USAMHI Forts - Carlisle - Indian School RefBranch js May 76 NOTE: CROW INDIANS SENT TO CARLISLE INDIAN SCHOOL, 1888-89 A cursory search through monthly issues of The Red Man/Morning Star school newspaper, 1888-89, revealed no articles on the arrival of Crow Indians. The school's annual report, printed in the Sep 1889 issue, p. 8, indicates eight Crows at Carlisle in Sep 88, after which 23 arrived (19 males, 4 females). See also: Linderman, Frank B. USAMHI Forts - Carlisle Indian School - Athletes RefBranch js Oct 76 NOTE: "RECRUITMENT" OF TEWANIMA The War Dept's Annual Report, 1907, Vol III, p. 175 records that: Troops H and K, Fifth Cavalry, left Fort Wingate, New Mexico, October 19, 1906, for the Moqui Indian Reservation, to assist Agent Perry in adjusting trouble regarding compulsory school attendance of children of Oraibi Indians. Troop H returned November 18 and Troop K November 19, 1906, having in charge 17 Indian prisoners for confinement at Fort Huachuca, and 11 Indians to be sent to Carlisle, PA. One of those eleven prisoners sent to Carlisle Indian School was Louis Tewanima, "thin, emaciated, beligerent" (sic). In 1912, Tewanima, along with Jim Thorpe, represented Carlisle at the Olympics in Stockholm and became the first American to win a medal (2d place) in the 10,000 meter race. See: Hall, Moss.
