============================================================================== The files in this directory are a listing of all US military casualties from the Vietnam War. They are taken from the November 1992 version of the Combat Area Current Casualties File (Southeast Asia), and include limited information such as name, rank, date of casualty, home of record, location on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and a few other data fields. The following files are currently (August 1994) part of this archive: VVMNAMES.ZIP -- The listing of names, in alphabetical order. Uncompressed file size is approximately 6.6 Mb. The file is in fixed-field ASCII, and should be accessible to any text editor. VVMINFO.ZIP -- A series of files that explains the listings in file VVMNAMES, gives sources of further information, etc. CONVR403.ZIP -- A freeware utility, originally from the SIMTEL collection, that makes it possible to convert the VVMNAMES file to DBase or LOTUS format. A "definition file" used by this program is included in VVMINFO. These files have been compressed with Info-Zip's ZIP v. 2.0, and can be uncompressed by Info-Zip's UNZIP and PKUNZIP 2.04g to my certain knowledge. VVMNAMES can be uncompressed by GNU's GZIP if you change the name to VVMNAMES.Z, but VVMINFO (which contains multiple files) cannot be uncompressed with GZIP. These files were prepared by my MS-DOS bitty box at home, and since I am not well versed in UNIX or Macintosh systems, those users may have minor problems. Contact me and I will try to work with you to make the files available. Tom Holloway ==============================================================================
