M A I L MAIL is a utility for sending messages to other users. Only the user specified can read the message, who can then delete it, hold it, or send an acknowledgement. Future fa- cilities may include sending a single message to several users. Presently the commands are very simple. To run the mail facility, just enter: PDS> MAIL ---- If any mail has been sent to you, the statement: <<< YOU HAVE MAIL >>> will appear. MAIL will then prompt: Command: (Type HELP for help) If you have mail, type "READ"; to send a message type "SEND". For a list of users to whom you may send mail, type "USERS". If you wish to READ your mail, MAIL will present each message, including the person from whom, and the day and time on which it was sent. You will then be asked: Disposition: You must type at least 4 letters of the following words. Their meanings are: HOLD - Leave message in mail box to be read again. ACKNOWLEDGE - Send a message to the sender which will indicate that you have received the message. The sender's message will be deleted. REPLY - Like ACKNOWLEDGE except that you may include a message as a reply. RECEIVED - This message will be deleted. DELETE - Same as RECEIVED. FILE - You will be asked for a file name and the mes- sage will be copied verbatim to the file. REPEAT - Repeat the message again. (For slow readers on fast terminals!) In any case, if there is more mail, it will be present- ed one message at a time as above. Type control Z (^Z) to any prompt in order to exit MAIL. In sending mail, note that the "subject" is included in any reply or acknowledgement from the receiver, so make it recognizable. A special "break" feature is available while typing the text of your message. Any line beginning with ">" will be checked for a "break" command. The commands im- plemented at this time are: 1. >FILE - You will be asked for the file name of a file which will be included in the text of the mes- sage. At this time, the text will be ended by the end of this file. This feature allows the use of the various editors to prepare mail. 2. >REPEAT - The entire message up to the last line will be re-typed. You may then continue entering text. 3. >HELP - Will print out the available commands. 4. >anything else - An informative message will indi- cate that the ">" in column 1 won't be accepted as text.
