PDP-11 RUNOFF 11-MAR-81 PDP-11 RUNOFF ------------- Original Author: L. Wade Revision Date: 2 June 77 Program Version: Reese1 Reese Modifications by F. Borger NOTICE: This memorandum describes a program which Digital Equipment Cor poration has no committment to offer or support at this time. This memorandum is, however, believed to b e an accu- rate description of RUNOFF. This version of RUNOFF has been significantly modified at Micha- el Reese Medical Center. Be advised th at significant differ- ences occur between this v ersion of RUNOFF and any of the pro- fligate DEC versions currently available. The experienced RUNOFF user will also find of interest two other programs on the current system. RNP is a runo ff pre-processor which has the capability of merg- ing standard runoff sources with optional input either from sec- ondary input files or from the terminal. It is especially use- ful for generating form letters and memos, etc. TWOPAGE is a BASIC program which lets y ou split runoff output into two files, with succe ssive pages in alternate files. The two files tha n can be printed at the Centronics line printer or the Diablo letter quality printer to produce documents printed on both sides of the paper. The user in- cludes not only textual ma terial, but also case and formatting information. RUNOFF then takes the file and reproduces it onto the line printer, teletype or other file to produce a final copy or final file image. It performs the formatting and c ase shift- ing as direct ed, and will also perform line justification, page numbering and titling, etc., as desired. The principal benefit of s uch a program is that files prepared for use with it may be edited and corre cted easily. Small or large amounts of material may be added or deleted, and unchanged material need not be retyped. After a set of changes, the pro- gram may be operated to produce a new copy which is properly paged and formatted. Docu mentation may thus be updated as ne- cessary without requiring extensive retyping. 1.2 ON-LINE OPERATION RUNOFF is a program much l ike most PDP-11 RSX system programs. It is accesse d by the usual "MCR" command "MCR>RNO --- " to the monitor. RSX Runoff uses the GCML M ACRO with a specified indirect depth of two, and therefore, all specifications regarding INDIRECT Files are applicable. 11-MAR-81 CHAPTER 2 SOURCE FILE FORMAT As stated above, the sourc e file contains the textual material which will appear on the final copy, plus information to specify formatting. Most importantly, upper and lower case information may also be supplied so th at copy can be prepared on the tele- type or other such device which can nor mally input only upper case letters. All command information consists of reg ular ASCII printing char acters so that a listing of the source file may be examined if the final copy is not exactly as desired. All material in the source file is taken to be source text ex- cept those lines beginning with a period. A line begi nning with a period is assumed to be a command, and must match on e of those listed below. The commands provide the formatting information, and control various optional modes of operation. Usually the text is filled and justified as it is pr ocessed. That is, the program FILLS a line by adding successi ve words from the source text until one more word would cause the right margin to be exceeded. The line is then JUSTIFIED by inserting extra spaces in the text until the right margin is reached. If the /SC switch has been applied (See 2.2 special cha rcters,) justification is done by altering the character pitc h of the printer, producing a better quality output. The user may occasionally wish to reproduce the source text ex- actly, which is done by disabling FILLING and JUSTIF ICATION. The program may be set to FILL but not JUSTIFY, in which case the output will be normal except that lines will not be justi- fied to the right margin. The program may also be set to JUSTI- FY but not FILL, although this would probably produce peculiar results and is not recommended. When the FILL mode is on, spaces and carriage returns occurring in the source text are treated only as word separators. Multiple separators are ignored. Some of the commands cause a BREAK in the output. A B REAK means that the current line is o utput without justification, and the next word goes at the begi nning of the next line. This occurs SOURCE FILE FORMAT PAGE 2-3 11-MAR-81 2.2 SPECIAL CHARACTERS