From flylo@txcyber.com Sat Jun 5 12:11:27 1999 Date: Sat, 5 Jun 1999 06:18:30 -0500 From: Martha Wells To: "sanet-mg-digest@ces.ncsu.edu" Subject: livestock gardening (common sense) books: If everyone is going to toss out their most useful books, I have one I wouldn't be without. Carla Emery's Old Fashioned Recipe Book. A large section on raising chickens (and most any other farmyard critter) naturally. Huge garden/ harvest / canning sections, and about every other topic you could imagine. Runs about $25 in most places, and it's massive (890+ pages) Because of the Y2K topics this book may be hard to find. Homesteader's Connection and AlpineHaus both normally stock it. I can get the info if anyone is interested. Note: A couple of folk wrote directly to me after my chicken lament and said they'd tried raising chickens w/out commercial feeds and had poor results. You can do it but it's tough to find all the things they may need. Instead, try game bird starter. The formula is pretty much the same as chicken starter, but turkeys and game birds can't stand the medications, so it's unmedicated. The cost will be a bit more. Right now I'm on a new 'thread'.,, realizing that grasshoppers are inactive at night, I've been trying to determine where all mine are going. Said that they sleep on the tips of grass stems, but I can't seem to find any. could it be possible they're all sleeping somewhere together? (Thinking of ways to net them for the chickens.)
