Someone asked for the address of NCAMP, the National Coalition against the Misuse of Pesticides. It is: NCAMP 701 E. St. SE Washington, DC 20003 (202) 543-5450 Memberships range from $15/yr (low income) on up, and they offer a variety of free and pay-for publications. Their booklet states: "NCAMP is a non-profit membership organization that was formed to serve as a national network committed to pesticide safety and the adoption of alternative pest management strategies which reduce or eliminate a dependency on toxic chemicals..." I found out about NCAMP when trying to deal with an invasion of ants in my house; I was terrified that they were carpenter ants, but was unsure how to identify them or what to do about them. I spoke with a very knowledgeable person on the phone, who directed me to the local insect-identifying HQ of the MD Cooperative Extension Service and sent me literature on ants and some other useful information. Other than sending in a membership fee, that's all the contact I've had with them so far. But that may change soon: the ants are back (it's an annual event :^<), the boric-acid approach is inadequate, and NCAMP has a list of local environmentally-conscious exterminators... Yuck.
