Joseph Peck NAM VET Managing Editor VETLink #1 - Pittsfield, MA (413) 443-6313 "Footprints" I remember the poem. Saw it the first time when I was battlin' for custody of the children of my first marriage. It came at a time I sorely needed it. "Footprints" - a poem that sorta goes like: "Hey Lord! Ya said you'd ALWAYS be with me! I had a dream the other night. You and I were walking along the beach. Suddenly scenes of my past life flashed across the sky. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand - one belonged to me and the others were yours. When the last scenes of my life flashed by, I noticed that during the roughest, toughest times along my pathway of life, there was only ONE set of footprints. You said you'd ALWAYS walk with me! Why was there only ONE set? 'My precious, precious child,' said the Lord. 'When you noticed only ONE set of footprints, it was THEN that 'I' carried you." "Footprints" Many times in MY life, the ones in the sand sure weren't mine - even though it was MY life's path I was lookin' at... Many of you out here in "NamVet-world" know that I've been sorta beset by one crisis situation after another for the past few months. THIS month, I've been HAMMERED by 'em... One rainy, thunderstorm-type night I shut off VETLink #1 to protect it from any static electricity. When I turned it back on, it wouldn't come on. 1 motherboard; 1 power supply; 1 multi-I/O board; lotta disk reformatting/backing up and a lot of hours and VETLink #1 was back on-line and limping along... The "Footprints" then looked a little like Lefty's... and a little further on down the path, they look like they've been added to by a fellow vet named Randy when it came to getting our original hard disk put back in operating order... (Boy! You guys gots BIG feet!!!) Job after job I've applied for. Job after job I've interviewed for. And job after job, I've received letters that stated "Your qualifications are impressive. A person with your talents will do well. However..." "Footprints" - they really weren't mine then either. The US Postal Service, after all our concentrated efforts to finally find this disabled vet a job (ME), advised me that even if I were allowed to take the exam for a postal custodian, there's still a lifting requirement (ya MUST be able to lift continuously 70=75lbs). The VA says I can't lift more than 5-15 lbs. The Postal Service said they'd have to disqualify me for that job. ("But that'll be GOOD for your wife," they said. "Then SHE can NAM VET Newsletter Page 1 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 have your ten-points veterans' preference!") "Footprints" - Lord I KNOW ya got a reason for all this... In our December, 1989 CONCENTRATED SERVICE section I input the basic situation concerning the house/home of my family and I. In today's (6/17/90) local paper there appeared an advertisement notifying our local community of a public auction of our house/home on 22 June 90. "Footprints" - At first I saw two sets of 'em, mine and the God I sincerely believe in. One set seems to be fading away just now... Moderating the IVVEC... takes a special energy; a long, long look at wisdom and constant thinking about "What's GOOD for the echo" ... Even with many not-positive comments, IVVEC managed to right itself and find the direction in which it was originally sent: To BE that haven, resting place for all vets and their close friends. I've discovered that a LOT of "moderating" can be done by "sitting and watching, letting the 'quiet' voices speak out - and they've done well.. "Footprints" - There are some real good ones in IVVEC... I've seen so many of you logging on to VETLink #1 and looking for this month's NamVet. There have been 52 file requests for it. All have resulted in "File Not Found" messages - or "BAD_REQUEST.TXT" ... Our Chief Emeritus (Retired Chief) has been resurrected and is typin' his fingers to the bone to get this issue out. "Footprints" - Now Todd's join the crowd... Oh my! The whole beach is filled with nothing but footprints!!! NamVet... IVVEC... the VetNet echoes... help with broken computers and software puzzles.... help with broken hard disks... help with it all... I'm GLAD there's so many footprints out here... "Footprints" of the toughest, most persistent and determined veterans in ALL of American history..." I'm GLAD too, that one of 'em MIGHT be mine... but for now, when I NEED it most, I think I'm being carried. Thanx guys n' gals... really THANX!!! I HOPE I'll still be around for next month's issue..... but that is in hands much more powerful than mine. I'll give it MY best shot - and my family and I ARE tryin' our best... 