traveller, tourist, or
rural-area dweller) with farmers' markets? Which ones did you like and
what were they composed of? Likewise, which ones were not worth your time?
If your ever took part in one, what recommendations would you have to a
small town trying to do it?

Location will be an important criterion (many people like to walk to
market), but it will not be the most important. To be successful the
market needs committed vendors. Farmers who will show up every week with
high quality produce. The first time a customer shows up and finds no
fresh eggs on the market that is the last time he or she will come.
Similarly, if the quality fluctuates, then they go back to the supermarket.
