PHONE is a utility which allows you to talk to other users on your system. Once PHONE is started, the screen of the VT100 (only terminal supported) is split into two viewports. After you dial someone, what you type is displayed in the top viewport and what the other user types is displayed in the bottom viewport. At the current time, only two users can talk at the same time. When your phone conversation is complete, typing CTRL/Z returns you to the command prompt (%) where you can exit by typing either another CTRL/Z or by typing EXIT and the return key. Command line format: PHONE [phone-command] You may specify a command as part of the PHONE command line, or you may enter it at the command prompt (%). It requires the terminal name of the person whom you wish to place the call to. You can also dial another person simply by typing the terminal name. Logical names (such as TI: to talk to yourself) can also be specifed but only when used with the DIAL command. The complete syntax of the DIAL command is: PHONE DIAL TTnn: or PHONE TTnn: When you enter this command, PHONE tries to ring that terminal's phone. If successful, it will continue to ring every 10 seconds until one of the following happens: o The person answers the phone. o The person rejects the call. o You type any character at your keyboard. This action cancels the call immediately. 2 DIRECTORY The DIRECTORY command allows you to obtain a list of those terminals with whom you could talk on your system. This command spawns a command line to the MCR to get a directory of logged on terminals. First, it attempts to spawn the USERS program and if it is not available, will spawn the command line "DEV /LOG" to list all logged on terminals. The complete syntax of the DIRECTORY command is: DIRECTORY The directory is displayed, line by line, on your terminal until the entire list is displayed or until you type any key on the keyboard. 2 EXIT When you enter this command, PHONE returns to the system. Typing CTRL/Z during a command is equivalement to entering the EXIT command. 2 SCROLL Specifies whether text should be scrolled or wrapped when the viewport becomes full. If SCROLL (the default) is specified, existing text is scrolled up one line while new text appears on the bottom line. If NOSCROLL is specified, text is wrapped around and new text appears on the top line of the viewport. The complete syntax of the NOSCROLL command is: NOSCROLL 2 SWITCH Specifies the telephone switch hook character that signals the entry of a command during a conversation. Normally, all text that you type is considered part of the conversation. When you type the switch hook character, all text up to the next carriage return (or switch hook) is treated as a command. The default switch hook character is the percent sign (%). The complete syntax of the SWITCH command is: SWITCH=character 2 VIEWPORT Specifies the maximum number of lines in your viewport.
