Frazzled fragments and lousy leftovers The files in this directory represent incomplete or prototype imple- mentations of various software products. They may be useful as is, or may serve as a basis for understanding various system services. READDG is a program to read tapes written by a Data General RDOS system. We used it to pull some needed files off the DG's backup tapes after the system was scrapped. VMT is a fully functional prototype for reading and writing tapes in IBM VM/SP format. In addition to handling the ASCII/EBCDIC trans- lation and blocking/deblocking, it presents a user interface identical to that on the VM system. As I say, it was a prototype and runs slowly, but it *does* work. We were planning on redoing it in BP2 + Macro, but removed our IBM system first. This needs BP2 to rebuild, since tape records consome the entire program region under Basic-Plus. DPT is a quick hack of VMT to handle simple EBCDIC blocked tapes. It is included as an example of what you can get from VMT with a bit of work with an axe. NPRREQ and NPRSRV are a team of programs, which, if completed, would have allowed semi-transparent printing on queues on a different RSTS/E system as long as both systems were on DECNET. They 'sort of work' now, but some print options, as well as any sort of user interface, are lacking. They do show how to pass parameters to the PBS SYS() calls, and include a parser for the print options. MAIUAF is a finished program for automatically adding usernames to the DECmail-11 username file. Run as part of a nightly batch job, it scans the disk structure to construct a new NAMES.DAT file. The existing MAIL NAMES.DAT file should be renamed to SNAMES.DAT before runnin this program. Entries in SNAMES.DAT override infor- mation gleaned from the disk structure. Additional fields for the INFO utility are generated as well.
