Many thanks to all who replied to my question about
which solar/wind equipment to buy.

The Home Power Magazine, Solar Electricity Today and
the Off the Shelf directory of renewable energy were
recommended as good sources of information for
the hardware.

The Bergey wind turbines were recommended as most durable,
and the Whisper turbines with high output voltages were
proposed as a way to overcome the problem of line-losses
with turbines situated some distance from the battery.

I still don't have a ready solution, but the above will
go some way in helping me to make a decision.