'til Next Month Show a brother or sister veteran that YOU care!!! Ci'ao for Ni'ao -Joe- NAM VET Newsletter Page 2 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 Reflections in Memorium By: Todd Looney NAM VET Managing Editor Vietnam Veterans' Valhalla - San Jose, CA (408) 298-2740 Memorial Day has always had a special meaning to me, as I am sure it does to most veterans whether they've seen combat or not. It is a time I reflect back on the many friends who died in Vietnam nearly two decades ago, and to the cause for which they gave their lives. I know at the time many of us were not too clear about why we were in southeast Asia, and many of us are still a little fuzzy on that issue, but I believe most of us are now proud of the part we played in America's history, regardless of its outcome. I am happy to see that a great majority of Americans now feel better about us veterans. It is hard sometimes to forgive them for putting me and my brothers and sisters through the hell we had to endure after returning to the "real world", but I have come to a point where I can put those feelings aside and take what society has to offer now at face value. This Memorial Day, 1990, I strolled slowly through the national cemetery between San Jose and San Francisco, past the countless stones marking the remains of literally thousands of young men and women who died for this country during past wars. I could not help but be overwhelmed at the sense of loss as though I knew each and every one of them, which in a way I suppose I did. The veterans of the Vietnam "war" are not that different from the veterans of WWI, WWII, or the Korean conflict if you look at them long enough. We were all traumatized by our experiences, and many of us still suffer today because of what we did and what we saw. Most of us were still kids when we donned the uniforms and answered our country's call to arms. Most of us left sweethearts at home and the concept of "Dear John" lingered throughout each era. We thought about the same things while we were fighting on foreign shores, and we all believed in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And too many of us died. I could not staunch the flow of the tears running down my face as I sauntered among the headstones thinking about who lay beneath each of them. All the pain they went through to protect the country they loved so dearly as to give up their lives for her. And for the Vietnam veterans, all the pain they suffered in the grave not being permitted to rest until America finally, at long last, allowed them to go their etherial way in peace. I want to apologize for this month's issue of the NAM VET being late. Nothing could have been done to prevent it. So many things are happening with both Joe and I at the same time that we just couldn't get it out on time. Thank you for your patience, as you can see, it was worth it. I hope that we gave credit where credit was due and didn't put someone eles byline on your story. I think we got it right, but you're a better judge than we at this point. Joe's system crashed and he did his darndest to get everthing straightened out. I think he did a superb job. So this is really a skeleton issue. Things have really changed, I remember when Joe and I were hollering with joy when we had twenty pages. Now look at it! Kroll NAM VETs Agent Orange Section Editor Fort Mountain BBS - Chatsworth, Ga. 30705 (404) 695-8703 As the mountain of evidence and information pertaining to Agent Orange continues to pile up it would seem that our government would be forced to cave in and award benefits to veterans that have been exposed, and they have..... to a certain degree. The health problems that qualify for receiving benefits due to "service in Vietnam" do not even come close to recognizing all of the ills that can be attributed to Agent Orange exposure. We are now in a period of time where we are seeing the efforts to obtain benefits taking on a frenzied pace and many accusative fingers are being pointed. The public at large is becoming more interested in the Agent Orange issue as the drama unfolds. Government officials are now beginning to realize that it could indeed be a fatal mistake to continue to deny the Agent Orange link to health problems suffered by our Vietnam veterans, and to continue to deny just compensation and health care may very well be political suicide. Congress held hearings in late April to address the issues that have been brought up this session. According to DAV Magazine (June, 1990), the 101st Congress will be dealing with bills pertaining to Agent Orange. The following is quoted from the June, 1990 issue of DAV: "One piece of legislation being considered would provide presumptions of service connection for NHL, soft tissue sarcoma, melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and chloracne. The bill, sponsored by Congressman Lane Evans (D-Ill.), would also allow the VA Secretary to add diseases to service- connection status based on the findings of an independent, scientific contract organization." The VA Deputy Secretary Anthony J. Principi has asked that the bill be