This is to announce a new version of KERMIT written in PL/I for the Honeywell MULTICS system by Paul Amaranth of Oakland University, Rochester Michigan. This is an initial release, and provides basic service, i.e. no server mode of operation. Paul will continue to develop this version; he expects to be adding server mode and other functionality in the coming months. If anyone wants to modify this program, it is suggested that you contact Paul first, to make sure that the work is not already done. Unfortunately, he's not connected to any networks, but you can call him at the number given in the source file. You should also call him if you have bugs to report. This is one of two PL/I KERMITs, developed independently. The other, for PR1ME computers done by people at The SOURCE, will be available shortly, as soon as I receive their tape. The PR1ME version will have server mode and several other advanced features. Either of these PL/I KERMITs may serve as a basis for new implementations for computers that have PL/I, such as the many IBM operating systems (DOS, MVS/TSO, MTS, GUTS, MUSIC, etc) not currently supported. Efforts in this direction are encouraged. - Frank