The character ampersand (& , shift-6) is used to specify under- scoring. The ampersand will cause the character follo wing it to be underscored, e.g. &f&o&o becomes foo. Underlining of a string of characters can also be sp ecified, similar to the use of the shift lock operations descri bed above. An appearance of ampersand preceded by up-arrow (^&) will cause underlining of all following characters except space. An ap- pearance of ampersand preceded by backs lash (\&) will disable this mode. The present version of RUN OFF uses the ASCII character 137 for an underline. This character may be changed by a reassembly of RUNOFF if necessary. It is occasionally necessary to include spaces in the text which should not be treated as word separators. For this pu rpose, RU- NOFF treats numbersign (#) as a quoted space; i.e. it will print as exactly one space in the output, will never b e expanded nor changed to a carriage return. To allow the appearance of the special characters (ampersand, number-sign, up-arrow, less-than, at, or back-slash) i n the out- put, the character left-arrow (_, shift -O) is used as a quote character. The character immediately following a le ft-arrow will be transmitted to the output with no formatting effect. The left arrow itself is thus another c ase requiring quoting. The following six cases occur: _&, _^, _<, _\, __, and _#. To enhance the use of the DIABLO letter-quality printe r for pro- ducing user documentation, three characters are consid ered "spe- cial" only when the "/SC" switch has be en used in the command file. The "/SC" switch is used to prevent mass conf usion to current Runof f source files. With the use of the "/SC" switch, the characters "{", "}" and "@" become special. The "{" and "}" character tell runoff to print the c haracter string they enclose in RED on the DIABLO. Thus "{diablo}" be- comes : "AdiabloB". The "@" chara cter allows you to insert any octal character into the file. Assume you wish to insert an "escape", (oct al 33) in- to the output file. The string "@33" tells runoff to put an oc- tal 033 chara cter in the output file. The "@" character is not printed, neither are subse quent octal characters. Printing is resumed when RUNOFF sees the first non- octal character in the input text. 11-MAR-81 CHAPTER 3 COMMANDS The following commands will be recognized if they are at the be- ginning of a line started with a period. Most commands have an abbreviated form herin specified by "[XX]". Any lin e in the source file beginning with a period is assumed to be o ne of these commands. If it is not, an error diagnostic wil l be typed and the line will be ignored. Some commands take a te xt or num- eric argument (s) following the command. in this case the argu- ment must be seperated from the command by a 'SPACE'. Any comand of the form '.; xxxxxxx' will default to a "COMMENT" command. It will have no effect on runoff and will not be out- put. Its sol e purpose is to enable entry of comment lines into the source text. Multiple commands can be concatenated o n one line. Following two RUNOFF standards they may be seperated by a ";" (.xxxx;.yyyy) or may just be successivly typed (.xxx x.yyyy). note that due to this, a "COMMENT" command can not c ontain a period, inasmuch as this looks like a n ew command. Also com- mands such as PARAGRAPH, CENTER, etc which are expecting a line of output text directly following must be the last command in the line. COMMANDS PAGE 3-3 Formatting 11-MAR-81 3.1.6 A.WIDEINDENT [WD] nB Works the same as INDENT e xcept characters are wide characters if output on CENTRONICS pr inter. Spacing will place the start of the wide line at the same position the normal one would be. 3.1.7 A.PARAGRAPH [PP] [P] nB The number is optional and, if present, sets the number of spaces which paragraphs are to be indented. The initi al setting is 5. The command causes a break and leaves (m+1)/2 blank lines, where m is the regular line spacing. The next line will be indented as indicated above. 3.1.8 A.AUTOPARAGRAPH [AP]B Causes any line starting w ith a space to be the start of a new paragraph. Paragraph will be indented the same as the last PAR- AGRAPH command or to the d efault if no previous PARAGRAPH com- mand was encountered. 3.1.9 A.NO AUTOPARAGRAPH [NAP]B Turns off the AUTOPARAGRAP H option. (This is the default set- ting.) Lines starting with a space will not be acted upon spe- cially. 