held until October when the VA completes it's rule making process concerning disability claims related to Agent Orange exposure. This gives us plenty of time to write letters to our Congressmen letting them know just how we feel about the issue. Coupled with the fact that this is an election year, we can stand to gain quite a bit now by a letter writing campaign that is relentless. The clause which would allow the VA Secretary to add diseases to service- connection status is very important. Also of much importance is just which scientific contract organization will be awarded the job of compiling and analyzing all of the information. I don't think that very many of us would be pleased to find such an organization as the CDC in that NAM VET Newsletter Page 5 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 position. On another front I feel compelled to congratulate the American Legion's National Commander, Miles S. Epling for continuing to tell it like it is! Using terms such as "voodoo research" and "wholesale scientific fraud", he is certainly untiring in his efforts to expose the CDC and the government's attempts to cover up the truth. In Mile's June 1990 Commander's Message to the American Legion Membership, he stated "CDC studied a grand total of 166 Vietnam veterans with cancers, and they didn't even develop an exposure index to determine how much the veterans had actually been exposed to Agent Orange. CDC had no way of knowing the extent or duration of exposure. Instead, CDC used the very technique it had roundly condemned when used by others: "self reporting." That means they took the Veterans word for it." If you have been following my articles and letters, you have noticed that I have stated how disgusted I am in the way the government and the CDC has handled this whole thing. Now we find that it has taken over $63,000,000 of our taxpayer's money for the CDC to examine and "interview" a mere 166 Vietnam veterans. Apparently, I am not the only one that is disgusted since Miles Epling went on further to state: "Then this reputable institution declared that it was unable to conduct the Agent Orange study it had proposed. Couldn't find enough veterans. Couldn't prove exposure. Couldn't do this; couldn't do that." "That's pretty interesting, especially so since the Army and the National Academy of Sciences developed a comprehensive record of Agent Orange sprayings in Vietnam, and they can document which units were exposed. Moreover, CDC had these records in it's possession. Even though CDC couldn't find a study group of qualified veterans with the $63 million it had to do the job, The American Legion and Columbia University were able to do so with much less than $100,000." "Our results underwent scientific peer review and were published in the prestigious scientific journal "Environmental Research". Our study used nearly 7,000 Vietnam veterans, half of whom served in Vietnam, some in areas identified and verified by DoD records as having been sprayed with Agent Orange. The other half, the control group, were veterans who had not served in Vietnam." Miles Epling is correct in asserting that this is "pretty interesting". I think that it is more than "pretty interesting" in regards to the CDC spending $63 million dollars to study 166 Vietnam veterans. As a taxpayer I would like to know just how they spent all of that money! I would like to see how they justify their expenditures for the results that they have obtained. Miles goes further with his message by stating "Look at the record on Agent Orange. Congress mandates a study. VA fumbles the ball. CDC picks it up. CDC piddles away at least $63 million and no one even questions where the money went. CDC ignores Congress' mandate to do an Agent Orange study, and finally conducts a study not related to Agent Orange. The findings, dubious at best, are released and the Washington bandwagon quickly fills with people ready to NAM VET Newsletter Page 6 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 applaud and lay this chapter behind us. Meanwhile, the Air Force conducted it's Ranch Hand Study, altered the results, falsely reported the findings, and hardly anyone murmured a complaint. Dr. James Clary, who blew the whistle on that one, asserted what we already know: herbicides made with dioxin can kill you. He admitted that the chemical companies cut corners making the military version of Agent Orange, greatly increasing it's potency. "However," he said, "because the material was to be used on the enemy, none of us were overly concerned. We never considered a scenario in which our own personnel would become contaminated." This brings to mind some of my own research findings pertaining to Agent Orange. Agent Orange usage was in the planning stages for several years before it was actually sprayed. In a memo to President Kennedy, Secretary of State Rusk stated