This file is HLP_P53.TXT - from ..\DNA_MUTATIONS\P53\PROGRAM. The files in this subdirectory hold (i) the database itself and (ii) the program for analysis of the database that is described in Cancer Research, 54, 4454-4460, 1994. The database has been updated as of April 1997. ********************************************************************** A PASSWORD IS REQUIRED TO USE THE ANALYZE.EXE PROGRAM. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE THE DATABASE ITSELF AS A SEPARATE FILE. ********************************************************************** The files are compressed to speed up transfer time via FTP, and to save disk space when sending floppy disks. The files ending in "EXE" are self- extracting archives. This means when you execute them (by typing their names) many files will "pop out", and you will have quite a few files after uncompression. You will need about 7M of free disk space to install the programs. There are two files in ..\P53\PROGRAM: HLP_P53.TXT - this file. P53FILE1.EXE - compressed, self-extracting archive. P53FILE2.exe - " If you got these files via the INTERNET using FTP and they don't work properly (typically they will not uncompress), you probably did not transfer the files correctly. These files are BINARY and must be transferred as such. Please see your system manager for details about binary FTP, I cannot help you at my end with your file transfers. When you download the program from a mainframe to your PC, remember to SET FILE TYPE TO BINARY if you are using KERMIT. Whatever you are using to get the file from the mainframe to the PC, it must be done as a binary file transfer. To run this program, you will need an IBM-compatible machine running MS-DOS with a 386 or greater processor. The program will not even load on a 286. At least 4 MB of RAM are needed, otherwise you will get a pesky "OUT OF MEMORY" error with some routines. A standard VGA monitor and card are required (640 x 480 resolution). Users are strongly urged to use this program with a mouse, I guarantee, you will hate this program without a mouse. Some settings in your CONFIG.SYS file must be changed to: FILES=50 BUFFERS=20 (greater than 50 FILES or greater the 20 BUFFERS is OK) KNOWN PROBLEMS: Gateway 2000 machines running an ATI graphics card with a local bus show unstable behavior after running a graphics routine. A BIOS upgrade is available from Gateway or from myself. May I suggest: 1) Make a directory on the hard disk called P53 (use the DOS MD command). 2) Change the current directory to C:\P53 by entering: CD C:\P53 3) Copy all files to the C:\P53 subdirectory (use the DOS COPY command). 4) Unpack the compressed files by entering: P53FILE1 P53FILE2 5) The following files should be present after uncompressing: analyze.exe the main program config.fp configuration file for ANALYZE.EXE program dge0906.stx font dge1106.stx font dge1108.stx font dge1608.stx font dge1609.stx font driver2.plb printer support genpd.app printer support help_p53.dbf on-line help help_p53.fpt on-line help help_p53.txt ASCII version (text) of on-line help hg-fp.exe mutational spectra calculation program hlp_p53.txt this file main_p53.cdx index for the P53 database main_p53.dbf the P53 database p53user.dbf used to determine state of last program p53user.fpt used to determine state of last program sample1.frt sample report sample1.frx sample report sample2.frt sample report sample2.frx sample report tutorial.txt short tutorial file 5) After decompressing the files P53FILE1.EXE and P53FILE2.EXE, they should be deleted from the hard disk. Please keep a copy of the compressed files on floppy disks in case something bad happens. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The program is started by entering: ANALYZE On-line help is obtained by using the F1 key, or by selecting OPTIONS\HELP from the main menu. Please note that a text version of the on-line help is provided as help_p53.txt and it can be printed out and used as a manual. Printing out the TUTORIAL.TXT file and using it with the program is recommended also. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Digitally yours, Neal Cariello
