From karenm@vt.edu Mon Jan 12 11:42:08 1998 Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 08:18:31 +0500 From: Karen Mundy To: sanet-mg@shasta.ces.ncsu.edu I am reading a manuscript written by a retired professor from the Dept. of Ag. and Applied Econ. at Va. Tech. It's a history of the dept. and pretty interesting. The most interesting piece, though, is his discussion about the criticism leveled at universities in the 1970's that they were working too closely with industry at the expense of the family farm. He sites "Hard Tomatoes, Hard Times" as an example of the problem. This book is most interesting--if you can find a copy. Like several publications that criticize USDA and the universities, it was not popular. Perhaps, we should do a bit more looking back at the criticism leveled at research and remind our legislators that we've been seeing these changes occurring for a long time, but no one pays attention to "the voice crying in the wilderness." k.