that it was of utmost importance that the US Government not be associated with the chemical companies in order to avoid being accused of "chemical warfare" in Vietnam. He went further to state that they must place emphasis on "it's only weed killers." Why would he make these statements unless he knew at the time that Agent Orange and some of the other chemicals used were indeed harmful to the health of humans? It also bothers me that Agent Orange seems to be taking center stage while all of the other chemicals used (and there are many) are being overlooked. We know that Agent Orange is extremely toxic, but if a new study is instituted then the focus will be on Agent Orange. Many ailments that could possibly be related to some of the other chemicals may not be linked to Agent Orange exposure. Of course this would mean that many veterans that were exposed to dangerous chemicals may never receive the treatment or compensation that they should have. We should demand that ALL chemicals used in Vietnam be considered in any future studies! It would be too easy to overlook them at this point considering all of the fervor surrounding "Agent Orange" at this point. If you are concerned about the outcome of these issues you can do a lot to help by just sitting down and writing letters to your Congress people.... Form letters do not do much good because members of Congress realize that form letters are usually the efforts of a handful of people and many people will sign them just to be going along with the crowd. Original letters though carry clout. It is accepted that for every original letter received, there are a thousand more people out there that hold the same beliefs. It is easy to see that a thousand original letters will mean much more than several million "form letters". I urge you again to sit down at the keyboard and peck out letters to your representatives in Congress, sign them and mail them. Show copies of them to your friends and encourage them to do the same! In closing for this month, I would like to quote Miles Epling one more time..... "Every time this charade replays itself, the leaders of veterans' organizations are counseled to give "measured NAM VET Newsletter Page 7 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 responses": let's reason together and work out our differences. Enough is enough! Apparently some in Washington don't realize that real, live people are dying all across the country from rare disorders that shouldn't be occurring. They aren't statistics; they are flesh and blood human beings who did their duty when their country called. I've said it before: Vietnam veterans are being studied to death in the name of science and politics. We don't need another atomic-veteran chapter in our nation's history. This insanity must cease." Write those letters now friends. Your help "IS" important, and a few letters will certainly not take up that much of your time. They could mean the difference though for the many veterans, wives, and children that so desperately need the proper health care. | | |____====________ ||__________}____)==================|) =============---------------------===_____ /| | | | |\\ \________|__________|_________|_________|/ \\(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)// NAM VET Newsletter Page 8 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 _ ______ _______ __ _ _______ /\\ H M H H\\ H HHHHHHH / \\ H H H \\ H H /====\\ H HHH HHH H \\ H H / \\ H_____H H______ H \\H H ______ ______ _ __ _ ______ _______ H H H /) /\\ H\\ H H M H H H H____// / \\ H \\ H H H H H H \\ /====\\ H \\ H H HHH HHH H_____H H \\ / \\ H \\H H_____M H______ . _ . _ . . -.- . - . - . -. - . - - - - . - - - - .- - . . . - - -. - . . . . . . . -. -. . . . His wings were torn , from his struggle there. His feathers worn , from his pain and despair. He lookedtoward Heaven as if to pray. God , I want to be free today ! Free , to fly in your heavens above. Free to feel my country & love. He struggled there and no one came to release his leg from his captor's chain. He was abandoned after the war. He doesn't even look for help anymore. I even saw people in that horrible scene. Unwilling to answer the eagle's scream. It's been fifteen years and his agony grows. Many Vietnam veterans fight another enemy - post-war trauma (EDITOR'S NOTE: Today is the 15th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government. The last American troops left Vietnam in 1973, but some 450,000 veterans still suffer from the legacy of that war.) By BRENDA PITTMAN AND RUDY ELDER CANANDAIGUA - Marine Sgt. Danny Shelp left the bloody rice paddies of Southeast Asia in June 1967. It was not a time of hailing the conquering hero. So the 22-year-old Shelp tried to come to grips with Vietnam. But his war wasn't over. he fought a personal battle with the ghosts of Vietnam for the next 20 years. The casualties