EJVC: Basic facts and Philosophy ____________________________________ The _Electronic Journal on Virtual Culture_ is published by Arachnet. Virtual culture is computer-mediated human experience/behavior/thought/meaning/action/interaction, such as electronic mail, conferences, and journals; information distribution /retrieval; the construction and visualization of images/representations/models of reality and/or worlds; and global connectivity. The purpose of the refereed journal is to foster, encourage, advance, and communicate scholarly thought, (including analysis, evaluation, and research) in multiple disciplines about virtual culture. EJVC will observe the canons of quality scholarship, optimal flexibility, maximal functional standardization, and minimal hyperstandardization. -. No subscription fee for the Journal is contemplated, and no one is authorized to sell it under any circumstances. EJVC Format: EJVC will emphasize immediacy and currency through multiple, open threads, strings, and series in the publication and distribution of refereed articles as units and sets as appropriate. Any given document/object of EJVC will have multiple designators to facilitate structured access in different contexts for different purposes: A volume/ issue/supplement number, appropriate designations of dynamic threads/strings/series, and instructions for computer network retrieval, including hosts, filenames, and path names. The first refereed object released in a given month will be assign a volume/issue number, and any object within a given month subsequent to the first object shall be assigned a number as a supplement for cataloging /indexing/reference. At least one supplement per month will be issued in a flexible format as "The Cyberspace Monitor". "The Cyberspace Monitor" shall include unrefereed content such as "Letters to the Author" (with replies by authors of refereed articles), comments/reviews on/of other aspects, objects, states, conditions of virtual culture. Such comments and/or reviews may pertain to electronic conferences, electronic journals, networked information systems/archives/tools, media, software, relevant print (books, periodicals, magazines, et cetera), and VC humor. EJVC will have two main strands of objects, one for refereed single/multiple articles and another one with content such as comments, reviews, announcements, and news. The official language of the EJVC will be English, but translations into other languages may be approved by special arrangement. ______________________________________________ 2. Submission Procedures and Author Guidelines ______________________________________________ EJVC will seek established authors with reputations as scholars/experts and, also, promising authors who have notable ideas. Submissions may be made on a continuing basis. Deadlines for submissions shall be the first of the month preceding the next issue--for consideration in that issue. The deadline for the submission of manuscripts for the first issue is February 1, 1993. -.Articles should be 1000 lines or less, including notes and bibliography Submissions will be made to the Editor-in-Chief Ermel Stepp M034050@MARSHALL or M034050@MARSHALL.WVNET.EDU or Co-Editor Diane Kovacs dkovacs@kentvm or dkovacs@kentvm.kent.edu The EJVC will issue articles as units and in sets, commencing on March 15, 1993, with multiple cataloging/indexing specifications, including volume, issue, supplement, thread/theme/serial code, and network retrieval specifications. - Articles will start with an abstract/description (< about 200 words>> Paragraphs and pages will be numbered Internal/in-text citation will be provided Electronic references shall be cited as such Blank line separators between paragraphs will be used instead of indentations Substantive endnotes may be use -. Issues of EJVC will not exceed 5000 lines of 60 characters. -. Articles in EJVC will not exceed 1000 lines of 60 characters. -. All submissions and communication will be by electronic mail. -. All submissions will be given at least three blind reviews by a jury of referees. -. The EJVC will publish certain information in every issue, including, for example, ownership, editorial staff, editorial guidelines, disclaimer, and copyright statement, and subscription instructions. -. No print version of the EJVC is contemplated, but may be made available in print at the discretion of libraries. EJVC Styles: EJVC will use multiple styles, flexible among objects but consistent within any given object. Any recognized standard of style will be acceptable, with APA, modified for ASCII, the preferred style, allowing for creative styling essential to the integrity of the object. Archiving/Retrieval/Subscription (FTP Access, Gopher Access, Listserv Subscription Options) ________________________________________________________ The main archives of EJVC will be available from LISTSERV@KENTVM or LISTSERV@KENTVM.KENT.EDU and via anonymous ftp to REFMAC.KENT.EDU in the Pub/ejvc EJVC will be archived at multi-continental sites, including libraries, ERIC, multiple computer information systems in cyberspace: LISTSERVs, multiple FTP sites, gopherspace, WAIS, Usenet, and World Wide Web. Appropriate instructions for the retrieval of each EJVC document/file/object, including a cumulative table of contents by authors/titles, abstracts, and full text of single articles and sets of articles will be disseminated to editors, users, and the public via systematic postings and announcements.
