it is indeed a hill in Shropshire, specifically at Ordnane Survey coordinates SO 306788, just a bit south of Clun. Pen y Wern itself is a small settlement at the head of a small stream which is a tributary of the River Redlake. The GEIRIADUR PRIFYSGOL CYMRU gives two broad meanings for "gwern", namely 1. alder trees, and 2. an alder marsh, a swamp, or a quagmire. It would therefore seem likely that this Pen y Wern is just above a boggy area or alder grove. Close by is "Pen y WErn Hill" atop which is an earthen circle, which is mentioned in S.