included his marriage and career. It was a time of anger, depression, restlessness and violence. Shelp was among Vietnam's walking wounded, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a psychological condition brought on by his exposure to the horrors of war. Now 44, Shelp is finding inner peace these days, thanks to the counseling and other help he received at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Canandaigua. But the road to recovery was filled with detours. Little did Shelp know in 1967 that years would pass before the bloody battle scenes, the visions of young men dying, would stop invading his thoughts. His most painful memory was the brutal death of a 12-year-old South Vietnamese boy named Kham. "There was this little guy I used to take care of when I was over there," Shelp explained softly, " I wanted to adopt him and bring him back home with me to the states." The skinny, black-haired boy and a friend names Sam followed the men of Alpha Company as they made their way from one operation to another in I Corps, the northern portion of South Vietnam. "We'd always tell Kham where we were going, and he and NAM VET Newsletter Page 51 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 Sam might show up three days after we got to our objective," Shelp recalled, smiling. " They'd give us all kinds of intelligence goodies. They used to walk around in the villages and find out things like where the Viet Cong were and what trails were mined. We used to feed the boys and clothe them." When Kham and Sam didn't return one day after visiting relatives, Shelp began to worry. His worst fears were realized. Shelp's squad found Kham and Sam hanging from a tree. They'd been beaten to death. "The North Vietnamese regulars, not just the Viet Cong guerrillas, had got caught with their pants down a few times and they knew somebody had to be leaking information to us," Shelp said. "They learned the boys were tipping us off to what areas to stay out of and go around. "They killed them right in front of the whole village and everything," he said, his voice growing softer. "I found the guy who turned them in. It was Kham's uncle. I couldn't understand how anyone could do that to their own nephew - his own brother's kid." A squad leader for the infantry unit, Shelp killed the uncle. From that day on, he grew increasingly bitter about the war. Shelp, now a building management service worker at the VA hospital, recently discussed his war experiences with a Finger Lakes Times reporter. A muscular man with tattooed arms, he talked with ease and great seriousness about his post-war years. Vietnam was the last thing on Shelp's mind when he enlisted in the Marines after graduating at the age of 18 from West High School in Rochester. "I knew I wasn't ready for college so I signed up. But I didn't thing I'd end up in Vietnam. A lot of my friends who had dropped out of school got sent to exotic places like the Philippines or the Caribbean, I figured I would too," he chuckled. The Marines had other plans. After learning he was headed for Vietnam, however, Shelp adjusted to the idea and was ready to accept the challenge of combat. I felt good about it," Shelp said. A year as a fire team leader changed his view of the war. After returning home and serving a brief stint training recruits stateside, he was sent back to Vietnam for a second tour of duty. "The second time around I was more concerned about me and surviving, "Shelp said. Combat-weary and emotionally drained, Shelp boarded a plane in Danang in June 1967 for a return to "the real world." NAM VET Newsletter Page 52 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 Shelp was grateful to be alive and relieved to be leaving the war behind. But he was far from joyful. He remembers feeling both confused and sad during the long trip home. "I was glad to be coming back to my mom and dad in Rochester, but mostly, I just wanted to be alone," Shelp recalled. He attempted to put the war behind him by visiting the Thousand Islands. "I slept on my boat, I didn't want to see anybody I knew," He said. I just wanted to be alone and put my emotions about the war in perspective." The solitude of four peaceful months in the Thousand Islands didn't still the rage that burned within Shelp. He tried college, entering the University of Rochester on the GI bill. But he couldn't cope with the anti-war demonstrations on campus. He dropped out after one and a half semesters. "Fraternity row had all these anti-war signs and other weird kinds of things.. The government was paying for my schooling so I kind of stuck out like a sore thumb - not only because I was older than most students but because I didn't socialize with people on campus. For years, unsettling memories of death and destruction were Shelp's constant companion. He developed a temper and was involved in numerous brawls. On the