KERMIT (Program) KERMIT is a family of programs that do reliable file transfer between computers over TTY lines. KERMIT can be used to make a microcomputer behave as a terminal for a mainframe, or to transfer files from one computer to another. At Columbia, KERMIT can be used to transfer files to or from the SUPERBRAIN located in room 272A Mudd. KERMIT was developed at the Columbia Center for Computing Activities. It is now in widespread use: implementations are available for the IBM-PC and for many 8080- and Z80-based micros running CP/M, including the Vector Graphics, Intertec Superbrain, Ohio Scientific, Heath/Zenith 89 and 100, DEC VT180 Robin and (soon) PC100 Rainbow, and Apple II (with Z80 softcard) microcomputers. There is also a version written in C for UNIX systems, another version in Pascal for RT-11 systems, and mainframe versions for TOPS-10 on DECsystem-10s, TOPS-20 for DECSYSTEM-20s, and VM/CMS on IBM 370-series machines (or compatibles). If you are interested in installing KERMIT on another computer, refer to the KERMIT Users Guide and the KERMIT Protocol Manual (available online in DOC:KERMIT-USER.DOC and DOC:KERMIT-PROTO.DOC). To use KERMIT to transfer files between two computers, you must sign on to each computer separately and start up KERMIT on each one. This procedure varies from system to system; we discuss it for a DEC-20 and a SuperBrain. This procedure also applies to any 8080/Z80-based CP/M microcomputer communicating with the DEC-20. Type HELP SUPERBRAIN or refer to the KERMIT manual if you are not familiar with the SuperBrain microcomputer. * Examples: Start the micro; put the system floppies in drive A, your own floppy in drive B. Switch from the system disk to your own by typing B: after the micro's "A>" prompt. When you see the "B>" prompt, run KERMIT and connect to the DEC-20. A session to save files from the DEC-20 on a floppy disk in the SUPERBRAIN would look like this: 64K COLUMBIA SUPERBRAIN DOS 3.1 FOR CP/M 2.2 A>b: B>a:kermit CUCCA Superbrain Kermit-80 V2.3 Kermit-80>connect [Connecting to remote host, type CTRL-]C to return] You can now log in to the DEC-20. Turn on the PACX box and login as you would from any other terminal. Then you run KERMIT on the DEC-20 to transfer your files. To save your PASCAL program HW2.PAS, you first have to run KERMIT on the DEC-20 and instruct it to send your program to the SUPERBRAIN with the SEND command: @kermit Kermit-20>send hw2.pas Now you have to return to the SUPERBRAIN, and instruct its KERMIT to receive the file being sent. To get back to the micro, type KERMIT's escape character CTRL-] C. That means hold down the CONTROL and SHIFT keys and type "]", then release the SHIFT and CONTROL keys and type "C". ^]c [Connection closed, back at micro] Kermit-80> You will now be back giving commands to the SUPERBRAIN. Notice that the KERMIT programs on the DEC-20 and the SUPERBRAIN have different prompts to help you differentiate between the two computers (the "-80" is because the Superbrain's CPU is a Z80). Now type the RECEIVE command to the SUPERBRAIN's KERMIT: Kermit-80>receive The SUPERBRAIN will then display information about the file as it is being transferred. If the file has been successfully saved on your floppy, another "Kermit-80>" prompt will be printed. If there was an error, try sending the file again or ask the consultant for help. To send several files at once, you can include wildcards in the FILESPEC to the SEND command (type HELP FILESPEC for more information on "wildcards"). For instance, to send all of your PASCAL programs, you would use the SEND *.PAS command. The procedure for sending files from the micro to the DEC-20 is the same; you just reverse the RECEIVE and SEND commands. Note that the wildcard for specifying a single character in the filename is "?" on the SUPERBRAIN (KERMIT-80) instead of "%" as on the DEC-20. When you are finished transferring files, be sure to CONNECT back to the DEC-20, exit from KERMIT-20, and log out. * Server operation: (This section applies only to communication between Kermit-20 and Kermit-80; other versions of Kermit do not yet have this feature.) If you expect to be doing a lot of file transfers in both directions, you will find it more convenient to start Kermit-20 as a "Server". In server mode, Kermit-20 takes all its commands from Kermit-80 -- you don't have to connect back and forth and give RECEIVE/SEND commands to each end whenever you want to transfer a file, and you don't have to connect back to the DEC-20 to log out when you're done: Kermit-80>connect [Connecting to remote host. Type CTRL-]C to return to micro.] (log in to the DEC-20) @kermit Kermit-20>server [Kermit server running on DEC-20 host. Please type your escape sequence to return to your local machine. Shut down the server by typing the Kermit BYE command on your local machine.] ^]c [Connection closed, back at micro.] Kermit-80>receive *.pas Kermit-80>send foo.* Kermit-80>exit (You can exit from Kermit-80, do some other work on the micro, and run Kermit-80 again as often as you like.) Detailed descriptions of ALL commands are listed in the KERMIT manual, available online as DOC:KERMIT.DOC. CONNECT Make a "virtual terminal" connection to the remote system. On the DEC-20, CONNECT invokes TELNET on the TTY line specified by the SET LINE command (this feature is not available to holders of course or NCA IDs). To "escape" from a virtual terminal connection, type the escape sequence (CTRL-] C on the Superbrain). LOG filespec While CONNECTed, make a transcript of the session in the CP/M file named by FILESPEC. Remote host must be able to do XON/XOFF flow control (set TERMINAL PAUSE (ON) COMMAND on the DEC-20). EXIT Exit from KERMIT back to the host operating system. HELP Type a summary of KERMIT commands and what they do. QUIT Same as EXIT. RECEIVE Receive a file or group of files from the remote host. RECEIVE filespec (Kermit-80 only) Tell the remote Kermit server to send the files named by FILESPEC. SEND filespec Sends a file or group of files FILESPEC from the local host to the remote host. SET arguments Establish various system-dependent parameters. The most useful ARGUMENTS are: DELAY n Wait n seconds before beginning transmission. This allows sufficient time for you to escape back to the micro and get its KERMIT ready to receive. ESCAPE Sets the CONNECT escape character; KERMIT will prompt you for the character. FILE-WARNING argument ARGUMENT can be either ON or OFF; the default is ON. Normally SuperBrain KERMIT will warn you of filename conflicts when receiving files. If you don't want to be warned, you can SET FILE-WARNING OFF. IBM-FLAG Set communication line echoing, parity, and handshaking for the remote IBM VM/CMS system. SHOW Display the values of SET options. STATUS List information about the last transfer. BYE (Kermit-80 only) Shut down and log out the remote Kermit server.
