------------------------------- - NGO Renewable Energy Summit - ------------------------------- The main objectives of this International Solar Energy Society (ISES) initiative are to influence the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) to more seriously address the impact of energy use within the context of the CSD agenda, and to raise awareness within the CSD and the non-governmental organization (NGO) communities as to the benefits and potentials of renewable energy. The NGO Renewable Energy Initiative consists of four components: - Four Preparatory Meetings Washington, DC Budapest, Hungary Pretoria, South Africa Salta, Argentina - NGO Renewable Energy Summit May 20-21 New York, New York (In conjunction with CSD) - NGO Renewable Energy Regional Conferences ISES South America - Salta, Argentina June 22-23 ISES Europe - Thessaloniki, Greece October 10-12 ISES Africa - Pretoria, South Africa October 14-15 - Communicating the Renewable Energy Message The most knowledgeable NGOs in the world involved in the many interrelated issues of sustainable development will assemble during the NGO Renewable Energy Summit in New York and the following three NGO Renewable Energy Conferences. These meetings will address the fundamental relationships between the non- governmental organization's concerns, the current environmental and developmental impacts of energy, and renewable energy solutions. The Initiative will build upon the extensive knowledge the NGOs have in the environmental and developmental issues central to the CSD and Agenda 21. The Summit and Regional Conferences will be structured to address renewable energy from the perspective of NGOs that are not directly involved in energy. Therefore, the types of NGOs involved will be those which view sustainable development from the varied perspectives of water/air pollution, gender equity, youth, forests, biodiversity, poverty, population, land utilization, economic stability, quality of life, health, business, agriculture and jobs. These NGOs will present their concerns relative to the CSD issues and how they believe energy use affects them. Renewable energy experts will, in turn, explore the key links between NGO concerns and renewable energy solutions. In conclusion, all groups will propose specific CSD actions. NGO Renewable Energy Summit --------------------------- The NGO Renewable Energy Summit will be organized and facilitated by the International Solar Energy Society and the American Solar Energy Society, with important collaboration and input from key national and international non-governmental organizations. The sponsors of this event include: * NORAD, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation * SIDA, Swedish International Development Authority * USAID, United States Agency for International Development * USDOE,United States Department of Energy * US ECRE, United States Export Council for Renewable Energy * IFREE, International Fund for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency * WINROCK INTERNATIONAL (Renewable Energy and Environment Program) * WRI, World Resources Institute At this forum the broad base of NGOs will be challenged to address the key issues pertaining to sustainable development through the following questions: > How do you define sustainable development? > What are the more important unifying principles of sustainable development? (i.e., Equity, Justice, Empowerment) > How do today's political, economic, educational and social structures effect the following primary elements integral to sustainable development? > What specific practices, both by local, national and international institutions, effect these primary elements in either a positive or negative way? Friday, May 20 -Population Stability -Land Utilization -Environmental Protection (atmosphere, fresh water, oceans and seas, toxic chemical and hazardous wastes) Saturday, May 21 -National Security (sovereignty) -Economic Stability (combating poverty, employment, balance of trade) -Natural Resource Management (non-renewable resources, biodiversity) -Health Care Delivery -Fulfillment of Agricultural Needs > How does energy production and consumption impact the particular area(s) of emphasis addressed by your NGO? The conclusions from the NGO Summit will be compiled and utilized as input to the Regional Conferences. The NGO RENEWABLE ENERGY SUMMIT will be conducted at the midpoint of the second UN Commission on Sustainable Development meeting in New York. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Waldorf Astoria Hotel May 20: registration 12-1:00 pm 301 Park Avenue sessions 1 - 6:30 pm New York, NY 10022 May 21: sessions 8:30 am - 6:30 pm Telephone: 1 212 872 4800 Registration Fee: $75 USD Fax: 1 212 872 4875 A block of rooms has been reserved at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Regional NGO Renewable Energy Conferences ----------------------------------------- Three conferences organized by ISES, its Regional Offices and the National Sections, will focus on renewable energy solutions to a more sustainable future. The conferences will be structured to allow input from non-energy related NGOs and experts within the solar community to emphasize the best social, economic and political structures which encourage the widespread utilization of renewable energy technologies. The Regional Conferences will address issues concerning industrialized countries (ISES Europe in Greece) and those of developing countries (ISES South America in Argentina and ISES Africa in South Africa). Additionally, NGOs and solar experts at the regional conferences will address the required actions by the United Nations, and specifically the CSD, for the advancement of appropriate renewable energy solutions. -Financial Resources and Mechanisms -Education, Science and Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies, Cooperation and Capacity-Building Biotechnology Technology Science Education Capacity-Building -Decision-Making Structures Integrating Environment and Development International Institutional Arrangements International Legal Instruments Communicating The Renewable Energy Message ------------------------------------------ Through the NGO Summit and the Regional Conferences, the conclusions will be developed and then communicated to key decision-makers worldwide. This will be accomplished through the distribution of a written report and through ISES's Global Communications Network. An interactive CD-ROM disc will also be developed to be used to help educate both delegates and NGOs at upcoming CSD meetings, and during the numerous other opportunities that will exist throughout the CSD process. We feel that through the NGO Renewable Energy Summit and the Regional Conferences, we will communicate the forthcoming message, the NGO Community will have a significant impact on the CSD process and, equally important, help educate thousands of decision-makers worldwide as to the benefits and potentials of renewable energy efficiency options.
