Recently I have been organizing the older archives of this list. Files
from several sources have contributed to a hopefully complete collection.
(Thanks, James Narem!)

In the interests of "better late than never" I will attempt to respond to
some issues raised over the years. The original posting date will be
included in the (somewhat trimmed) original articles, etc.

Archives will be available on sunsite.unc.edu in the directory

/pub/academic/computer-science/history/pdp8/pdp8-lovers

Files are organized by months starting from the list's inception in
February, 1989. Files are named similarly to the alt.sys.pdp8 archives
held in the adjacent directory ../usenet/alt.sys.pdp8.

8902.lov for February, 1989
8903.lov for March, 1989
8904.lov for April, 1989

etc.

Anyone who believes they can contribute to the accuracy of the archive
should first retrieve the corresponding month's file to see how well we
have done, etc. Note: some months may be entirely missing due to
circumstances (either the list was temporarily defunct or no activity or
just no known record for that period, etc.). Anyone who can fill in any
"gaps" is requested to do so, etc.

I have a program CCF (copy coded file) that will compress text.

[...]

Does anyone have this program currently? (Preferably in source form.) It
could be useful for our current endeavors to archive PDP-8 files.

A PDP-8 with cache was designed and constructed by Professor
David Casasent at Carnegie-Mellon University. This has a
performance factor of 5 in comparison to the PDP8/E without
cache. There is an article in Computer Design, pp. 83-89
Nov. 1971. Anyone have more info?

Of course, things are sometimes easier than they seem! I just walked across
the street to the U of Iowa Engineering Electronics Shop, and walked out
with a tube of new DS8640 (aka SP380) and DS8641 (the "rare" bus transceiver
chip), made by National Semiconductor in 1984. They've got plenty more in
stock, 8640 chips at $1.79, and 8641 chips at $1.20 each.

Hi, everybody.

I don't know how many of you who might use WWW or Gopher, but
Update (the computer club I'm involved in) are collecting
all kind of information regarding computer history.
Everything can be of interest.

If you have something which you might think is worth sharing,
please send us a copy (you can mail it to me, but preferrably
to andersa@update.uu.se).

If you want to get inspired, or just want to dig into a little
history, you can access what we collect via WWW or Gopher at
WWW.Update.UU.SE and Gopher.Update.UU.SE.

Please spread this information to all who might be concerned.

Subject: Rare chips

I've recently spent some time in the library using their CDROM catalog of
all IC and discrete components currently made on earth. In the process,
I've uncovered sources that the catalog, at least, lists as current
manufacturers of a number of chips that aren't exactly common but are
needed to keep Omnibus machines alive and running:

Lansdale Semiconductor seems to have inherited most of Signetics
discontinued stuff, including the Utilogic (SP) series, and the Signetics
8000 series.

	314 - 7 input nor gate
317 - dual 4 input expandable nor gate
	380 - quad 2-input nor gate
	384 - quad 2-input or gate
8250 - binary to octal decoder
8251 - BCD to decimal decoder
        8881 - quad 2-input nand gate

Note, on the 380, that Signetics came out with the 8T380 somewhat later,
and that this is a pin for pin replacement with schmidt trigger inputs
(the original SP380 didn't have schmidt trigger inputs). Phillips is
listed as the current manufacturer of the 8T380.

Both Lansdale and Phillips have lots of local distributors.

The most interesting chip I tracked down is the MH8641; the database lists
one remaining manufacturer for this chip, Tesla Elektronicke, 756 61 Roznov
Pod, Radhostem, Czechoslovakia (beats me what the velvet revolution did to
that postal address; is it the modern Czech replblik or the modern Slovak
republic).

I haven't placed any orders, so I don't know if you can actually get any
of these chips. I also haven't been able to track down data sheets for
any of them (although I did get the 8T380 data sheet).

I was able to get Nat'l Semi 8641's surprisingly recently from Ham Av,
at $2.24 each. As far as I know they're still made. Why does your
stockroom charge more for 8640's than 8641's? They're $1.49 from Ham Av.
Jameco had SP380's listed for $.49 each within the last year, so if you
want to stock up on spares they're the ones...
