Wellcome-funded research lectureship at Southampton (History of Medicine) FFI: Bernard Harris, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO9 5NH, tel 0703 592567 The Department of Sociology and Social Policy at Southampton University would like to draw your attention to a Wellcome-Trust-funded Research Lectureship which has recently become available in this Department. These posts are not normally advertised in the national press, but we are anxious to circulate information about the post as widely as possible. We should therefore be grateful if you would bring the contents of this letter to the notice of anyone whom you feel may be interested in applying. The essential purpose of a Wellcome University Award is to create permanent academic posts for researchers working in the general field of the history of medicine. The Department of Sociology & Social Policy wishes to invite applications for such an award from anyone with interests in the social history of health and illness or the history of health policy in the 20th century. The successful candidate will receive the whole of their salary costs from the Wellcome Trust during the first three years of their appointment, and their salary costs will be shared between the Trust and the University for the following two years. At the end of five years, they will become an ordinary member of the University's academic staff. The successful candidate will be expected to concentrate on research activities during the period for which they are receiving financial support from the Wellcome Trust, although they will be required to devote an increasing proportion of their time to teaching duties as the period progresses. At the end of five years, they will be expected to carry out the same duties as any other member of the University's academic staff. As you can see, this is a highly desirable research-based appointment which will enable the successful candidate to become a full-time member of the University's permanent academic staff. We should be very grateful if you would circulate information about the post to anyone who might wish to apply for it. A set of further particulars may be obtained from Dr Bernard Harris, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO9 5NH, tel 0703 592567; and application forms may be obtained from the Personnel Department (D/159) University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO9 5NH, tel 0703 593793. Applicants must complete the standard application form, and the deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 1994. Prospective applicants are advised that they must submit a detailed research proposal (c. 2000 words) with their application. The proposal should be submitted in a form which would enable the successful candidate to submit it with very little alteration to the Wellcome Trust, who will make the final decision regarding confirmation of the post. It is therefore essential that prospective candidates should obtain a copy of the further particulars before their applications are submitted. /\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\ 2. National Initiative for Humanities and Arts Computing Moves Forward FFI: Charles Henry At a critical meeting on January 17, the ad hoc steering committee of the National Initiative on Humanities and Arts Computing met to plan the next steps in gaining a voice for the humanities and arts in the development of the National Information Infrastructure, the much-publicized plan for a national telecommunications system. The group agreed on a number of action items. The Getty Art History Information Program, the Coalition for Networked Information, and the American Council of Learned Societies -- the sponsors of the National Initiative -- will convene two working groups to develop a profile of humanities and arts computing in the United States. In the coming three months, these working groups will gather a nationwide array of experts in scholarly, instructional, and creative computing in order to draw a picture of the breadth and vitality of technology in the humanities and arts. The Working Group on Technical Requirements will define the particular challenges that these fields pose for technology. The Working Group on Electronic Resources will survey the range and variety of computer-based information and tools, available and in development for transmission on the electronic superhighways. The findings of these working groups will be presented in June to a National Task Force, comprised of major organizations and institutions involved in humanities and arts computing in America. The goal of this process is to reinstate the values and basis for community that the humanities and arts bring to the dialogue shaping public policy. The sponsors recognize that this goal requires gaining the recognition and support of the Clinton-Gore administration if the special needs of this vital community are to be met. Only a coordinated National Initiative can secure a future for the American people's cultural heritage in the digital environment, and guarantee the network as a medium of creativity and learning. The Getty Art History Information Program will provide the seed money for these initial steps, with the expectation that other interested organizations will demonstrate their commitment to the National Initiative through significant contributions, according to their means. *** At a meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information on November 19, 1993, this National Initiative was launched by a group of twenty-five concerned leaders in the movement to automate humanities and arts information. At that time the group produced the following statement of purpose: The absence of the humanities and arts in the development of a national information infrastructure ignores the value of the American people's cultural heritage, and the network as a medium of creativity and learning, in the crucial formation of technology policy. The members of the Task Force on a National Initiative for Humanities and Arts Computing endorse the principle that humanities and arts voices are critical -- indeed equal to the recognized interests of the sciences -- in the balanced development of the nation's technological infrastructure. Reinstating the humanities and arts in the dialogue shaping this public policy is of utmost urgency. We call for the reintroduction of the humanities and arts in the formation of such policy. Goals agreed upon by the Task Force: 1. Define a rubric that articulates the value of humanities and arts computing for a democratic society. 2. Build a profile of humanities and arts computing using data that identifies the breadth and vitality, as well as the needs, of technology in these fields. 3. Form alliances with identified stakeholders in order to engage programmatically in national policy development and planning. /\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\ 9. Call for Submissions: Race and Identity in the United States FFI: Jonathan Jaffe This is a call for submissions for a new anthology on race and identity in the United States. This anthology will reflect various views on race and identity in the United States. Authors will be from EVERY race, writing about subjects which relate to this topic as they see fit. Writings will include, but will not be limited to, essays, fiction, poetry, nonfiction, biographical and academic works. The intent of publishing this book is two-fold: first, to give an opportunity to writers who have not bee n published to print their work alongside well-known authors. The second goal is to amalgamate writings into a literate collection of work able to stand on its own and also serve as a catalyst for discussion on how race affects identity in the United States. This anthology will not be limited to academic circles. It is intended to be published for the public at large. It is highly unlikely that monetary compensation can be offered. All submissions must be hard copy and should be accompanied by something in electronic form, i.e., diskette or sent via electronic mail. Submissions may be of any length. All electronic submissions should be in plain text form or in a popular program format such as WordPerfect for IBM-PCs or Word for Macs. Deadline: 4/30/94. Submissions received later will have decreasing chances of being reviewed, but are not automatically excluded. Neither submissions nor diskettes will be returned. ------- End of HistNews Vol.2, No.5 -------
