This is a request for discussion on the creation of a newsgroup
for metalworking.

Group Name
----------

        rec.crafts.metalworking

Status
------
--MORE--(26%)

        Unmoderated.

Rationale
---------

        In a sense, the group already exists, as trial.rec.metalworking.
        However, the "trial" method of newsgroup creation has been more
        or less abandoned, leaving no method to simply rename the existing
        group. It should also be pointed out that the trial hierarchy is
        not carried by many sites, limiting the availability and participation.
        Thus, it is proposed to simply create a new newsgroup from scratch.

        This group would be for discussion of all aspects of metalworking,
        both at the home shop level and, potentially, at the industrial
        and production level. It would be, in a sense, a metallic
        counterpart to the popular rec.woodworking newsgroup. There is
        no intent to compete with rec.woodworking, but rather to complement
        it (some people in the woodworking list have in fact expressed an
        interest in creating rec.crafts.metalworking to discuss tool shaping
        and related topics).

        Thus, this is not a splinter group from an existing newsgroup, but
--MORE--(56%)

        a new group to address an audience already partially in place via
        the trial group.

Charter

Proposed Charter -- REC.CRAFTS.METALWORKING

The USENET newsgroup, rec.crafts.metalworking, is a newsgroup which discusses
various aspects of working with metal, such as (but not limited to):

  machining, as on a lathe, milling machine, grinder, etc.;

  numerical control of such machines;

  welding, whether by gas, arc, mig, tig, thermite, or other methods;

  casting various metals by various methods;

  hardening/tempering various metals;

  blacksmithing/forging;

--MORE--(72%)

  spinning and hammer work;

  sheet metal work;

  jewelry-making;

  purchasing and/or reconditioning metalworking tools and machinery;

  interesting projects;

  books on metal technologies and history;

Example areas of interest:

  knife/sword making;

  automotive repair;

  steam engine (model/scale, though full-sized discussions are welcome!);

  art work, such as bronze castings and sculptures;

  gunsmithing;
--MORE--(83%)

  toolmaking, such as for woodworking, further metalworking, etc.;

While the bulk of the discussion will probably be directed towards
small-scale "home" shops, industrial/production discussions are also
quite welcome.
