91-09/UK.places.info I thought that some of you may be interested in the address of Advanced Robotic Research Ltd where they are developing the Teletact(tm) force feedback data glove, amongst other things:- Advanced Robotics Research Ltd National Advanced Robotics Research Centre University Road, SALFORD, M5 4PP, United Kingdom. Telephone: 44-61-745-7384 Fax: 44-61-745-8264 Suggested contact: Robert J Stone, Deputy General Manager (Technical) The latest developments of the Teletact technology (co-invented by Robert Stone and developed in association with Air Muscle Ltd) include designing a teletact glove which can be added to any existing non-force feedback glove including Mattel's Power Glove, the Exos Dexterous Hand Master and Virtex's CyberGlove. They are also investigating palmar and forearm force feedback systems, and are developing software tools for ascribing tactile features to virtual objects. Their main area of research currently is the VERDEX (Virtual Enviroment Remote Driving EXperiment) project which involves a mobile robot platform controlled by a by a remote user without solely using TV cameras. The idea is to 'virtually' reconstruct a remote enviroment using a pre existing CAD representaion of the area and correlating it with geometric output from non- visual sensors. The updated virtual picture would show the current state of the enviroment (eg damage, obstacles) and could be explored by the remote user. The robot platform is capable of local collision avoidance and when the it has been guided to an area which needs more detailed information the user can switch the robot to output stereo TV pictures. The computing system for VERDEX is based on Division Ltd's "Vision" system.