job side, he tried the construction business, doing masonry work. "If things weren't exactly right, I would blow up. I would throw the plans at the people... walk off the job." In 1979, at the age of 34, he found himself consumed with restlessness and depression. He'd lost count of all the jobs he'd held and quit, all the places he'd lived and the emotional upheavals he'd experienced. His marriage of eleven years was nearly over. Shelp saw a newspaper ad touting the services of a Veteran's Outreach Center in Buffalo. But when he got there, he found the agency wasn't offering the kind of help he needed. "They asked me what my problem was," Shelp said. " I told them it was Vietnam. But they weren't interested in that. They said they could assist me if I needed help getting benefits or getting a bad conduct discharge turned around. I said, 'So I don't count anymore, okay, ciao.'" His problems continued. After 13 years of marriage and two children, he and his wife split up. "She always tried to understand me, but it just wasn't NAM VET Newsletter Page 53 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 meant to be. Vietnam was a good percentage of the reason the marriage soured." In 1983, while working at a clothing manufacturer in Rochester, Shelp began to experience "uncomfortable feelings" when the firm started hiring Vietnamese workers. "Just watching then eat their lunch, shoveling rice into their mouth really bothered me," he said. "By that point I had developed such a hatred for them because of the war. I quit before I did something foolish." A short time later, Shelp got into a fight in a tavern in Avon. He was standing at one end of the bar, holding onto a bag of groceries, when a patron came up and knocked the bag out of Shelp's hands. "I didn't know the guy and I don't know what his motivations were except that he had a few drinks in him," Shelp recalled. "ut he tried to hit me and I hit him back. Big time. I busted him up good enough to sent him to Highland Hospital." Shelp was arrested on assault charges, but they were dismissed. But Shelp knew he had gone too far and needed help. He went to the VA Medical Center. During weeks of counseling, he learned that he was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - an affliction affecting some 450,000 Vietnam veterans. Brought on by the trauma of war, the disorder carries numerous symptoms, including instability in work and difficulties relating to others. After experiencing some relief, Shelp discontinued the counseling, But he was far from cured. Shelp was haunted by guilt over the killing he had done in Vietnam and over the death of some of his men. As their squad leader, he had felt responsible for their safety. "In the military, they gear you up in training to become a killer, but they never teach you how to deal with it when you do it," he said. "They don't teach you how to deal with losing good friends. "And inevitably in a war there are always some civilians caught in the middle someplace - some innocent people who get killed by mistake. I guess that's the guilt that comes back on anybody that was exposed to it." Shelp re-entered counseling at the VA in 1985 and finally was able to get to the root of his pain - the memory of the little South Vietnamese boy Kham. It was not until he came to grips with the boy's death in extensive counseling with Dr. Roger Lyman that Shelp began to feel better. "Kham is always in my thoughts, but I am more at peace with them now," he said. "Talking with Roger and other friends about it has helped me. I've learned to accept what happened and NAM VET Newsletter Page 54 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 I feel better." Shelp said he knows lots of other Vietnam veterans who are still struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. "I tell them they have it, and they need counseling, but it often falls on deaf ears," he said. "And for those guys you just have to be there when they hit bottom. But my advice to others who are running through that gauntlet of memories, they should come here before they make a stupid mistake." Shelp said he enjoys working at the hospital and has a good relationship with his two children. He said his aim is simply to enjoy life. And what of his memories of Vietnam? "I don't want to deal with it anymore," he said. "It's gone. It's history." | | |____====________ ||__________}____)==================|) =============---------------------===_____ /| | | | |\\ \________|__________|_________|_________|/ \\(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)___(O)// NAM VET Newsletter Page 55 Volume 4, Number 6 June 17, 1990 Input by: Terry Hayes Waterloo, NY Vets Ambushed THE WASHINGTON TIMES, PAGE A6 THURSDAY, MAY 31,1990 The National Steering Committee for American War Veterans sent a delegation to the Laotian Embassy earlier this week to deliver a note.