3.1.10 A.NOTE [NT]B This provides an easy means for entering a 'NOTE' into the text. After skipping two lines, the heading ' NOTE' is centered fol- lowed by One more skipped line. Succeeding text is filled and justified with both margins indented by 5 lines to mak e the 'NOTE' visually apparent. NOTE Note processing checks for a reasonable amount of room on the page, but if the note is long, o ne should do a 'TEST PAGE N' where N = the expected line size +5 COMMANDS PAGE 3-5 Formatting 11-MAR-81 3.1.14 A.LIST NB starts an ind ented list with n spacing, moves the left margin 5 spaces to the right for each LIST command, (including each sub- sequent nested LIST.) The normal FILL and JUSTIFY modes remain in effect. Therefore, you must disengage them just af ter the LS command if you want a ragged right. 3.1.15 A.END LISTB Ends the effect of a previ ous 'LIST' command. Starting column of further LISTELEMENTS will be 5 positions to the left. Further LIST ELEMENTS will continue where it was left off (due to the effect of the previous LIST command.) An END LI ST command with no (previous) matching LIST command is considered an error. NOTE Currently LIS T/ENDLIST command pairs may be nested to a depth of thre e. A LIST command that exceeds this level will be reported as an ILLEGAL Command. COMMANDS PAGE 3-7 Page Manipulation 11-MAR-81 3.2.5 A.APPENDIX [AX] XXXXXXXXB Works the same as the CHAP TER command, except that one gets an APPENDIX page. The Append ix has a letter rather than a number identification. 3.2.6 A.NUMBER APPENDIX xB Works the same as NUMBER CHAPTER. Sets current APPEND IX number. Since Appendices are lettered rather than numbered, th e argument must be a single letter. 3.2.7 A.TITLE tttt ... ttttB This command takes the remaining text on the line as the title. This text will appear at the top of all subsequent pag es, at po- sition 0, on the second line with the page number. Th e title is initially blank. Must be last command on line ! 3.2.8 A.SUBTITLE [ST] tttt ... ttttB This command takes the remaining text on the line as the subti- tle. This text will appear on the line immediately following the title and page number. The subtitle is initiall y blank. The subtitle is not indented, but may contain leading spaces to achieve the same effect, if desired. M ust be last command on line! 3.2.9 A.DATE [DT] [D] xxxxxxxxxB Causes up to 9 character string "xxxxxxxxx" to be printed along with the subtitle at the 2nd line of each page. If no date string is present in the command, the current system d ate is in- serted instead. 3.2.10 A.PAGE [PG]B Causes a break and an advance to a new page. Does nothing if the current page is empty. Titling and numbering as for auto- matic page advance. Clears SUBPAGE mode and subpage count. COMMANDS PAGE 3-9 Mode Setting 11-MAR-81 3.3 MODE SETTING The following commands affect RUNOFF operation as to CASE, text filling, etc. 3.3.1 A.LOWER CASE [LC]B Enables the outputting of lower case characters. (This is the default setti ng. Subsequent characters will be output in lower case unless '^^ or < case conversion is used. 3.3.2 A.UPPER CASE [UC]B Disables lowe r case output. All subsequent output will be out- put in UPPER CASE, whatever case control characters are used. 3.3.3 A.JUSTIFY [J]B Causes a BREAK and sets subsequent output lines to be justified. (Initial setting) 3.3.4 A.NOJUSTIFY [NJ]B Causes a BREAK and prevent s justification of subsequent output lines. 3.3.5 A.FILL [F]B Causes a BREAK and specifies that subsequent output lines be filled. Sets the justification mode to be that specif ied by the last appearance of JUSTIFY or NOJUSTIFY. (Initial setting) COMMANDS PAGE 3-11 Parameter Setting 11-MAR-81 3.4 PARAMETER SETTING The following commands alt er the basic output parameters as to page size, etc. 3.4.1 A.LEFT MARGIN [LM] nB Causes a BREA K after which the left margin is set to n. n must be less than the right margin, but not less than 0. T he initial setting is 0. The amount of any indent plus the lef t margin must not be less than 0. 3.4.2 A.RIGHT MARGIN [RM] nB Causes a BREAK after which the right margin is set to n. n must be greater than the left margin. The initial settin g is 60. The number of characters on a line will be equal to or less than the right margin minus the left margin minus any inden ting which may be specified. Even if filling has been disabled, lines will not be extended past the right margin. 