> Fel o+l-ysgrif i neges Nigel Love am "negators" negatives, wnaiff > rhywun ddweud gair bach am "mo" fel "negator"* (chlywais i mo...), os > gwelwch yn dda? Ffurf y Gogledd? Diolch yn fawr. "mo" comes from "dim o" Ni welais i [ddi]m o'r eliffant. As I understand it, this construction is restricted to DEFINITE objects of negative CONJUGATED verbs. So: ni welais i (ddim) eliffant (not *ni welais i mo eliffant -- indef). nid wyf i (ddim) yn gweld yr eliffant (not *nid wyf i'n gweld mo'r eliffant - - periphrastic). Am I right about that? I understand the restriction to conjugated verbs, but I don't see a reason for the restriction to definites. (If you can say 'I didn't see anything of the elephant' -- meaning I didn't see it -- why not 'anything of elephant' too?) Anyone know the history of this? ************************ Nigel Love Linguistics Cape Town NLOVE@BEATTIE.UCT.AC.ZA ************************
