i am a new member to this listserve and am interested in the gaelic language. write back as i am very anxious to discuss this topic Stephen E. Poff spoff@yorkcol.edu You may or may not be in the right place. Gaelic and Welsh are "cousin" languages, i.e. descended from the same root but not mutually intelligible. Her is a simple family tree of the Celtic languages: |-- Welsh + Brythonic --+-- Cornish | |-- Breton Celtic --+ | |-- Irish Gaelic + Goidelic --+-- Scots Gaelic |-- Manx Gaelic There is also a mailing list GAELIC-L (don't know the address; it may be the same Listserver as this one), meant for discussing the Gaelic languages, and a newsgroup soc.culture.celtic, in which the existence of Welsh is barely acknowledged. You may be more at home in one of those forums. Roger
