Subject: Support your local Farms programs

HI all,

There are three such programs in California. Out here they are looked upon
as "regional marketing programs"; the theory is making farming lucrative by
creating a higher local demand will keep the land agricultural instead of
going to developers. Part of the marketing strategy is to develop and
support direct marketing opportunities like farmers markets and CSA.

In the Placer county program their is a strong educational component.
Educating consumers about seasonality and eating fresh, local products and
educating children about where food comes from.

The programs can be reached through their respective extension offices:

Select Sonoma - Sonoma County, CA, coastal N. CA
cesonoma@ucdavis.edu

Nevada Gold and PlacerGROWN - N.CA foothills
ceplacer@ucdavis.edu
cenevada@ucdavis.edu

Grants and seed monies from the counties involved as well as sustainable ag
programs helped with development of logo, point-of-sale materials, program
tools etc. Membership dues and sale of t-shirts etc. provide on-going
funding. In kind resources include desk space, computer access, and
telephone provided either through the county govt., Cooperative extension, or
the local Chamber of Commerce.