3.4.3 A.LEFT HEADER [LH] nB Sets the left margin for the 2 header lines to n. n must be less than the right header margin, but not less than 0. The header will be printed wit h a left margin of n, reguardless of subsequent .L EFT MARGIN commands. Until the left header margin is specified, it defaults to the standard left margin. 3.4.4 A.RIGHT HEADER [RH] nB Sets the right header marg in to n. n must be greater than the left header margin. The header will be printed with a right margin of n, reguardless o f subsequent .RIGHT MARGIN commands. Until the right header mar gin is specified, it defaults to the standard right margin. COMMANDS PAGE 3-13 Miscellaneous 11-MAR-81 3.5 MISCELLANEOUS The following miscellaneous commands fail to fall unde r previous command catagories. 3.5.1 A.COMMENT [COM] [;] XXXXXXXXB This command takes the rest of the text on the line as a comment . It works the same as the ".;" form. Like the ";" form the comment line cannot contain a period. 3.5.2 A.CENTER [CN] [C] nB This command causes a break after which it centers the next line following in the source file. The centering is over the column n/2, independent of the se tting of the left and right margins. If n is missing, n is assu med to be the paper width, initially 60. (See PAPER SIZE command.) Must be last command on line ! 3.5.3 A.WIDECENTER [WC] nB Works the same as CENTER except output is in CENTRON ICS wide character for mat. Characters will be centered on same position as they would have been in normal format. Must be last command on the line ! 3.5.4 A.PERIOD [PR]B Causes insertion of at least 2 spaces a fter punctuation marks (period,colon,semi-colon,e xclamation point & question mark) in the text. This is the default mode. 3.5.5 A.NO PERIOD [NPR]B Disables the PERIOD option. COMMANDS PAGE 3-15 Miscellaneous 11-MAR-81 footnote may contain commands which change these param eters, and the effect will be limited to the footnote text. The actual sp ace taken by the footnote may be more or less than that specified by n. The n merely allocates space and should be the user's be st guess. If it is considerably off, the footnote lines may overflow the pag e, or extra space may be left at the bottom. The user may wish to adjust n after examining a first draft printout. Must be the last command on the line ! 3.5.11 A.INDEX [X] tttt ... ttttB This command takes the remaining text on the line as a key word or words and adds it, along with the current page numb er, to the internal inde x buffer. The command does not cause a break. It should appear immediately before the item to be indexed. A key word or words may be indexed more than once. Must be last com- mand on the line ! 3.5.12 A.PRINT INDEX [PX]B Causes a brea k after which it prints the entire contents of the index buffer. Entries are printed in a lphabetical order, and are set again st the left margin. Regular line spacing is used, except that a blank line is left betwee n entries of different first letters. The number of the first page on which each entry appeared is p ut on the same line as the entry, beginning at the middle of the line (midway between the left and right margins). Additional page numbers fo r multiple entries follow, separated by commas. The index buffer is left empty. 11-MAR-81 APPENDIX A RNO ERROR MESSAGES RUNOFF produces error messages in the following format: RNO -- error message This appendix tabulates the error messages produced by RNO. Most of the error messages are self-explanatory. In s ome cases, RNO prints the line in which the error has occurred, s o that the user can examine the source line which caused the problem and correct it. 1. ARNO -- INTERNAL BUFFER OVERFLOWB This message is an interna l program error and should never occur in normal use. 2. ARNO -- ILLEGAL COMMANDB text ON OUTPUT PAGE nn where nn is the page on which the command text occurred. 3. ARNO -- CAN'T JUSTIFY LINE:B text where text is a line containing no spaces (oth er than quoted spaces), so that RNO is unable to justify it. 4. ARNO -- FATAL ERROR, ABORTINGB This an message is interna l program error and should never occur under normal use. 5. ARNO -- ERROR ON OUTPUT FILEB A write error has occurred on the output file. One of the following conditions exists: 1. The device is full or is write protected. 2. The hardware has failed. 3. The user does not have write access privileges to the file. RNO ERROR MESSAGES PAGE A-3 11-MAR-81 3. The volume is not mounted. 4. The specified file directory does not exist. 5. The device is full or write protected. 13.
