The file contents are printed in octal (word or 0byte oriented), ASCII and if a word orien ted dump, radix 050. The program normally prints in a record oriented 0fashion but can also print a virtual block or physical block 0dump. A formatted dump of a file header can also be 0produced. 0 0COMMAND FORMAT +_______ ______ 0 0DUM out-spec [/out-switch] = in-spec [/in-switches] 0 0where 0out-spec is the file specifier of the dump. The default 0 out-spec is SYO:DUMP LST 0 0/out-switch is an optional output switch specifying the 0 disposition of the dump. It may be 0 0/SP Spool the output. The output file is queued 0 for printing. The default is /-SP 0 0in-spec is the specifier of the file to be dumped. It 0 may be any device usable by FCS. If the device 0 is not a directory device, the switch /PH is 0 0 0 0 0 PAGE 2 0 assumed. 0 0in switches are optional input switches controlling the 0 format of the dump. They may be one (or more) 0 of the following: 0 0/HD Dump the file header. A formatted dump of the 0 FILES-11 header is produced. The contents of 0 the individual cells in the file header are 0 multi-header file, the extension headers as 0 well as the primary header are interpreted as 0 in Appendix F of the I/O Operations manual. If 0 the file is a dumped. 0 0 Default: /-HD 0 0/BL Dump the file in block mode. The file is 0 dumped in blocks of a size appropriate to the 0 device on which it is located. The maximum 0 block size is an installation parameter but is 0 ordinarily 2048. bytes. 0 0 Default: /-BL 0 0/FR:from Dumps the file starting with record "from". If 0 the device is not direct access, "from"-1 0 blocks are skipped, otherwise, block from is 0 0 0 0 0 PAGE 3 0 the final block read. "from" is a decimal 0 number 0 0 Default: /FR:1 0 0/FO:for Dump "for" records. "for" records (or blocks) 0 of the file are dumped. "for" is a decimal 0 number. 0 0 Default: /FO:32767 0 0/FI:files Dumps for "files" end-of-files or "for" records 0 whichever happens first. This is useful for 0 dumping sequential devices such as magnetic 0 tape. "files" is a decimal number. 0 0 Default: /FI:1 0 0/PH Dump physical records on the device. The file 0 specifier is ignored in this case. If the 0 device is not a directory device, /PH is 0 assumed. If the /PH switch is specified (or 0 assumed), the /BL switch is assumed. 0 0 Default: /-PH 0 0/BY Treat the records in the file as streams of 0 0 0 0 0 PAGE 4 0 bytes not words. If this switch is specified, 0 the radix-50 interpretation of record words is 0 not given. 0 0 Default: /-BY 0Dump Format +____ ______ 0 0Each dumped record is preceded by a line specifying the 0record number and it's size. Following this is the dump of 0the record's contents printed on as many lines as necessary. 0Each line can be broken into three fields plus an optional 0one. The first field is the offset into the record (in 0octal) of the first byte printed on that line. The second 0field is the octal interpretation of the record printed 0either as a stream of 6 digit numbers (word mode) or 3 digit 0numbers (byte mode). The next field is an ASCII 0interpretation of the record with un-printable bytes 0represented as periods ('.'). The last field, the radix-50 0interpretation of the record is only printed if the dump is 0performed in word mode. Both the ASCII and radix-50 0interpretations are delimited with asterisks ('*'). 0 0The file header dump is an interpretation of the file header 0according to Appendix F of the I/0 Operations manual. Each 0line contains a textual description of the cell, the cell 0name along with the cell's value. If the cell contains a 0radix-50 character string it is interpreted as such, 0 0 0 0 0 PAGE 5 0 likewise the cell representing the file owner UIC is printed 0as a UIC. If the cell contains a bit pattern, it is printed 0first as a octal number and then as a string of the symbols 0forming that pattern. Areas of the header that are not 0assigned meaings are dumped as described in the record dump 0above. 0 0Error Messages +_____ ________ 0 0Error messages may consist of either one or two lines, each 0preceded by the task identifier DUM --. Some of the error 0messages described below contain system standard text 0describing file system error returns. If this test is 0unavailable for any reason, the negative of the system error 0code is printed instead. The corresponding text may then be 0found by examining Appendix I of the I/0 Operations Manual. 0 0The following error messages may be produced by the DUMP 0program: 0 0DUM -- CAN ONLY DUMP THE HEADER OF A FILE: command line 0 0The /PH switch was either specified or assumed. There is no 0header associated with a physical device. 0 0DUM -- CANNOT READ HEADER: system message 0DUM -- command line 0 0 0 0 0 PAGE 6 0 0 The attempt to read the header of the file was rejected for 0the reason described by the system message.
